You cant go Turkey>Syria. I am pretty sure you cant do Iran-Afghanistan either. You would have to go Iran to Pakistan but the border regions are risky.

I met a couple of germans in myanmar who were basically doing this route. Can't remember which way they did around afghanistan. I remember they'd been through 14 countries and had takrn 14 months, hitchhiking the whole way.

How old were they? Sounds pretty based and adventurous, even if they were probably dirty bums.

Like 28-29? They were mildly based. The girl was planning on travelling back by hitchhicking, but further north through siberia. I don't think they were that poor from the jobs they had. Funnily enough I met another couple of cute german girls who had cycled from germany to tashkent when I met them. I met a dutch guy doing a similair thing. Must just be something to do with the autism genes that make people them want to travel from one end of eurasia to the other overland like bums.

Afghanistan and Pakistan are a no-no.
India is unadvisable if you have normal hygiene sensibilities (although I concede that may not be the case with hippies).
Sri Lanka is undergoing total societal collapse for the next couple years at least, so you should avoid it.
You are better off flying over Iraq too.

Entering Pakistan through Afghanistan isn't the greatest of ideas.

Honestly, the hippie trail was fun because of hippies. Meeting fellow travelers, sharing stories around some weed, getting laid with sloppy hippie blondies is what made it fun. Now every step of this trip will get you Sobhraj'd with no one to help your ass. The new hippie trail is SEA.

If you're going on a tour of the worst places in Eurasia, that's close enough.

If you're going on some hippie trail, this is amazing, if you're gay or uncovered female or openly take drugs, there's no better place then the middle east and south central asia.

Is it true that burma is closed, I’ve not looked into it but I run in buddhist circles and know whites that have been, but that have have been in the 90s or something. I’ve been told its fine just that they still use ox and carts to get around.

      What's wrong with Dhaka?

It's a complete shithole with zero appeal to anyone. There is nothing 'hippie' about an Islamic city where 90% of the population live below the poverty line.
Maybe I am missing something. To me a 'hippie trail' you would expect to meet lots of weed smokers, sunshine, flowers, liberal communities...
On what planet are Myanmar and Bangladesh hippie destinations?

back in the day the route was exactly this, but the traditional target was katmandu because drugs where legal there.

Weed is easy to get in Dhaka. Yes it is a shithole but not a bad one.

In the case of Peru, you've pretty much avoided the Coca fields and routes. But you may find some ilegal logging camps where you shouldn't ask what's doing that stuff in the river.
And I'm not really sure you want to reach that civilization devoided Peru - Colombia border (you should ask someone from Colombia about Leticia)
On the other hand, you'll get god tier coffee and chocolate
      On the other hand
Now, you can get the best

Leticia is pretty nice actually! A pain to get to but it’s certainly a nice little town, by far the most pleasant I’ve been in Amazonia. The area around is mostly fine, you’ll want a guide but should have really zero concerns.

It’s crucial to know you cannot drive there. It’s boat or plane, and the boat is no easy task. The nearest ports to the west with road connections are Pucallpa (9 ish days downriver) and Yurimaguas (7 days) or the weeklong trip from Manaus, but keep in mind Manaus isn’t really connected to the Brazilian road network either.

Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria are unadvisable.
Iran is complicated if you're a yank, but doable.
    Pakistan is iffy but doable.
The rest is fine. You could just mix it up a bit though, perhaps go through go through Turkey to Iran, then cross the gulf to UAE/Oman and boat/fly to Pakistan/India.

It's insane that this path would've been much safer in the 1960s and 1970s. For example, Assad and the Baathist junta holding the peace in Syria and Iraq. Reminds you that history isn't always a forward progression.

I was also pretty shocked by the stories my grandmother told of travelling through Iran and Afghanistan with friends, but I suppose it was much safer at the time when Iran was still an American-propped regime and Afghanistan still had its king.

It was like that because a power struggle was going on between the Soviet Union and the US. Each side backed strongmen that were either pro-soviet or pro-american in the third world and very authoritarian and absolutely no bullshit was tolerated so these countries were safe and clean. We live in a freer but more chaotic world now.

its a little more complicated than them not having right wing death squads, also has to do with religious revivalism and the decline of socialism as a whole. also afghanistan being at war for 40 years and half these countries having boatloads of sanctions, coups and conflicts
