How much does language learning improve your experience of traveling, working, and living abroad? Could it be said to be the key to having a good experience?

    > How much does language learning improve your experience of traveling, working, and living abroad?
Working and living abroad, immeasurably. Even if you’re in a working environment that uses your language, you’re guaranteed to get far more out of life when you can talk to locals in their native tongue. Traveling, it’s maybe less essential, but it certainly never makes an experience worse, only better (with a tiny number of exceptions—because speaking a language always makes you harder to rip off or scam, some locals who might have liked to scam you might regard foreigners speaking their language with some suspicion or even hostility. But it’s a vanishingly small number of such cases.)

    >Could it be said to be the key to having a good experience?
It has always enriched my experiences when I’ve been able to speak with locals in their own languages. But I know lots of people who can’t or don’t learn languages who’ve had good experiences as well. And for a minority of travelers or expats, the illusion-dispelling nature of speaking a local language might be a mixed bag. People don’t always like what they hear once they actually understand it all.

Knowing the language is night and fricking day when traveling literally everything becomes easier people treat you like family they go out of their way to help you. Getting laid becomes easier as well.

For me traveling just to see a random japanese mountain or forest where i could just go hiking at home and not speak to any locals is pointless.

Traveling should always be about learnig and human connection which explains why you have so many jaded monolingual chuds here who dont like traveling anymore

Some of the very most disgruntled and unhappy Ryan Boundless types are fluent or at least proficient in the local lingo though. Granted a lot of them are just bitter about getting old bald and fat or whatever

I want to learn [language] so I can pick up girls that aren't explicitly hunting for foreigners.

Is it just me, or is speaking only English the real Chad move? It's not a coincidence that before the 1980s basically no Europeans or North Americans learned Asian or African languages, and everyone accepted this is as normal and just the way things are. Also, boomers still get away with this, but there's a new culture of expecting millennials and zoomers to be "culturally sensitive" or whatever. Successfully defying this push makes you seem less supplicating and cooler.

The best comparison I can make is it's the difference between watching a movie on mute versus with sound and dialog.
Is it possible to enjoy a movie with no sound? Yes, in theory...

No matter where you go the people you want to deal with know English. If they don't know English they are morons

If you're interested in the culture, interacting, etc, then definitely learn the language. It takes way more effort (months if not 1 yr+) than you'd think, but it pays off if you do repeat visits.
If you're an autismo just there to grab a few pics and stuff your face with tourist sloppa then no need, just stay in your hotel room and watch porn.
