I'm currently planning to visit Thailand in mid-September and staying for a month, though after that I've got 2 months to burn in SEA before visiting my family around Christmas time. What I'm currently considering is either doing just under 2 months in the Philippines (maybe Cebu?), or going to Cambodia or Nepal and then going back to Thailand for another month. What would you guys go for? Are the Philippines that much nicer than places closer to Thailand for the hassle to be worth it?

Dont go to Phnom Penh, only Siem Reap is worth it.
Don't know much about Nepal but isn't real shit for a few months each year, crazy smog and that.

Phnom Penh is fine. Go drink beer on the riverside. Also go see s21 and the killing fields.
Its only worth 2 or maybe 3 nights though.
Also, Siem Reap itself has nothing, you only go there as a base for Angkor Wat - which obviously is a must see.

If its your first time in SEA, then Thailand first is a good idea. 1 month split between bangkok and pattaya can cover the range of nightlife and metropolitan experiences, and there are plenty of cool temples within range of both places.

Cambodia is right next door, and siam reap is a common destination from thailand. Check out angkor wat and some other temples, but there isn't much to do there so don't spend more than a few days or a week. As the other poster said Phnom Penh isn't worth it. It's in a very, very bad shape post covid and now it doesn't even have weed tourism to prop it up. It's got nothing going on for it except extreme poverty and desperation.

Vietnam should be on your list imo. It's a lovely place and extremely cheap. HCMC and Da Nang really stood out for me. You can easily spend a couple weeks spread between those places.

Philippines is dysfunctional but its got a different vibe than other SEA countries. It's also primarily english speaking, so its very easy to communicate with almost everywhere, which is a HUGE game changer in almost every way. IMO its a love it or hate it type of place. I love it, personally, despite the pollution in metro manila. It's great having that exotic foreign appeal, but still speaking english with people. Top tier destination in the world for online dating as a white guy 25-35 if volume is what you are after. Cebu is a great place if you don't like Manila.

Nepal is just a gross little shithole with nothing going on unless you like treking with guides. It doesn't fit into your 'SEA adventure' itinerary at all.

      Amazing post, thank you.

Go to vietnam. skip laos, cambodia, malaysia, indonesia, unless you're into culture and shit. Nepal is pure shit, go only if you're a mountaineering freak and have gear. Philippines can be nice, especially for diving/beaches, it depends on where you go, but it's definitely not better than thailand

      You too

Guys, not OP but to recap Thailand, Vietnam and Philippines are best in SEA.

What is all the hype about Bali and Kuala Lumpur. Are they any good?

        >>What is all the hype about Bali
As an Australia, hearing foreigners talk about Bali "hype" is hysterical. Here we just associated with poor bogans who just go there for the beach and cheap booze.

I was actually disappointed when I met an Aussie who didn't go on benders in Bali.

Ah, so the Ballerics/Costa del Sol for Aussies.

          The more you know!

That's exactly right. Most people I know who enjoy SEA don't want to go to Bali because of the association. Phuket has a similar, but not as severe, reputation.

Bali is literally one of a kind culturally though. It is the only part of Southeast Asia and Indonesia that still maintains the regions old Hindu religious and cultural roots but Islam took over the area. It would be stupid not to go if you get the chance.

I do seem to recall reading that the north of the ialand is relatively chill and not chock full of drunken bro shit.

Or am I remembering that wrong?

Don't get me wrong, I plan on going myself some time, I'll just be avoiding the areas catering to people who only go to get drunk in the sun - probably stay in Ubud - the one associated with basic b***h white women who want to be in Eat, Pray, Love

A month isn't every long in Thailand if it turns out you love the country and want to see a lot of it.

Just saying keep your options open.

Anyone have cosmetic surgery (mole or cyst removal) done in SEA? Can you trust general surgeons there?

After visiting Thailand I wouldn't trust those fricks with anything complex. Would still go back though, tis a fun place.
