Is there ANY reason at all to visit Moldova?
Have any of you been there?
I'm curious because it's the least visited country in Europe.

Before Putin's war you could also visit Transnistria which is a world of its own. Now, maybe it's not such a good idea.

If shit hits the fan you'll be on your own as no western embassy formally takes care of foreigners in Transnistria.

So why don't just visit your embassy in Chișinău which is right next door?

            Anonymous

Because there's an actual border between the PMR and Moldova proper?
If you for some reason get arrested in Transnistria you have no diplomatic representation and you will depend on informal channels between Chisinau and Tiraspol.
On the other hand, if you are on the run from bail or child support then Transnistria used to be a an okay place to lay low for a while.

              Anonymous

If you are arrested then you aren't going anywhere so having a border crossing (which is less formal compared to usual crossings) doesn't make a difference

Your embassy usually won't help you if you get arrested

We are talking very hypothetical threats, certainly not a reason not to visit the country

                >Your embassy usually won't help you if you get arrested
You haven't heard of consular assistance, have you?
Obviously they can't bail you out, but they'll help you by arranging lawyers and interpreters if needed.
Also a call to the local embassy in many cases quickly changes the mind of corrupt officials, sometimes even before the call actually connects.

I normally wouldn't advise to not go to Transnistria, but in the current situation I'd keep away.

Nevertheless I think Moldova is worth a visit, especially if you go out to visit the minority regions and leave enough space in your luggage to bring back wine.

Moldovans don't like their territory being occupied by Russians larping as Soviet Moldova and many Moldovans would like to get rid of the PMR to finally be able to join the EU and get even more gibs than now.

Guys, I hate to break it to you, if "shit hits the fan" anywhere, you are on your own. I dont know why people believe their embassies can do anything but make passports for them, because they can't.

I am speaking from experience as an Australian citizen by the way. Maybe you think thats different if you're a citizen of a superpower, like the US. If you think thats the case, ask yourself what aid the US embassy rendered to US citizens when they were getting fucked hard by the extreme lockdowns in China. Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

The shit about embassies rendering extraordinary aid to citizens in bad situations overseas is purely hollywood make believe. Thats where people got it from. From movies.

Yes, Australian diplomats are known to be more occupied diddling kids in SEA than actually helping their fellow Australians abroad.
You should not apply the Aussie standard to diplomats of other countries.

            That's why.

The US organized flights out of Wuhan in 2020. Australia was like "your fault for leaving the island, guess you're fucked."

That people were left behind in Afghan is a huge failure of the Biden administration.

Can you count on them for everything? No. Will they come rescue you from some warlord's basement? No. But at the very least they organize flights out of failing states. They expect you to pay for it though.

Tiraspol is just like another Russian provincial city, seen one, seen all.
Bender is nice but also fairly average post-USSR fare, the castle is okay.
People rarely leave the Bender-Tiraspol-Pervoimaisk corridor, outside that it looks just like Moldova with Russian/Cyrillic instead of Romanian/Latin.
People (myself included) only go there because it's a de-facto country.
Moldova proper is also cheaper and only slightly less polished.

I've been to Moldova and talked to Moldovans, Romanians, Pridnestrovians and Gagausians plus I've read some books about the area.

As for why the airlines expanded, I guess it was more potential customers in both directions and maybe some EU gibs.

And there are also many Moldovans who are happy with the current situation

Moldova is as neutral as Switzerland, they'll do what the EU tells them to do and if the Russians/Transnistrians would encroach on Moldovan territory they'll be happy to do so.

I'm not scaremongering, just stating my opinion that I would postpone my visit to Transnistria until the situation in the Ukraine calmed down a little.
As for Moldova proper I don't see any problems right now, except that budget accommodations might be occupied by more Ukrainians than usual.

I bet they're happy. Moldova is on a fast track to join the EU now. That would have been impossible a year ago. They'll soon be sending money home from Germany and France.

They already do, Moldovan citizens enjoy visa-free travel in the Schengen area.
If they speak Romanian then they can easily get Romanian citizenship that allows even more freedom of movement in Europe.

No way because it's poor, most of Europe is poor. Roads probably don't have much to do with it either.

It's probably just because there's no reason to look past Romania to visit there.

Not only roads but also no long-distance trains or (for a long time) budget flights to Western Europe.
Doesn't have any beaches either which eliminates another segment of tourists that would be attracted to low prices.
They do have the better wines than the Romanians though.
