The thing about London (and places like it) is that all of the traditionally “non-touristy secrets!” Are in fact not secrets at all and are actually known about by everyone and their fricking dog.

London is cool if you’re a normie tourist and want to stay at a plush boutique hotel, see le famous Harry Pottta sights, go to a few museums, drink at glamorous bars and dine at high end restaurants.

Apart from that, there genuinely isn’t much there worth visiting that you can’t find better elsewhere. t. Lived there

There are like 10 great museums in the city and another 10 that are worth it. Also shopping and great dining. But it's like said. Having spent months in London, what I most like is just take the tube and exploring different neighborhoods on foot.

The main attraction is the people really. So many people from so many different places from literally all backgrounds. The architecture is interesting, some museums are world class, you can see some of the tallest buildings in europe.

But you have to be a good consumer every second you spend there or you get kicked out. Go for a coffee near london bridge and you'll be greeted with the most uncomfortable chairs, expensive coffee and no bathroom. The idea is to buy and gtfo asap to increase throughput.

        Anonymous

Uh no the attraction is British people and a capital that was basically near Rome like for 200 years.

        >But you have to be a good consumer every second you spend there
every major art gallery and museum is free to get in to the permanent exhibits. of course you have to exit through the gift shop but that is the case in every major museum everywhere, even when you already paid to get in.

anyone visiting london now should go and see the elgin marbles at the british museum. there was a news story recently that there are "advanced talks" about sending them back to greece. i'm not getting into the politics of that and there are lots of things that could block it (for one thing it would require a change in the law) but it will probably happen sooner or later. in which case the only way to see them will be to go to fricking athens. go and see them now while you can still see them in a civilised environment.

I am the one you are replying to. Although I made that post I would not recommend London. I do not plan to stay here forever I still do think it would be a great place (at least for a while) if money were no object

I can just speak for myself in saying, as someone else who has lived in London, there is very little there that doesn’t feel insanely corporatised, forced and frankly soulless.

You can pop up as many quirky new bars, regurgitated thrift shops and over-priced market stalls as you want, at the end of the day it can’t replace the essence of what makes somewhere a nice place to live with a good quality of living.

Let me give you an example. I lived in Madrid, every day after finishing work, I’d leave my apartment, (lived in a variety of different areas, all of them vibrant, visually beautiful and safe) - not something that you’ll find in London under a comparable income, go out around 10 or 11 at night, grab a coffee outside any number of hundreds of nice bar cafes in the area within short walking distance, relax, smoke and make conversation outside in a nice plaza or old winding street. Wide variety of folks, old young, locals, expats etc, never a bad vibe, nobody trying to prove anything or be someone like I often find in London.

No trashy halal chicken shops, lots of genuine cultural events (live Spanish music etc) mostly actual, local Spanish folks and lots of families about everywhere.

Recently I was dead central London, Friday night. Tried to do the same thing, walked around for fricking ages and couldn’t find a single spot where I could even sit down. Everything closed except for a few pubs which were pretty dull with a handful of toffs.

Found a place finally on Google, looked okay. I get there and there’s a bouncer at the door, asks if I’m a “member” and then tells me to go away when I tell him I’m not.

One more thing about London is that the vibe is just completely off. Full of condescending, passive aggressive c**ts.

What you are touching on here is how atomized London is. People are disparate and there is not a feeling of genuine connection with a larger culture of shared values that isn't some flavour of the month bullshit. I do not feel welcome here. To me it seems the government is actively hostile towards the native people and has been for a long time. That aside I think this place is terrible for your mental health. Sometimes I feel like this place is stealing my life away from me with the grind, and it is excruciating

EXACTLY what I fricking meant. You showed it off far better than I could.

In Madrid, Valencia or Barcelona, I’d regularly see Salsa or Flamenco evenings at bars and venues. Traditional live Spanish music, arts nights etc. The best part about it too was that these are attended by just as many young people as older people.

The events in London are all a load of “black led” “black empowerment” horseshit, some African/Paki rapper at a scummy basement club or concert hall or some beta amateur feminist “comedian” that harps on about sleeping with 45 men that month.

I’m truly convinced, the only people that defend London today are ones who have either deluded themselves into thinking they like it, or just simply haven’t lived anywhere else.

What's wrong with you? London isn't pavement "coffee culture" at 10pm on a winter night. The cozy pubs are what you're supposed to visit.

            Anonymous

Visiting smaller cities in the UK, and even more small towns where there aren’t many options for clubs/bars, pubs are awesome at night and become my go-to. Very social places, lots of young people, good music, plenty of socialising etc.

When I went to a few of these pubs in central, it was mostly older 50+ banker types having a few pints with their colleagues or a few old upper-middle class couples sitting down sharing a wine or whatever. Completely and utterly different vibe. Not to mention they start winding down past 11 and are usually completely closed by 12 at most, even on a Friday night.

Regardless though, that pavement coffee culture is fricking amazing. It really makes you feel part of the city, being able to be out in the open in your surroundings whilst being able to admire the architecture and your surrounding neighbourhood. Meeting people outside too is so much of a nicer experience and is so much more chilled out.

I’ll say as well, walking in a pub by yourself, whilst there’s nothing wrong with it, can be a weird experience. Sitting down at a table outdoors by yourself and getting a coffee and a smoke feels a lot less intimidating and normal, at least to me.

What I wouldn't visit is windowless local pubs in small towns, but that's purely because I'm a foreigner here and not down to fight moronic drunks.

Not an issue when you have a satnav on your phone.
driving in London and in the UK is easy compared to the rest of Europe, even in London drivers are relatively polite and civilised. Also I don't know how it works but the traffic system is planned in a way that reduces the need of roadsigns by huge amount. It is easy and uncomplicated. I have driven in Poland and often there is like a pole by the side of the road with like 10 different signs, good luck taking in all that information when going at speed.

London city is impressive as a NYC LARP, the imperial remnants of architecture around Mayfair and soho are impressive as well. Notting Hill is nice, probably top 5 residential area in all of Europe.

Absolutely not right. Bits of it are very poor, concentrated round the east, but lots of the most desirable parts of London are in the suburbs. Nothing really for a tourist to visit, but again, how is that different from any other place's suburbia?

Nothing. I work for a living in London and it is terrible. The issue is that absolute majority of foreigners who supposedly fled their shithole countries bring that aggresive, criminal and tribal behaviour to London, and the majority of native locals are city/suburban dwelling scum, rude and chavvy, often involved in small theft and drug dealing. It many parts of London it is rare to hear proper English spoken, in other parts all you hear is chavy uwotm8 yobs(and stacies, beckys and alanas) in tracksuits loitering about corners. Forget about stiff upper lip cultured English gentleman (or woman), that is fiction. Tl dr outside of tourists traps London is a shithole. Avoid at all costs.

London is definitely a weird place. It feels sterile and soulless. I've visited a few times and I still have no clue where real life is actually happening in this city. Best times I've had when going out has been far away from the center in the outer districts. They are basically self-sustained little towns where something like a local community still exists and you can feel that in the night life. Nothing extraordinary, but authentic.

Not him but this is one weird thing I found about London. It’s like there’s this forced diversity around which just doesn’t make sense.

I stayed in a super high end apartment in CW, late last year. Very fancy place. IIRC it’s one of the tallest in the UK.

Went to the pool and every single person there was black. Just young black 18-23 year olds.

Took a walk behind my high-rise and felt like I was back on an estate. Loads of Muslims that didn’t speak English, women in Burqas, lot of young black guys hanging around smoking. Didn’t make sense to me.

            Sadiq’s London I suppose

Possibly won't be read but give Hyde Park Winter Wonderland a try. Got enough rides to rival a theme park, it's interesting to walk around and there are lots of little bars with loads of various live acts. You must pre-buy tickets to get in.

For some reason Forbidden Planet is really popular, don't really understand why but when I worked in an airport I saw forbidden planet bags all the time. It's just a slightly larger than normal comic store.

If you want to see a "real" British shopping mall you can check out Westfield Stratford which is pretty big and isn't falling into disrepair with a depressing number of empty units like lots of malls are. It's also next to the Olympic Park if you want to walk around that (or go on the big slide).

        Just no.
Westfield is horrible, it is a mixture of few luxury brands with garbage like primark, it is fully packed with people at all times, most of those people are poor or black, also there are teen chavs there all the time causing trouble, the atmoshere is always tense there. For real shopping experience one has to go to Harrods, unironically, it is not even owned by british but the location and prices attract rich tourists and wealthy or at least upper class brits, even poor people who just go there to look at stuff behave and don't ape out like in westfield. The atmosphere is also comfy, go to food court and most people speak proper english and are white (or asian), while in westfield there are constant queues of blacks and chavs at every mcdonalds and kfc.

In summer I recommend going to Kew Gardens, I know it doesn't sound like much, but its a very nice way to spend a day especially if going with family/gf.
most people who go there are actually civilised, there are few non whites and most of then are tourists, it takes a while to walk around the perimeter on a footpath but there is also a nice restaurant with lovely outdoor area by the main pond and it feels very traditional and British

London is THE greatest city in Europe, but it somehow manages to be fairly grim and shit for most of its inhabitans. Because, even if you earn 4000 GBP net there, you'll never feel comfortable financially.

    No idea how that works.

      >London is THE greatest city in Europe

Lost me right there. The biggest? Yeah.

The most interesting, pretty, fun, captivating, enjoyable, happy, so on and so fourth? Absolutely not.

I visited Moscow, Paris and London extensively. Out of the European megacities, London is the wealthiest and most realized filling one. You can walk in Inner London for hours upon hours and see nothing but luxury and expensive shops & bars. No other city in Europe has that.

        >The most interesting, pretty, fun, captivating, enjoyable, happy, so on
That not. Albeit I'd argue it can be if you have Asian millionaire kid-tier money.

I am a Romanian dev in a specific niche and a company brought me over to London because I had good experience and skill in that certain niche that locals could not fill. In my opinion, if you are a loser you do not deserve to live in the city and should move to your suburban / village shithole. Only high income high skilled people should be able to live in cities.

As a first worlder, you had way more opportunities and chance than me to win, yet you did not. That means you are a massive failure and do not deserve to live in the city, simple as.

Typical eastern european scum attitude. This is why no one wants you here.

I’m laughing my ass off reading this.

Firstly, you are not some uber special le niche tech worker that was so unique “they couldn’t find a local to do it”. London is one of the biggest cities in the world, with one of the biggest tech industries in the world, with probably the highest number of skilled professionals in any field.

Reality is, any company can find some Eastern Euro and pay him 1/3rd of what a standard tech grad here would be looking for, for a salary that would still far outweigh anything that you’d get at home lol. You’re not some super special exclusive tech pioneer, you’re the financial recession option.

Secondly, as a guy who’s lived the high-life in London and lived in a super wealthy neighbourhood, I can tell you London is fricking shit. It’s a dead, lost, failed city by every metric except it’s economic value and even that is stalling.

Last thing I want to say, which is about your high income/high skilled people should be able to live in cities comment. I find this hilarious because the majority of people that live in cities are the poor, the trash, Muslims, the immigrants (you) and the rest of the undesirables that come along with that. That’s what makes the villages and suburbs so attractive.

London houses are very diverse. From one road to the next the houses can be entirely different

In NYC the male to female ratio means mid men can get laid easily. Is this the case for London too?

No, its harder, there are more men than women and main difference is British are not as outgoing as Americans.

London as a travel destination is perfectly fine: it has imperial grandeur, history, international food on a decent level, skylines and everything you expect from a city of global significance.

London to live in, I imagine, is mid at best. Due to the miserable real estate situation, you have to flatshare and/or communte even as a high-earner, your residential area will be somewhat grim, crowded and chock full of shady nonwhites and trashy Muslim shops.

If living in London is what all young graduates aspire to, because their provincial home town offers less opportunity, I have trouble considering the United Kingdom first world.
