Isle of Skye

I'm off to Skye in a month, it's an 11 hour drive from where I live in Norf England.

Anyone been before? Any tips?

Anon you can get to Skye in 11h from Dover are you walking there

Skye is lovely, it’s a collection of great wee spots all close together. How long are you there for? Where are you staying?

Even getting to Skye is great. The ferry up from Mallaig often has dolphins and the drive from Armadale along the Sleat peninsula is better than the bridge. Best is that shitty wee ferry at glenelg. You land at Kylerhea forest, is full of trails and you can see otters. The hill climb from there up to the main road, with the sudden view of the cuillins at the summit, is the best drive in the British isles.

If you like hillwalking you will love the cuillins which are tough munros. About as difficult as you can get without needing ropes. If you don’t like going up mountains an excellent walk is going to the abandoned crafting settlement at boreaig.

Talisker Bay is nice and is a short hike from the parking at a farmhouse. The talisker distillery is in a village called Carbost which is a little touch of globohomosexual even out there. There’s a coffee shack outside which is good.

Quirang area (all of it) is phenomenal and has views back to the mainland on clear days. Rassay is less visited, you should go there.

Other things worth seeing are Neist Point (watch out for whales in the water) and the coral beach. There are Stone Age things everywhere. If you like kayaking / paddle boarding you can have nice paddles in crystal clear sheltered waters with seals watching you. Elgol has great views of the cuillins as well.

Practicalities: shops can have odd hours so buy supplies and fill up your petrol tank when you can. Ferries book out early. The western isles are a whole other trip, come back for those. Popular spots get fricking jammed with normies (eg fairy pools, which are a bit shit tbh, but drive on to glenbrittle anyway). Portree is a bit dull but has a couple of ok cafes.

What this anon said. I also went to An Corran beach with fossilized dino footprints which was nice to see. Be sure to go on low tide though.

Quirraing is the place to be for a good hike, but can be crowded with tourists in high season. Same thing for old man of storr.

Best to camp near the Storr so you can be the first one there in the morning. The view east from the Storr at sunrise is the most magnificent I've seen anywhere, ever.

Yes that view is stunning. You can use an app to make sure the sun rises exactly where you want it too. Get up very early to avoid being swamped by people taking selfies

would the 1st week of May be horrible for tourists? I'll be staying around Elgol for a couple days then.

No idea tbh, as I went in October-November. There will be more hikers in May probably and i've heard stories of annoying Scottish midges that are active from April-September, so be sure to have some insect repellant with you.

It’ll be nice - springtime, relatively few tourists who come around summer normally. Midges can be out, bring insect repellant. The slightest wind keeps them away. Elgol is a bit out of the way, it’ll take some time on Skye’s twisty roads to get anywhere.

          How's the cooming there?

I don’t need to pay for it so wouldn’t know anon

Skye is a big island with a small, mostly old, quite rural population. Opportunities with locals are scarce. However it gets very busy in peak tourist season shortening your odds drastically.
