Mauritius

I'm a zoomer Americanon from the upper Midwest. I'm learning French and plan on moving to France this summer, Marseille in particular. I visited Montreal in December and really felt like I got a lot out of it regarding my French skills, testing out to see where I was and how far I need to go, and the trip was great. So I've decided on doing another trip before I go to France to really get into the swing of the things and have decided on doing a Spring Break trip to a far away, tropical, and French area that's always interested me. It's my last time before I graduate college to do a Spring Break trip(I've never gone on one and I don't want to party or do any of that shit, I just want to go somewhere so I can say I've done one). So I decided on Mauritius.
Any of you fellas have any advice on Mauritius?

You are aware thats a shithole of poos barely roleplaying as French, right?
The place you are looking for is Reunion

      >You are aware thats a shithole of poos barely roleplaying as French, right?
Indeed. I don't give a shit about Port Louis beyond the hotel I plan on staying at, it's all the other stuff there that interests me. And while it's a Jeet island it seems like the nicest Jeet area in the world from what I've read and seen.
      >The place you are looking for is Reunion
Too expensive and filled with Black folk and Muslims. If I wanted that I'd just go to Paris.

The nicest jeet area are the Seychelles by far and if you have the budget for Mauritius it shouldnt be a big stretch

I like Mauritius in theory because it's one big main island and I don't have to spend as much time travelling given the flight is already going to be really long. I also want to hike and do outdoors stuff(to a degree). And the biggest thing is that I want to check out both the rich resort cities to cruise and the historical towns, which you can't do as much on the Seychelles.

Anon that's like saying "I'm moving to Detroit this summer."

They speak Anglais there though, badly.

          Bump

Why not Tahiti? Easier to get to and more fun looking imo. Mauritius doesn't really seem to like tourism, despite being poor and otherwise the perfect place for it. There isn't a lot of things to actually do there and they seem to have banned things that would attract people there, like riding jetskis.

The places that were French but aren't anymore also don't speak really speak French anymore, I don't think Mauritius actually uses french that more but a hybrid english-french-native dialect that is like how Jamaicans speak English. IDK if that matters to you. Nobody goes to Mauritius though so you could say you've went. Nobody goes to Reunion either and they at least still speak regular French there. France also seems to heavily subsidize Reunion and invest a lot of money into keeping the place from wanting to break off France.

            >Anon that's like saying "I'm moving to Detroit this summer."
I know lol, I've got my reasons though.
            >I don't think Mauritius actually uses french that more but a hybrid english-french-native dialect that is like how Jamaicans speak English.
From what I've read they speak French and English fluently alongside their creole dialect. They tend to speak to/with foreigners exclusively in French or English.
            >There isn't a lot of things to actually do there and they seem to have banned things that would attract people there, like riding jetskis.
I'm not really into that stuff given I'm from an area with a lot of lakes. I want to hike, swim, fish, check out the scenes in both the resort towns and the local color in the sleepier local towns.
            >despite being poor
It's actually on par with Argentina/Uruguay/Chile from what I've read. It's far wealthier than most of the Caribbean countries and almost all of Africa apart from the Seychelles.
            >Reunion
Big reason I'm not going to Reunion or any of the French areas is money. It's way more expensive to pay in Euros there compared to the Jeet money in Mauritius.

I just think Mauritius has a lot more going for it than Reunion; Reunion is built like the big island of Hawaii while Mauritius is built like Oahu, if you catch my drift.

Given I grew up around Minneapolis and spent a lot of time there that's my baseline for a city. I've learned that 95% of cities in developed parts of the world are less shit than that, so I feel like I'll be fine.

From what I've read and seen they're typical Pajeetas and some Creole, nothing super special. I'm more interested in cruising the resorts/wealthy areas for women given I like tasteful and wealthy cougars.

Low IQ pajeetas is your usual crowd. Country is like, what, 80% jeets, 10% chineese 5% white and the usual mixbag for the rest.

White will speak French with sometimes heavy local flavor, if you survived Canada it will be alright. Other groups use it only for formal conversation, otherwise they speak creole all day.

I've heard it's best to use taxis to get around the Island.

          >gritty
Depends on the area honestly, all southern areas (coastal) are fairly classy except the vieux port which is kind of dirty especially around the opera house, but has really good bars and restaurants and isn't far from the panier which is great to visit
7th district is very nice and clean, 6th, 8th and 9th as well for the most part, they're the richest parts of the city. 3rd, 14th and 15th are absolute shitholes with no redeeming qualities, don't go there. The rest can go either way but for the most part it's alright

            >Natives don't speak french very well? I thought it was the main language
It’s the main language of the media and most of the education system, but the main everyday language of 80% of the population is Mauritian Creole, which while descended from French, definitely isn’t French. It’s a daughter language with a bunch of influences from other languages, and it’s only partially mutually intelligible with its ancestor language; roughly as close as Haitian Creole, for example, which you may have heard and probably can only sort of understand.

Anybody well-educated (and the country is moderately well-educated) will have solid-to-excellent French, but it won’t be their native language, or maybe not even one they speak every day, and there’s a lot of mixing and hybridization. The local accents are distinctive as well.

To get a little sense of how different Morisien is from French, I thought this video was interesting—speakers of a bunch of different French-based creoles quizzing each other. They get a lot but not everything: https://youtu.be/aEaPGyoswSk?feature=shared

Literally all vlogs on the net mention what a hellhole that country is but he seethes everytime the truth is mentioned and even our personal experiences there. He refuses to accept the truth.
