Is it worth working for an airline to get free flights?

I'm in the USA and I know that pilots get free flights but I'm not interested (or probably smart) enough to become a pilot. Flight attendants get free flights but I'm straight and don't like kissing customer's asses. I know that other airline employees get some flight benefits but I don't know how generous they are.
What intrigues me about flight attendant jobs is that there is a very minimal monthly working requirement. I think I read that it's 20 hours. So long as you work that, you get the benefit and continue gaining seniority. Idk if they can shitcan you if you work less than that. But anyway, if I only had to work 20 hours a month (five 4 hour flights) to get unlimited free flights worldwide then I might be willing to work alongside bawds and gays while kissing the customer's ass.

Anyway, what do you know about the flight benefits? Is it worth looking into?

imo no simply because you become a wagie and develop no real skills whatsoever to make good money later on in life.

ive heard of some secret super club that matches you with people in the airline industry and you pay a fee to get on their "friend/family list" so you can take advantage of the flights. I was quoted 10k by a charlatan and told them to frick off, but essentially you get first class for free anywhere you just pay the taxes

If you want to get into aviation the lack of staff would make right now the best time to do it.

      Irrelevant to the questions.

its kind of hard to frick up. air lines are desperate at the moment. just lie about any existing injuries.

as long as you have the right to work in that country and no history of terrorism or working with illicit drugs you should be fine.

I don't think you get "free flights" working for an airline. You get them kinda free or cheap, with a lot of strings attached (such as being stuck with shitty standby tickets). But it does make budget travel a lot more feasible if you work for an airline that has a lot of routes.

And I don't think you have to be a flight attendant. I know someone who is an IT monkey that gets these benefits because he works for an airline.

Man, SighSee really is lame as of late.

Worked for United in Chicago, for IT, remote - free flights whenever, upon being hired I demanded "WFH" and once I was assigned a badge and had Chicago as my home base, I was literally on standby the same week to Tokyo. They didn't care where I worked. I also have an APEC card, so I was able to use my United badge and my APEC card to circumvent any visa restrictions - I was also dating a flight attendant, but she was on ANA, so that was fun to match up - sometimes I had to pay out of pocket for a connection e.g. in SFO but had to get to LAX where I had a :guaranteed: seat so I'd waltz over to an Delta/American/Alaska help desk in the airport and usually was able to purchase a heavily discounted one.

So yes, there are free flights, I have friends that work for Philippine Airlines, Qutar, Emirates, JAL and ANA - and they get free flights. I still get free flights/standby and status on United because of my time there. Philippine Airlines, are a bit stingey in that there is no unlimited standby, but the whole family gets one free flight a year, anyone can be in your "family."

      It's true, they're fun though.

Just be a baggage rat. They get the same perks as desk agents and don't deal with customers. I met a guy who has worked for United forever when I was in Hawaii and they'll straight up send you to places where there isn't enough staff for a month or so and put you in a hotel, per diem, and give you transport. He was working in Kauai and he was some old fat death metal guy based in Chicago

      Don't be a future skyking.

My friend had an office job at KLM and got free flights anywhere in the world KLM and their partners fly, through a benefit called ZED Travels.

So far he has been in over 120 countries, only paying airport taxes for his tickets.

I worked at Qantas for years. My answer is no. They aren't taking on full time employees anymore, they just take on outsourced job agency hires so they don't have to pay penalty rates , holidays, etc
Even maintenance jobs are offshored to some shit hole third world country these days

I worked the ramp for Air New Zealand on a work holiday visa. Great job, got really fit doing baggage room and then go to buzz around with the tugs. Got some real skills out of it too that paid off down the road.

Flight benefits are nice, but you should have other reasons. It’s a fun workplace, oddly loose.

You have to work for big 3 for it to be worth it. Wholly owned subsidiaries that do commuter flights like American Eagle are your other option if you live near a smaller airport. Don't work for a contractor or you'll get shit benefits.

The flight benefits are good. You can fly anywhere for free as long as there's space on the plane. The company gives you load reservation information so you can look at a flight the day before and generally know if you will get on or not. Flying to Europe or Asia becomes as casual as taking the bus plus you will get upgraded to first class completely for free if there's space.

Working full time sucks and the pay is Amazon tier at the start but you get a pay raise every year till you make around $80k as a front line worker. If you grindmaxx you can make over $100k as a flight attendant, ground crew, or gate agent. You get over a month of paid time off and coworkers are pretty good about covering your shift if you pay them back so your unpaid time off is pretty much unlimited. Seasonal workers are a thing also where you work a few busy months and are off the rest of the year and you retain all your free flight benefits you just won't have health insurance.

      Anonymous

I basically want the flight benefits only. I don't care about the pay or other benefits. I actually want to work as little as possible or not at all while retaining the flight benefits. It appears that seasonal is where I should go? If I am not seasonal, what's the minimum I have to work every month to keep the flight benefits?

      >You have to work for big 3 for it to be worth it. Wholly owned subsidiaries that do commuter flights like American Eagle are your other option if you live near a smaller airport.
I thought there is reciprocity between all the airlines for flight benefits.

        Anonymous

Seasonal sounds like a good option then. My airline they have to work a minimum of 300-400 hours a year and can work no more than 800. Some people hit that in a few months of working and don't come back till next year. Other people I know at other airlines will live in Europe and come back to work in the states for a few days every quarters. Not really sure how that works I think it depends what schedule your airport has.

You want to work for the big 3 because if you work for something like Jetblue or SWA you won't have full international flight benefits on your own company plane. You'll be able to fly on almost every other airline from every country but your stand by priority will be below company employees and retirees. You will have to pay between $50 to $200 for a stand by ticket and won't be upgraded to first class depending on the airline sharing agreement. The big 3 airlines have better airline agreements between their international alliance members so flying on a foreign airline will either be free or low costs between $10-$50.

Great info, thanks. What's the minimum someone (non-seasonal) has to work to keep flight benefits?

            Anonymous

Full time or part time have no minimum hours for flight benefits. Thinking about it I think part time American Airlines is the best. The guys I know that work for AA can give away all their shifts pretty easy and never have to be at work. I think they have to pay $50 if they get upgraded to first class though.

              Anonymous

Wait, you're saying that airline employees can:
              >get hired
              >give away all of their shifts
              >work zero hours forever
              >and still get flight benefits?

                Anonymous

This probably varies from airline to airline, but at my last airline job you had to work a minimum of 15 hours per week or else you’d get a talking to. Anything above that you could give away

This is where I've flown recently. I have to imagine that working at an airport isn't a desirable job and they're simply filling positions as fast as possible to compensate for everyone being laid off or quitting during the height of the pandemic. (I'll let you infer which airports were the worst to fly out of.)

They need to get their diversity numbers up and since coloreds can't be pilots or flight attendants they don't hire whites to move luggage around

I worked for a regional carrier in Canada and it was alright. One of the big downers is that its standby so you dont always know where you will end up going so its hard to long term plan if its not a busy route. also most co workers only go for an overnight because if shit happens on the flight home sunday evening they can still try to catch a flight the next morning without getting a ding on their attendance or they would have to buy a ticket with another carrier. We got some partnerships with other airlines which allow us to fly cheap with them to overseas destinations but the routes are limited and its standby so if you have a 2 week vacation you might only want to go for 1 week so you have a few days of padding incase you have issues going or coming back. these longer trips are better todo off season when last minute hotels are cheaper and easier to find unless you can stay with someone at your destination.
What sucks is if you take an extended leave from work you cant use your benefits to the max which sucks. If I could get like 2 months of leave from work and be able to use my benefits that would rock. Might be able to live on the road if you have a remote job with the airline I guess.

Do you guys think being an airline pilot would be a great career? I worry that it would ruin travel for me. I was accepted into an airline training program with low interest rates on the loans. I feel like it would get kind of meaningless and boring after a while.
