No, it's filthy and covered with street "art".

All the good greek art is either in Paris or in London anyways.

Absolutely, just be aware you're going to a shithole.

It's a shithole I liked the port Piraeus but the financial district looks like it belongs in Africa.

Been to 100+ cities around the world, Athens in summer is my favourite.

Be aware of where you’re going, and that it isn’t some highly sanitised, dressed up corporate city like most European capitals.

Get the Athens multi pass so you can see all the 5 major exhibitions.

As others have said, majority of the city is genuinely a shithole with a few marble and limestone spectacles littered about.

Food is pretty good if you like kebab meat and or seafood. Walking around the paths are a deathtrap because of how shittily maintained the place is.

Most people go to Piraeus and go to the big islands, but we found it was 100x better going to the smaller less visited islands like Agistri. You can eBike around the entire island in less than 90mins and travel to some pretty based beaches with nobody about

Pic - cost less than $14

Ill also say, Athens is hands down the nosiest fricking city I have ever been to in Europe.
Trucks driving up narrow side streets, blaring horns, and every fricker on mopeds and motor bikes.

We stayed on an 8th floor AirBnB with sound proofing and it felt like there was a Moped in our room every night. Had to buy ear plugs. The noise often died down about 5am and started up again at 6am

Pic - A beach in South Agistri. The waters are spectacularly blue

Don’t be a moron like me and prebook multiple weeks there. It’s not like Italy where all of the historical monuments and buildings are well preserved. You can see most of the shit worth seeing in two days. Outside of the historical stuff the city kind of sucks. Probably the worst place I’ve spent an extended amount of time. Just kind of a depressing place, Greece is clearly not doing well at all economically and the food sucks. Greeks are also not particularly friendly compared to other Europeans.

        It’s

Been to 100+ cities around the world, Athens in summer is my favourite.

        replying here here.

        For me, the complete opposite.

Athens was the first place I ever solo travelled to. I’d never been somewhere as clumsily busy, as noisy and polluted, yet so romantic, soulful and beautiful.

I had my days exploring odd, rough and interesting neighbourhoods. Where one end of the street would have commie squatters partying throughout the week and the other side, groups of riot police ready to go with submachine guns in hand and full combat gear at all hours of the day and night. All whilst old people would sit by on another side playing checkers and enjoy the Greek sun watching it all pass by.

I’d go out to a few clubs and bars, all of which were electric, absolutely rammed full of people. I walked back to my hotel on the other side of the city with no phone one night, exploring old winding streets and passages in the warm Greek summer night breeze, passing by groups of rabid looking homeless schizos, old bookshops still open, a group of dancing women and a man getting violently beaten by Greek police dressed head to toe in black combat gear. My hotel was at the top of a hill, I looked back and saw the Acropolis lit up, shining in the night so beautifully against the backdrop of the city. Out of all of the worlds monuments I’ve seen, the Acropolis at night is easily one of the most beautiful.

The next day I took a bus to the beach, and felt like I was transported to a completely different place altogether. Pristine white sand, clear water, it was incredible.

Honestly, I rate Athens 10/10, if you want somewhere more modern, metropolitan or sanitised there are a million other places.

Athens is pure soul, dirty stinking, hot and humid soul

The views atop Mt Lycabettus are pretty impressive. We lucked out as the sun came out right after a torrential rainstorm

Athens is one of my favourite cities I've ever been to. Disgusting, dirty, grimy but absolutely great. It's a vibe you'll love or hate. Had so much fun walking around the streets, seeing all the ancient sites and petting all the cats. Very comfy.

Why is there so many fricking stray cats in Athens?
The tourist attractions are overrun by them

This is interesting but I don't know if I can cope with that exploring it alone.
