Is traveling really worth the hassle and cost?

Has anybody else become disillusioned with travel? Everyone shows off the glamorous side of traveling on social media when that's just a small part of the experience. Most of it is negative. There's the constant waiting, security checkpoints, boarding and deboarding packed planes, cramped seating with minimal legroom, surly flight attendants, long customs and immigration lines, currency exchange, language barriers, awkward situations and faux pas, hawkers persistently pestering you, corrupt police shaking you down, robbers targeting you as a tourist, food poisoning, motion sickness, uncomfortable weather that you aren't used to, crowds just about everywhere with 8 billion people on the planet. It's all so tiresome. Usually I need a vacation from my vacation when it's all over.

All for what? I can order all sorts of ethnic food in my city. I can date women from different cultural backgrounds here. I can use the internet or VR device to see the Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty and old dusty churches. I can visit museums virtually. I can learn about a country's history online. I can drive to beaches and nature. No need to travel across the globe for any of this. I wish I had realized this earlier in life before I wasted so much money on pointless travel. I would rather use the money towards a lakeside retreat home away from the city.

I have a degree in tourism.
It’s how we do travel that is all wrong.
People who say the world has never been more accessible are full of shit: access, to locations, products, services, transportation, etc is more restricted today than it has been at any other point in history.
This severely limits the kinds of experiences you can get from traveling, most people are railroaded into wasting their vacation on overpriced tourist traps.
The only way to get around is by being rich which gives you access to so many more things.
We desperately need a new philosophy, a new way of traveling.
New strategies, new ideas, we have to think outside the box and come up with an alternative that is more satisfying than the current status quo.

      So what do you suggest?

My solution is to embrace virtual travel. It's less stressful. Less costly for you and the environment. Of course you won't be able to brag about how many countries you visited, briefly and superficially in most cases

I think the best solution would be to know someone in your country of destination, a friend that could help you avoid the tourist traps and guide you.

Travel should be banned. Humans are killing the planet. All humans should be welded into apartments, given a VR headset and a diet of wienerroach goyslop.

k, so basically you have nothing worthwhile to contribute to my thread. Noted.

      >Travel should be banned
      >All humans should be welded into apartments
      >and a diet of wienerroach goyslop
I never made any of those arguments

Diet of wienerroach goyslop? I can get delicious, homemade ethnic food of many varieties in my city. You have yet to make a convincing argument why I need to fly thousands of miles to Vietnam for this experience.

It's actually pretty well written and very much to the point. If you don't like it, don't do it and don't b***h about it. You want a pseudointellectual argument for what boils down to my simple answer. If traveling is too much for you to handle, then don't travel. If you don't mind the ups and downs, then go if you want to. I will engage your post on just one point though:
        >I can date women
Clearly fricking not, because this level of autism and moronation are so severe the only women you could insert your penis into are buried in a graveyard. Consider joining them soon.

Get TSA Pre and Global Entry if you're American. Get expedited security for other places. Get a job or start a business that lets you accumulate points. Fly business class for free and redeem for upper tier hotels.

      >i've decided to spend my money on more enjoyable and worthwhile things
which is why you're posting about how much you're above travel on a travel board? You seem to not be spending money and not doing the worthwhile things you like by posting here instead of doing them. Weird.

So what makes your way of traveling so special and worthwhile?

It depends on what your interests are. If you're not into sightseeing or exploring other cultures and cities/towns then there's really no reason to travel.
I personally travel for food and wine because even if there are good foreign restaurants in my city they will never truly be like those in their native country because the food is grown differently and the experience is usually quite different for good or bad. There's also plenty of wineries or distilleries I like to visit to try things I can't get back home and learn more about them for my own curiosities. They're also usually in places with better weather then what I usually get so it acts as a nice escape.

But yeah if you don't give a shit about the hassles of going cross-continent don't bother traveling if there's not a big enough reason to leave your country.

I don't necessarily agree about the difference in quality warranting traveling long distances just to eat and drink. At least you are capable of expressing your opinion like an adult.

You just sound inexperienced and/or unable to use the tools at your disposal.

Half of your complaints can be mitigated with a travel card and utilization of an airline points system. TSA Pre and Global Entry are free with a Capital One or Delta card which negates the security checkpoints and long lines. You also get cheap and/or free upgrades to much more comfortable flight accommodations with better service. A proper travel card also negates the currency exchange issue

The rest of your complaints are straight up picking bad places to go at the wrong time.

Even in the best case scenario there's a lot of waiting and sitting for hours on end. For that reason I don't see myself doing as much long-distance traveling in the future. I will make an exception for Japan and will use your suggestions to see if that results in an improved experience. Thanks fren.

        >Even in the best case scenario there's a lot of waiting and sitting for hours on end.

A comfy seat or Preferred Status lounge makes a world of difference. Relaxing with a wienertail away from the rest of the unwashed troglodytes is a completely different travel experience imho. I fully understand what you're saying and that way of travel is for people who do it maybe once or twice a year to go see family or take their poor gay budget vacation with their 32 kids.

so what I and many other avid travelers do is get a good travel card and funnel all your monthly expenses through it (paying off the balance every month ofc). you rack up points like crazy this way. also, pick one airline and stick to it, don't just click the lowest fare you find off Kayak or Expedia because you'll end up on some shit ass airline like Frontier or Spirit and those motherfrickers ding for every little thing so in the end you're saving maybe $100 and getting dogshit service and accommodation. I like Delta myself, Comfort + seating is the best bang for your buck in terms of comfiness and price. Another tip is to never check any bags, unless you are going to be gone for more than two weeks you can get away with a carry-on and small backpack if you pack right. No checked bags and TSA Pre/Global Entry means you can realistically show up maybe an hour before boarding and still have enough time for a beer in the lounge instead of the 3 fricking hours that everyone else ends up doing.

I don't see myself being a frequent flyer so that's not really relevant to my situation. I just have one flight planned, from Chicago to Tokyo, and will use All Nippon. For domestic trips I would rather drive.

I actually travel to places with a one way ticket. That is, I do not go back to live where I was. So I travel because I had to in order to have more freedom and enough money not to be poor.
People that travel to UK to see the Buckingham palace or some shit, is disgusting to me. Where I go I stay, I actually learn the language properly unlike amerilards who rely on other expats saving their asses on the spot.

Depends on what you do and why

Yeah basically. People that do action packed mega trips in short periods of time set themselves up for disappointment tbh. Vacation packages try and cram into a week stuff that could take you a month without as much as hassle. I understand Americans don't get a lot of vacation time so that makes sense but it's still doing it wrong. Waking up in the morning and having a coffee, enjoying the sun rise in a new country. Speaking to people that are not like you (and trying to coom in them if they got tiddies). Seeing historical sites to better understand perspectives. Having silly experiences to laugh about etc.

    It's probably because you're a burger and don't get a proper holiday.
    >beg for a few days off from your boss
    >go to airport because trains are for communists
    >groped by TSA unless you tip them still forced to throw away anything needed for your travels
    >wait in line flight kicks you off because they over booked and now forced to buy new tickets doubling the cost
    >finally get on plane but can't take off because too many fat people
    >kick someone off the plane they see as brown or black
    >finally take off but no beer because that's not 'family values' or some shit
    >land and plane erupts in clapping to the point ears are damaged so have to go to hospital and pay 100,000 for pain medicine
    >get to hotel paying over 500£ a night for some room you couldn't possibly use all of and is bigger than most apartments too
    >spend your 2 days holiday before boss demands you work
    >have to work since medical bills
    >return home with all the horrors of your holiday and debt
    >get call form hotel charge you 1000£ extra because you forgot to tip the underpaid maid
    >'a-at least I've f-f-freee!'
Yeah never going to the US for holiday you couldn't pay me to visit some hell hole like I've seen of New York or Los Angeles. Florida might be okay still the beaches look nice but not till your government fixes itself.

What are your passions? Is exercising said passions abroad a thrilling idea? A few examples:

A coyote hunter in the midwest USA will dream of snagging a water buffalo in Africa.
A cycylist who has repeatedly conquered every bike path, range, trail in a 250mile radius of home will dream of cycling across France.
Someone who rents kayaks down at their local waterfront will dream of an aquatic voyage abroad.

But if you approach leaving your home county as just staying in a hotel, eating at a new restaurant, then returning to your job and home a week later, yea, that sounds godawful lame bro
