If you have a friend somewhere you could stay with, any destination is worth it. Always make use of couch surfing if you can. It cuts such a big part of your budget. Also means you have a local guide for free.
Don't know much bout Hong Kong, but the mix of chinese and british culture probably makes it way easier to communicate with locals in comparison to other chinese cities.
Airplane tickets are also the cheapest in the region. (at least for europeans as far as i can see).

This is my plan for any place that I travel too, I'm too autistic to travel alone and it's always good to make new friends, plus it would cut down on costs and help me find shit to do.

If you're White; Hong Kong is absolutely worth visiting. The local girls loved me. If you can't get local girls just go for the Flip maids on "Sunday funday" in the parks. Easy to spot them.

Anyway, very fun time I had in Hong Kong and I'll certainly be going back.
I went there after a long trip in Thailand -- I think that ruined it. That said, lots of see but only need 3 days to check off all the items. Lots of good food, bars and stuff to see but if you are coming from a cheap part of Asia you will be annoyed.
