Morocco

Bought a dirt cheap flight to Morocco for the end of December. I’ve been to many different places but this is my first country in Africa.
Just a few days after I bought my ticket I saw a Reddit rant about how scam ridden/impossibly annoying Morocco is, are these mostly just inexperienced gay redditors or should I cancel this flight? I’m super stoked to go so I don’t really want to cancel, but I also don’t want my fiancé to get gang raped in a Medina or something. Woman is coming with me but she’s going to dress modestly (not covering hair but everything else.)

I guess that answers my question— the reason they were having a hard time is because they were redditors. Worst comes to worst I’ll go to southern spain

Just read through that guys blogpost, sounds like most of what I’ve heard people say. Again I’m a pretty big guy so I don’t think I’ll get physically touched/provoked, even so I don’t think I’d be dumb enough to get myself in that situation regardless. If I did, to no fault of my own I would treat it like I treat any other tout just ignore them. Marrakech I’m expecting to be like Manhattan or something, with dudes trying to sell you mixtapes and spiderman wanting $30 for a selfie.

oh yea also, no one thinks this shit can happen to them dumbass. everyone thinks they're too smart to be scammed and too perceptive to be pickpocketed and too cautious to get robbed. except it happens to everyone and the more you think you're immune to it the more likely you are to be a victim. muggers don't look at your fat gut and cower in fear, they roll up with like 4 dudes carrying knives/guns and take your shit

            >Marrakech I’m expecting to be like Manhattan

I fricking hate the americans who now litter this board.
          Fricking how new are you?
Yes there are scammers and beggers in third world shit holes, ignoring them is part of the experience.

And there's nothing more leddit than referring to yourself as a "big guy" they're not trying to fight some fat americ**t lol.

Can anybody who used to be on trv 2014/15ish tell me where you've all migrated too? election tourists ruined this website.

my trip to morocco was in 2012 and i distinctly remember sharing my stories of the aggressive touts on this board around then and got the exact same reaction as i do now. this mystical golden age of hardened trv swashbucklers you're remembering never existed.

and i've been to plenty of 'third world shitholes' and only encountered anything like this in morocco. this isn't normal or remotely acceptable behavior. frick off.

Well I’ve been to hardly any 3rd world shitholes, and I can still name 2 or 3 that are objectively worse than morocco
Bottom line for me is if a country has good nature, good culture, excellent food, excellent backpacker scene, is cheap and visa-free, well then I can handle getting sold an overpriced carpet once in a while.

The problem is that when bugmen visit Morocco, they only visit tourist hubs, get harassed nonstop by hustlers, and come away with the impression that all Moroccans are rude. It's a shame because Moroccans are undoubtedly the nicest people on earth. If scammers/touts represent 1% of people in Marrakech, but they represent 100% of your interactions with locals, it's easy to understand why one may come away with the wrong impression.
The solution is to give yourself a break by spending a few days in a non-touristy area. Examples of cool places where most of your interactions will be with genuine people: Rabat, Meknes, Essaouira, Tafraoute, Taroudant. Or anywhere in the mountains outside the Toubkal region.
If this is your first time to a country with aggressive hustlers (India, Vietnam, etc) you should expect to fall into their trap a few times, but overall the people who let their holidays be ruined by these guys are gullible enough to deserve it.

I was in Vietnam for month— like i said it’s not my first rodeo, and I’m a built white guy with a beard so I really don’t think I’ll run into as many violent/aggressive hustlers like some are saying. I heard Rabat was mostly industrial with not much to do, but meknes I’ve heard good about— I have no itinerary so maybe I’ll go to Rabat also just to say I was in the capital

I only recommend Rabat because almost everyone passes through it on the way to somehwere else, but no one stops. With 2 hours between buses, you can see the Tour Hassan/Mohammed V mausoleum, visit the old kasbah and take advantage of the quality street food.

I went to Rabat when I went. Fricked a fitness chick with an afro. Besides that, Rabat is different because barely any money bag whites pass through there because it's boring. It was a nice break after constantly hearing "MY FRIEND MY FRIEND MY FRIEND" for two days straight in Fes though.

What a liar, muslim women won't have pre-marital veganal sex. Even Moroccans, Turks, in their second and generation as immigrants in Western Europe won't do veganal sex, they only do anal and oral to preserve their hymens for marriage since their Islamic morality values virginity.

        >I’m a built white guy with a beard

Yes, being a built white guy with a beard means you won't be scammed... Those characteristics will make it impossible.

Your mistake was considering to visit a Mahometan country as a tourist. The Arab countries that aren't oil rich micro-states are all to various degrees failed states. They have very high population growth, high youth unemployment and the youth know they have little hope for a good future. Thus the touts are out of control. Which also synergizes with the fact that they are part of Islamic civilization where killing and conquering infidels is enshrined in their civilization in the Islamic source texts. They are too weak for formal jihad -- but they will settle for the next possible thing, scamming Western infidels that they encounter.

When I say like manhattan, I mean the scams and touts not literally. I’m a genuine fitgay not a fatty, but ur right if I’m getting mugged it’s happening regardless, I meant more people getting pushy trying to sell sht— YouTuber said guys were grabbing his arm and threatening him

You are a moron. The scammers in the USA are mostly drug addicts who make up some bs excuse to give you some sad story: "I'm hungry", "I can't afford a train/bus ticket can you help me out" because they know telling the truth will mean you will never buy drugs or alcohol for their addicted ass.

This is very different from the elaborate schemes of a country like Morocco where you don't know the local Arab dialect. You will be approached by people who seem friendly and offering advice and they will steer you to crooked businesses of their friends/family/employers.

sorry but that still seems like a problem for that particular country to solve. If that kind of hustle and scam is effective or even desirable living, that needs fixed.

Where are you going in Morocco?

Everyone in urban centres will harangue you trying to sell you their grandmothers but if you don’t engage with them that’s usually the end of it. It is extremely annoying initially. Don’t fall for “my cousin’s herb shop”, “I know a good restaurant” etc they’re all scams. Away from the big tourist centres there is much less hassle.

I’m going mostly to the big hub areas but again I have nothing actually booked besides my first 2 nights in Marrakech. I was thinking I’d do a 4 day desert tour that leads up to Fes, stay there a few days then go up to that blue town Chefchaouen. I’ll be there for 2 weeks, so from there I could jump up to tangier (which I’ve heard mixed opinions on) or work my way back down to rabat/Casablanca and then finally back to Marrakech to fly out again

Fes and Chefchaouen are great in spite of the annoying people. IMO the desert tours are a meme but I guess you have to do it once and you'll see some mountains. I spent Christmas at Erg Chebbi a while back and it actually snowed.
I like Tangier but it's more a vibe than a tourist attraction, so maybe not worth adding so much travel time on to your trip.

Marrakech is probably the worst place for hassle, it attracts lots of normies and the locals view them as easy pickings. You do get used to it though

    They are inexperienced gay redditors.
If you can navigate a big city in the west without being hustled, you can navigate Morocco. The difference is that Moroccans turn into real bros when they realise you are not to be hustled.
Now if you are a sperg, this of course does not apply to you.

I second this anon. Morocco, despite the ever present scammingattempts, was one of my best backpacking exp. If they realize you are based in the brain they will leave you in peace. Also go to Chefc. for good haschish.

You'll be fine. It is worse than anywhere I've been in terms of people trying to scam you (and I've been to India twice). Your fiancee might be gangraped if she's white, or at the very least sexually harassed (which you will do nothing about because Redditor).

The high pressure sales guys are only really to be found in the tourist trap areas. Other areas are fine. You just have to assume anyone engaging with you out of the blue is trying to rip you off.

Outside the tourist cities people are either indifferent or very kind. The mountain Berbers are especially chill. When I go hiking in the Atlas, I don’t even bring a tent because I know I’ll always get invited to someone’s house.

    Fricking KEK.

I'm the guy that wrote that Reddit rant, I didn't think it would go anywhere but it hit the first page of Reddit in the first few hours.

I went to Morocco wholly unprepared. For me, I expected the basic negotiations, the overpriced shit, the shops trying to hassle you for every penny you have. What I didn't expect is cafes trying to charge me exorbitant rates for shit I didn't order and going crazy when I refused to pay, I didn't expect confrontations in dark alleys with 3 guys shaking me down thinking I'm going to get stabbed. (I didn't include that in my Reddit post), nor did I expect everyone to be entirely self-serving.

Your picture is the Ksar of Aït ben Haddou. IT's supposed to be free but locals will guard the entrance and ask you to pay to enter, claiming it is for "maintenance". They will get angry if you refuse to pay (you should refuse to pay). It's just so you know that literally, and I mean literally as in LITERALLY LITERALLY, one hundred percent literally, everyone will try to scam you.

Literally everyone will try to scam you in Morocco. Literally everyone. Be wary of everything. If you go to a restaurant and order a bottle of water, send it back if it's already open. It's tap water. Refuse to pay for hidden fees. If a taxi tells you that the price is X, it's actually X divided by at least 5. If you use the laundry service of an hotel and the cleaner asks you to pay upfront, don't (she will pocket the money and you'll have to pay again when you leave). If you have to buy a "stamp" to go visit a place, don't. They will follow you around aggressively anyway.

    Enjoy your stay.

I've visited Morocco every year for the last decade, usually spend 2 weeks to a month at a time. I never have the type of interaction you're describing. If you don't like interacting with people with a financial interest in harassing tourists, what are you doing in Ait Benhaddou anyway? I guarantee if people are targeting you this badly, you're asking for it somehow.

Apparently the European countries dumb enough to host hundred of thousands of hostile Mahometan Moroccan migrants have all experienced mass riots after Morocco defeated Spain in the World Cup. They also did the same when the defeated Belgium to qualify.

And some of you morons want to travel to see this scumbag Muslim “civilization”? You may as well just travel to the worst place in your country of origin which will likely be better than Morocco.
