Living in Tunisia

Thinking of moving to Tunisia in a couple years once I've saved up around $1M. How's life there? It has a high HDI for an African country so it doesn't seem too bad but other African countries with high HDIs like Egypt and SA are fricked. I know a bit of French but will get serious about learning it if I do decide to move there.

Safe, low cost of living, and access to good healthcare (read there are a lot of western doctors there). Also, I've read that a lot of French people retire there. It seems like a hidden gem so I know there must be a catch.

Well you're in Africa, that's the catch.

Have you considered Tangier? Big expat community and it's only 40 minutes from Spain by boat.

Are you planning to retire or work remotely? What do you picture yourself doing on a daily basis?

I read a lot of bad things about Morocco so I just assumed the whole country was a shithole. But if that's not the case, I'd be happy to live in Morocco. I'm planning to retire completely and just live off of dividends from investing.

I don't think Tunisia is going to be any better.

All the Maghreb is the same; the only difference is how inured locals are to mass tourism.
This is why I suggest having easy access to Spain for when you get sick of the Arabs.

        >Safe, low cost of living, and access to good healthcare
we don't have any of these things we have been slowly lifting subsidy, walking past 8 in the capital is prone to suicide and all doctors have been leaving the country in droves. Also westerns doctors never come here to begin with.
        > I've read that a lot of French people retire there.
it used to be before 2011 but few people come here now
        >there must be a catch.
the catch is your information on tunisia is false.

What about buying a place? I just want a medium sized villa for at most 500 000 TND. Renting is a dealbreaker.

        >What about buying a place?

It's pretty safe, just avoid the capital city, it's a shithole, find yourself a good seaside city around Bizerte / Nabeul and you'll enjoy. Biggest problem is definetly ntrent, quality is shit and it can get expensive. Prepare yourself for spicy food because they put harissa everywhere.
