Japan is just better?

Im watching this "day in the life of..." japan series and japan just looks superior. I live in New York city. it is nothing like this. nothing. no comfy udon stores. the service workers dont give a damn about you, they are unfriendly brown people with strange accents. there is no sense of unity or tradition.

give it to me straight. is japan just better? is life just BETTER in a calm, non diverse place? people seem to enjoy themselves more or is this grass is greener thinking?

I like SighSee as it's very good and helping me keep my expectations in check. However so far the only negatives I've heard about Japan are
    >Toxic work culture
    >You'll get touched in the train ride home
    >it's hot

    >new york city

Not just Tokyo, but Seoul, Taipei, Bangkok, Singapore, Saigon, Istanbul, fricking Belgrade, all are superior to New York City and by a shockingly large margin. New York City was admirable maybe 10-15 years ago as being somewhat cool, comfy and unique but now it fricking sucks ass and is also insanely overpriced for a lot less amenities and even less infrastructure compared to the above mentioned cities, not to mention the crime and the fact that the city is completely taken over now by department stores and chain brands. NYC is only impressive to 15-20 year old Midwestern Americans who left their boring suburb for the first time and think theyre "going to find themselves" in NYC somehow by shopping at a Disney store in Times Square. NYC isnt even a real city by global standards- it doesnt even come close to cracking 10 million people, compared to most of the world's major cities its just a podunk, culturaless meme town. Its a joke, and itd be a hysterical one too if it wasnt such a ripoff.

    no
    >is life just BETTER in a calm, non diverse place?
No, it's just different and the difference is hard to grasp unless you experienced them both for some time.
    >people seem to enjoy themselves more or is this grass is greener thinking?
Right now, there's some Japanese salaryman sitting in his room thinking about how nice it would be to emigrate to the US, the land of the free, where he could be his true self, so yeah, the grass is always greener on the other side.

Also, that Paul guy looks creepy, hope he doesn't look like that in person.

I live in Finland which is honestly hard to beat, but Japan was still VASTLY superior. Except for one thing. The shitty work culture.

Yes its grass is greener on the other side.

There's certainly appealing things about the Japanese model, but it's psychologically distressing to have to take all the weight of "Japan"ness onto yourself. It's the biggest crab bucket culture in the world, they all actually loathe each other and all the formality is just an elaborate truce arrangement so that life can still proceed forward in some manner (and Japan is still infamous for routine shit taking months or years because it needs to be filtered through some byzantine arrangement)

Imagine how annoying it would be to be making minimum wage (and theres is lower after accounting for exchange rates and relative purchasing power btw) and have to do all of that bullshit Japanese shit to appease old people. You have to memorise specific grammatical voices which barely get used in casual conversation because the only people who care are old losers who have pegged their entire identity to how fricking baroque Japan is and their only interactions are with service employees.

There's problems with the hyper individuality associated with the west, but at the end of the day it's the least shit option we have. Anyway, most of the social problems it causes have spread to Japan anyway (every service worker in Tokyo is going to be a Flip or Dravidian in 5 years, they already mostly are) - so you're not really escaping anything but going there, you're just heaping more bullshit onto your plate.

I'm aware my post verges on overly bitter and I probably seem like some sour grapes homosexual, but hopefully it can help to at least balance the discussion, if nothing else.

To be quite honest, the west is heading in a similar situation, but instead of old people it's whatever group manages to win the Oppression Olympics at the time.
In English people make fun of pronouns, but in other European languages they try to restructure the whole grammatical system to appease a minority within a minority within a minority.
Considering how that process has accelerated recently, I'd rather decipher Pajeet or Ngyuen speaking in broken keigo while warming up my tendies.

If you're comparing having to play musical pronouns with having to memorize kenjogo and sonkeigo - I'm sorry but you have no idea what you are getting into and are in way over your head. Unironically go leave and keep daydreaming.

          >If you're comparing having to play musical pronouns with having to memorize kenjogo and sonkeigo

Not him but unironically yes. Memorizing the difference between formal and informal grammar in Japanese is easy if youre not a total brainlet, of all things difficult about the Japanese language, this doesnt even register on the radar. Pronouns however are literal made-up gibberish where the context doesnt even make sense to any normal person with some semblance of real life.

I am unironically comparing "pronouns" with keigo.
You learn keigo once and after some practice you can apply it consistently - sonkeigo for the customer side, kenjougo for the in-group side, teineigo for anything in between - fairly easy, stays the same for each interaction.
If you mess it up it's not too big of a deal to most customers and if the Imperial Family comes for a visit you will be briefed beforehand anyway.

Now compare this with the current situation in my country where a company can get sued for not offering a gender-neutral address for people who desire so: The language needed changes between individuals, so you better be damn careful what the balding 50-year old man in pumps identifies as in the customer database because otherwise you could end up in deep trouble because there are bad faith actors exploiting the system to get money and attention.

Superior to New York? Yeah I'd probably say so considering everyone I know from New York hates New York. Japan isn't the perfect weaboo paradise people like to portray it as. The city is just like other cities around the world except cleaner and much safer. Visiting Shinjuku I was still on my guard at night (like you always should be) but it was very, very safe and comfy. The only thing you had to watch out for were cars driving through those thin alley way walking areas. I'd like to visit there more throughout my life, but I don't think I'd want to live there. They had some of the best service anywhere I went, 10/10 politness and professionalism. It was amazing as a tourist. I wish I knew more Japanese so I could actually have a conversation with them though.
I wouldn't be able to integrate that well as much as I like a lot of the culture and general lifestyles. The work culture and always being a foreigner would get old imo. Not saying I want them to accept me, but it would be very hard to find friends even with my similar interests in stuff. Its hard enough to find friends in the states. I'll just stick to sending them all my filthy gaijin money for Godzilla and anime stuff in the mean time while waiting to go back for a visit.
