    India is fine.

I'm from the U.S. but live in India. Before I moved here, I'd visited multiple times per year for over a decade. My feelings for this country could be characterized as akin to a love-hate relationship. Outside of its cities, India is an extraordinarily beautiful country. People tend to be friendly, the cost-of-living is low, and there's a lot to see and do.

Sexual violence and street-side harassment, or "eve-teasing," are genuine concerns. However, eve-teasing is also a somewhat localized phenomenon, insofar as the problem is far worse in a handful of northern states and cities than it is elsewhere. Still, if your girlfriend is White, you can expect some level of discomfort.

I don't really have any expat friends, and I don't regularly come across other foreigners in my city. From the handful of White chicks I've talked to in recent years, harassment seems to be pretty hit and miss--some girls have gotten groped or nearly raped, while most others didn't have complaints beyond mundane selfie harassment at tourist sites and monuments (f.e., I just took an American friend to the Taj Mahal--we were taking pictures a few feet from a European-looking woman, who went apeshit after the 20th guy in 10 minutes asked for a picture).

(for what it's worth--the one White girl I know who was "almost raped' had gotten piss-drunk with a group of random men she'd met a shitty nightclub and then invited them to her hotel room for an "afterparty." No Indian women would ever do that unless she was actually looking to get trained)

Personally, I--as a man--have rarely felt unsafe while traveling in India. Just took picrel today in rural Jharkhand. Stopped and talked to a bunch of tribal people along the trails and paths. They were all pretty jolly. Either didn't give a shit that I was there, or were extraordinarily friendly and happy to chat. IMO, the best parts of India are outside the big cities.

nice, I've been to India once, briefly in late 2016, right when Modi demonetized the Rupee so I had to cut the trip short haha. I have a couple of questions, if you have time

      >where in India do you live? (if you even have one place)
      >have you lived in other regions? what are your favorites and least favorites?
      >what's your favorite regional cuisine?
      >what do your monthly living expenses typically come to? do you have an income stream?
      >what is the dating scene like for a white guy?
      >what are some overrated and underrated aspects about India?

        >where in India do you live? (if you even have one place)
I've lived in a Tier-1 city for the past two years. Also lived in Delhi several years before that. Won't be more specific, sorry.
        >have you lived in other regions? what are your favorites and least favorites?
Aside from my current city, just Delhi. Have visited about 20-22 states. East-Central India is my favorite region: Odisha, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh. Great nature, underrated tribal cultures, and very, very few tourists.

        >what's your favorite regional cuisine?
I'm really bad at picking favorites, sorry.
        >what do your monthly living expenses typically come to? do you have an income stream?
I'm legally a resident of India and will get my OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) next year. However, I work for U.S.-based companies and make a good amount of money by American standards. I'm very comfortable here.

I pay a cumulative total of about $350 for static expenses: rent, electricity, garage parking, and my maid. Everything else is variable. Sometimes I spend a few hundred per month on take-away and delivery, other times I cook most of my meals at home.
        >what is the dating scene like for a white guy?
I'm married, so I'm not really the right person to ask. From prior experience, being "exotic" gives you a very superficial advantage. You're a novelty, and most people--men and women alike--will be willing to give you the benefit of doubt when they wouldn't give it to other Indians. Making friends and social connections is pretty easy.

All things considered, if you can get laid in your home country, you can probably get laid in India. If you can't get laid in your home country, then you probably can't get laid here.

But if you live here long-term or can speak any local language relatively well, your marketability goes up considerably, because a lot of girls aren't going to date a guy who can't relate to their culture and/or is on a brief holiday.

White "people" are no stranger to hypocrisy and larping. Eating greasy fast food with the same hands they use toilet paper with and not bathing for days on end and compensating it with deodorant

Why is it impossible for Indians in the west to assimilate properly? Like, could you ever picture an Indian that likes Melt Banana?

Indians in generals seems to be calmer and more civilized than muslims.

Muslims ape out and get triggered at the slightest problem that happens. They start civil wars and conflicts over different variations of the same religion. They're still stuck in the medieval era.

The bad rep the country gets, in my opinion, is purely because of the northern shithole states like UP, Bihar, Jharkhand and of course Delhi. If you avoid the north you should be fine. If you really want to see the Taj Mahal and all that, make a group for your own safety. Now that I realise how fricked up things are, I want to get my firearm licence before travelling alone on road. People in the South, East and North-East are especially friendly I live in West Bengal, so you can ask me about it. It is infested badly by muslims so i would recommend you don't visit places other than Kolkata and the hills in the north.

Honest question: Taj Mahal. Yes or no? IF I do it it would be like swoop in swoop out, I'd be going in the next couple weeks so probably lowish season. I wouldn't even go in or buy tickets probably just want to see it but Ive heard so many awful stories about scams and shit that I'm wondering if I should just avoid it all together.

      Samegay who lives in India.

Just took my American friend there about 10 days ago. It was an absolute shitshow in terms of crowd management and queues. However, we also went during the holidays—I’ve been there twice before, and it was never quite that bad.

The scams and all are overblown. Just learn how to ignore people. If you walk or take a taxi to the Taj Mahal, you’ll be immediately besieged by unlicensed tour guides and other touts. Say “no thanks” and walk off. Some of them might follow you, but there’s no need to engage—they’ll eventually get bored and walk off. Speaking Hindi makes them frick right off, but if you can’t do that, they won’t bother you beyond blabbering some nonsense about “crowd so bad, I get you ticket fast.”

Also, you can’t see shit unless you actually go in and buy tickets. Conceivably, you could go to the viewpoint across the Yamuna, but I think that’s also a protected archaeological site that requires a ticket for admission.

Just suck it up and push through the line.

Picrel was the fricking queue to get OUT of the Taj Mahal. Take my advice and avoid going on Indian public holidays and/or weekends.

Also, there’s literally no reason at all to spend the night in Agra unless you want to take a day-trip to Fatehpur Sikri the next morning. If you take an early “double-decker” train from Delhi, you can get into Agra reasonably early and then take a train back the same evening (or, alternatively, take a train to your next destination, wherever that may be).

You can also take an Uber InterCity from Delhi to Agra for between Rs. 2,800 and Rs. 3,500 ($25-40 for a one-way, 3-4 hour drive). That’s what I did with my friend, since we had to fly out of Delhi the next day. We just paid the driver a few hundred extra to wait in parking and then drive us back for the same rate. You can do the same thing, but most drivers won’t speak much English, so this might be easier to do if you’re with a Hindi-speaking friend.

Then again, most people will get the point if you just screech, “go back Delhi, same price?”

No one who is legit will come up to you to sell you tickets, or get you a faster way up. There will be a place to buy tickets from, should be ₹800 or something for foreign passports. Keep yourself together, not showing off too much skin keeps those uncivilised northern mutts away. Winter is peak season so there will be a frick ton of people, off season is summer, which, i don't think anyone on this board can survive.

        Also this.

A good rule of thumb: don’t fricking waste your time on anyone who approaches you unsolicited to offer “help” or a service.” The same goes for random people who want to check your train tickets and whatnot, try telling you the booking counter is closed, blah blah fricking blah. It’s low-key funny, because these so-called ticket checkers don’t even look at Indians, lol.

You don’t really have to deal with a LOT of hassle outside of Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, and a handful of other cities and sites that are popular with foreign tourists. Even if you just look confident—or, again, can speak some Hindi—these people will largely steer clear of you.

Funny how it even applies outside here. When i visited italy there were so many paki and bangladeshi tramps that con white people, and they claim they're Indians but are scared of actual Indians (doesn't help either that they can't tell the difference). My white friend who is familiar with the culture asked one of them where in india he was from, he got pissed and walked away

Loving the posts by the anon who lives in India, I've not been to India in over a decade but I spent 6 months travelling around it and found it a fascinating country, amazing food, people, history - its amazing to think what experiences people had who went there in the 80s and 90s before the internet and mainstream travel guides, must have been amazing.
I hope to go back one day and try to relive my Goan experience
