I will travel alone to Japan for one week this summer, will English be enough or I'll need to put some goofy ass translator on my phone to be understood?

about 10% of people speak english here, airports and major trainstations have english speaking staff. Talk to the combini poos if you want to speak english
In short, if youre not a moron you'll be fine. Most if not all transportation methods have English signage and audio announcements. Traveling around will be no problem. Not all but a lot of restaurants have pictures of the plate so you can point and say "kore, kudasai", some will even have English menus that will be given to you if you don't look japanese.
You should get a translator for sure. Example the first time I went to Japan I saw a old wooden sign by a creek, took a pic, and translated it. It said "Don't fish the fish, keep the river clean, please." And you can do the same with menus in places that don't have pics or English.
Unless you are australian (which you might be since you ask retarded questions), why would you spend only 1 week in Japan when it takes 15+ hours of flight from most western countries?
The first day is always jetlag day and the last day is takeoff day, so that's only 5 good days.
>having to fly more than 10 hours to japan
Top kek, move to a first world country
Why?
They now have to fly around Russia, something second and third worlders don't have to do.
New York to Tokyo is15 hours
London to Tokyo is 15 hours
What do you consider "first world", friendo? Fucking Brisbane or some shit?
>US
>UK
>not third world
Come on son
learn what the fucking word means you mouthbreather.
Politically USA and UK are 1st world
Culturally and societally they are 3rd or even 4th world
ok retard
delusional
China #1
Usa #2
Euro is third world now
I mean brisbane is the greatest city in the world
Flying from Aus to Japan rules, it's a relatively short flight and time different is so small you dont get any jetlag.
Assuming you are going to Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka, basic polite Japanese like sumimasen, arigatou etc. combined with body language and simple english will get you plenty far.
Must be either naive or a poorfag. Though, if he's a poorfag he musta also be naive since you'd save up more to afford being there longer
Name a single 1st world country that has sub 10h flights to Japan
>Name a single 1st world country that has sub 10h flights to Japan
Singapore. HK. Taiwan. South Korea. Hawaii if you want to get technical. And Australia by a cunthair/
I'm going for two weeks. Is it enough to see all of tokyo?
2 weeks is pretty good for just tokyo. definitely no less than 2 weeks tho.
You can do Tokyo alone in 1 week.
Day 1 Shinjuku
Day 2 Shibuya
Day 3 Akihabara
Day 4 Odaiba
Day 5 Harajuku
Day 6 Asakusa
Day 7 ..
If OP only does Tokyo in 1 week it's doable.
But he said Japan in general, so if he thought he could do Tokyo + Kyoto or Osaka or whatever, then no.
see
This is what you should. Maybe take something out and add Chiyoda City if history shit interests you. And make sure to get a retro game console for cheap when you're in Akihabara to resell it back in the states
I really dont see how Harajuku needs its own day. what are you doing in Harajuku for 8-24 hours? same can be said for most of these like Odaiba and Akihabara. Aki maybe if you hit up an insane amount of claw machines and hit night life but pretty much every one of these wards has as many arcades its just not located in kawaii anime weeb land.
Odaiba sucks unless you're a huge Gundam fan and even then it's eh. Check out Nakano or Shimokitazawa.
Shimo is for basic boho bitches, filled with thrift stores and coffee shops.
I avoid like the plague.
What the fuck is he going to do in Harajuku for one day? That place can be skipped entirely.
Ah yes, the famously still up-and-running Odaiba complete with Venus Fort and Gundam...
My plan is the same as anon above but going to japan in the fall. My plan is
Day 1: Shinjuku, specifically Kabukicho
Day 2 Shibuya for the nice shrines and Harajuku
Day 3: Akihabara and Chiyoda City to see more shrines and castles
Day 4 Asakusa
Day 5 Odaiba
You'll be fine. You won't have any meaningful conversations with locals but you'll be able to do simple shit.
I've been to Japan 3 times and didn't speak a word of Japanese the entire time. You will be fine solo or just get on Tinder for a translator and/or cooming.
Learning the alphabet in a weekend and the first 100 N5 kanji in a week or two and you'll be able to get around very easily.
Will I be fine in eating at those get in ans get out soba/katsudon restaurants you see on youtube during peak hours? Feels like the staff might get annoyed with trying to help me with the menu
i'll answer this since i solo travel frequently for work and staff debacles are my biggest nightmare. scope the place out first either in person or online. If it has a ticket machine out front, no problem. insert money, click food button, take ticket, click change button and take change. Then you just hand your ticket to the staff, 0 words needed. Picture menus are a bit more dicey, as you might get follow up questions about how you want your noodles, etc. I was there in November and some places in major cities even have tablet ordering now w language support. Just take 5min to do some groundwork before meals and you'll be okay.
I'm in a similar situation to OP and I'll be stopping by Japan for 4 days. I'm not sure if it's worth trying to take the train to Kyoto or some other nearby towns or if I'd be better off just staying in Tokyo the whole time.
A thread died for this.
10+ threads on sighsee die every day for the same retard weeb jap thread
Why won't jannies do their goddamn jobs?
