Indonesia kills its touristic industry

Indonesia is killing its tourism industry by implementing this summer a wide range of new taxes and price hikes across the board.
For example tourists were charged $15 per day on the Komodo Islands. From August 1st it will be $250. Borobudur temple gets a $100 increase to get inside the temple.

Do you think this is a good thing as locals take back control of their touristic areas, or will it send whole regions into poverty once tourists no longer come?

Another example of one of these dumb, shitty, third world Southeast Asian countries "rebranding" themselves for "luxury tourists". Let it rot. Indonesia is Muslim anyways and therefore largely worthless and boring outside of Bali.

they think they can get the big bux travellers. its delusion, they see all these western backpackers and think "hmm why don't we lure in their rich parents?" like its just that easy.

they fail to realize that fricking nobody would be going to SEA if it were not cheaper than so many other destinations. you would have to be colossally moronic to spend New Zealand or Japan-level money and then foresake those places and go to fricking Indonesia.

either way I'm keen to let Thailand and Indonesia indulge this shit for a few years just to teach them a lesson. I don't think its that great of a loss for world travel either.

in the case of komodo, they are also limiting the number of tourists to 200,000 per year
they will find plenty of people willing to pay. i have never been there but it is on my list and paying a bit extra doesn't bother me. a couple of hundred dollars on top of a trip that probably costs thousands. big deal
it seems they have done it partly because tourists there act like utter twats sometimes. a couple of months ago there was a tourist boat that set off a load of fireworks that scared off all the animals. people leave litter everywhere, pester the natives and so on.
it's also a unesco world heritage site so they will get funding from unesco if the tourist numbers fall short

The type of tourists who really wanna see the Komodo Islands are probably the types who are willing to pay $250/day.

Might be good for the environment of Komodo Island too if there's fewer tourists paying more money (although locals probably won't like it if the government takes all the money while they get fewer tourists to make money off).

What do you mean? It also makes it very difficult to bring children since you'll have to basically fork out $1000 per day for a family of four.
It will also as you said bankrupt most hotels in the area because there's nothing there to do besides going to the islands

Except the $250 you pay in Bhutan covers for a guide, food, accomodation and transport.
