Lost passport in Korea

I'm have two passports (dual citizen) and entered Korea on my Canadian passport. I want to exit but I called the airport and they said they won't let me. I have to leave with the same passport nationality that I entered on (stupid rule but whatever). I know they check too. My questions are:

1. Anyone have any experience losing their Canadian passport? What did you do? How long did it take?

2. Does Korea check your passport when leaving by seaport? If not then I can just go to Japan or Russia (yes, the ferry is open). I don't really want to get my Canadian passport again.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

That’s the law literally everywhere. The same passport that enters (or its legal replacement) has to be the one that leaves.

And assuming your goal would be to head back to Canada, either soon or ever, I feel confident in guessing that Canada requires its citizens to enter (and exit, if they check that?) the country using their Canadian passports.

Sorry for taking the bait, but if you are a real human in this situation you have already been told to go to the Canuck embassy like a functioning human to report that your passport has been lost. Along with being able to get you a replacement of some kind, probably within just a day or two, reporting the loss also has the advantage of making it impossible for some Vladivostok gangster to steal your Canadian identity and/or travel as you (although in practice making real use of stolen passports has been hard to do for a lot of years now).

Fricking obviously, yes, they do. It’s a controlled international border just like the airport.

I wish this were a true story with live updates.

Odd. Canada and some Latin countries I've been to don't check you when you are leaving. I thought most of the world is like this. Guess not.

The US doesn’t check outbound passports, either, but most places I’ve been that either require visas or stamp some kind of indicator of time-limited visa-free permission to stay in the country into your passport when you enter, presumably to guarantee that nobody stays longer than they are supposed to, and/or to be sure that everyone who came in goes out again. In the Korea case, they don’t use exit stamps anymore, but they do look at your documents.

And countries without official exit procedures still track inbound and outbound people, they just do it by compiling passenger lists from airlines (etc.). In the case of Korean ferry terminals, I think the main thing they’re looking for is actually permission to enter Japan, China, or Russia, two out of three of which require most visitors to have visas in advance.

They compile passenger lists from airlines but I can guarantee you that unless you are a criminal on the run they won't do shit. I left Canada on my expired visa, returned years later and nobody gave a frick.
          >I think the main thing they’re looking for is actually permission to enter Japan, China, or Russia
No. Once you leave their country its not their problem. They need to make sure that you are in THEIR country legally. Why would they care that you are somewhere else legally? They dont

Sure you can leave a country without exit controls but if you have overstayed you will be banned from re-entering.

Complete fricking ignorance. If you don’t have what you need to get in, they send you back on the other end. Theoretically this is at your expense, but if you haven’t got the money to buy the return ticket, the ferry company (or airline) is going to have send you back anyway, eating the expense if you don’t eventually pay for it as they will hound you to do. On the other end, some local unfortunate has to deal with your penniless self when you get back to their shores.

Hello, Airport... I have a problem.

The person who answers the phone at the airport (if they ever do) was promoted last week from the cafe.

Go to the embassy and get an emergency passport or whatever those floppy heads give you to travel. It happens a lot. You get to lose a couple days or a week going through a lot of bullshit but that's the cost of losing your passport.
