Where? I've always been treated well in northern Europe as an American. However, it's been the exact opposite in central and southern countries when they realize it.

You would be treated better in Southern Europe if you stopped pretending that you are Italian just because your name is Joe Caruso

Naw, I was always greeted well but the second they realize that I am an American their demeanor would completely pivot

Hahah, southern Italians would treat me like shit because they thought I was American. They'd change completely when it became clear I wasn't.
I thought it might have been because of an army base nearby.

I can't imagine how butthurt and emasculated someone would feel with a foreign country occupying your land with military bases LMAO

    I’ve lived in Italy
I never dressed Italian, just my normal slovenly western style
Outside of tourist areas people still ask you questions in Italian because they’ll assume you’re from there.

People whose job it is to hustle money from tourists (legit or illegitimate) can spot you a mile away anyway.

Why can't you people dress normally? That's the most regarded outfit I've ever seen. All you need is a plain tshirt and shorts. Carrying around a huge pack pack is also a surefire way to get robbed.

I wont dress like pic related, definitely hoodies and baseball caps and bummy poorgay clothes though. Im in early 20s and decently good looking so hopefully that helps

Honestly the problem is his diabetic legs with no walking experience muscle tone and fat chest that makes it look a lot worse,
if he was thin enough for the shirt to fit properly and had human legs it would easiely move him up into cool fun loving travel dude territory

I never understood this “rootless” thing. My family has been in the United States since the early colonies. I’m talking late 1600’s. That’s 400 years of history, how is that rootless? We’re an individualist, pioneering culture. Or we were, at least.

I always dress as native as possible wherever I am, even if no locals actually dress that way. In China I wear hanfu, changshan, zhongshan suit, or at least a tangzhuang. As I type this I'm in Poland, wearing a red and white Adidas tracksuit and a flat cap.

I'm an American in Norway currently and every shopkeeper I've seen initially talks to me in Norwegian before I ask to switch to English, I guess in some places it's easier to blend in.

Fashion makes no sense to me so I just try to dress as plainly and inoffensive as possible. I NEVER wear shorts, no matter how hot it is. My whole wardrobe is just jeans and fitted T-shirts in dark colors.

People WILL stare you down and make fun of you. Typically it's the middle age potbellies with their local sportsball team shirt and/or hat. If in summer, they'll be wearing super white New Balance shoes with daddy socks. Don't forget the fanny pack. For college aged, they wear college hoodies and have starbucks coffee at all times rather than a local shop. People straight up asked me if US tourists embarrass me...I said yes beyond words. They act like children.

    t. lived all over Europe for work.

You can usually tell an American from a European just by their face. Americans and Europeans just look different.

      >Is it worth it to avoid dressing like an American tourist when I go to Europe?
Unless you are wearing the most stereotypical shit possible most Europeans will have a hard time telling you from anyone else.

Seriously, all I did was go to walmart pick out some cheap clothing, mostly grey's/earth tones, and without american designs or obvious american sports teams; most people wouldn't guess I wasn't a local. Dunno how many people in Scandinavia had to ask if I was Finnish or swedish or Norweigain. Wasn't till I wore some brighter style/summer clothing or didn't wear shorts when it was over 15C that people assumed = american.

Depends, if you just look unsuprised by the surroundings you'll get associated as some european nationality. If you stand around gawking at everything with a camera or wearing a fake smile sure, but doubt any anons here would do that.

Just look unimpressed and don't take a photo of everything most people won't guess you're a foreigner if you're white.
