Most over rated or hated tourist area you've visited?

I went to Hawaii and I was really disspointed. The beaches were impossible to beat but everything else sucked. The locals. The prices. The traffic. The food. Pretty over rated. Much rather go to southern Mexico.

No shit. Everything in the US is overpriced and overrated. Why people waste their time and money in Hawaii when Vietnam, Thailand, Bali or the Philipines offer the same beauty or even better and for 1/8th of the cost is beyond me.

It's international and more expensive to fly there by around $400 RT (though for longer trips, could pay for itself), plus there is a passport requirement and the stigma of sounding like a sex tourist (this is SighSee so there's no shame here). Also COVID-19 testing requirements which Hawaii no longer has.

Auckland is fricking stupid. Rest of NZ is great though.

I think people have caught onto the fact that Munich is a third rate European city, but that was not the case ten years ago when it was being pimped into oblivion by everyone as *the* place you had to go in Germany. What a dreary town.

Pacific NW USA+Canada is seriously the most culturally vacant place on a continent where that distinction really carries weight. And I was expecting a lot more vegetation, it's actually kind of arid. North Carolina has more growth. Olympic Peninsula was based though, credit where its due.

Lima, Peru. Food was mega overrated, way better options in Arequipa and even Cusco. Ceviche was on point (duh) but everyone was trying to reinvent the wheel. Like where were the street carts? Why couldn't I just get a decent Lomo Saltado like I could everywhere else in the country (and even in Colombia and Brazil)? Oh and its a ten million person city where the only thing that sets it apart is the culinary side, there's nothing else about it that rates. And even in that realm it gets clapped by Arequipa, Cusco and Iquitos.

Malaysia sucks. If somebody tries to tell you "Bali is over" and then proceeds to sell you on Malaysia (or honestly anywhere other than Vietnam in place of Bali) disregard everything else they have to say.

All mountain west aside from California and Grand Canyon is over. Whole thing burns, nowhere has any endemic culture left and its all cookie cutter suburb monstrosity sprawl. I seriously cannot think of less appealing cities than SLC and Denvoid. I cannot stand the outdoor chic, the Patagucci'd up yuppies in their Subaru forester with their yapping dogs...holy crap what a joke. I've got my issues with California but its actually gone underrated in the last few years. If you go to Colorado instead of California for your vacation, asusming you have been to neither, you are fricking up. Pour one out for Idaho and Montana which were once based, sorry guys.

Ironically I enjoyed Waikiki (pic related). I found it a good base for doing more adventurous stuff in Oahu than the shit around there, as there were an abundance of cheap, non-waterfront hotels, with parking, grocery stores/convenient stores and cheap places to eat including a lot of japanese food, which, except for the latter, is hard to find on the island.

The most overrated place I've been to though was London. Absolutely depressing city, very gray, very expensive, full of very serious people, very soulless people, nothing particularly interesting I found to buy or do, couldn't find palatable food to save my life, it was all so bland and overcooked. I enjoyed a few attractions like the Tower of London but wouldn't have felt sad if I missed them. Even ethnic food in the UK seemed way watered down compared to what I'm used to. And it rained the entire time I was there. Crossed into France and got off the train to sunny skies and people selling crepes on the sidewalk, dining and drinking in outdoor cafes, buildings that looked exactly what I expected France to look like, completely different vibe and I enjoyed France much more than I thought I ever would despite the fact that it was noticeably dirtier (culturally and otherwise) than the UK was.

In fairness, hard to call London "overrated" since this is precisely what I expected going there, and what I got. I mean London is famous for being depressing, sodden, grey, shit food, neurotic people etc.

I've actually been around the UK as far north as Leeds, Blackpool, down to Bath and all over east anglia. Nowhere in the UK impressed me that much but London was exceptionally dreary.

The exception was the Greenwich Observatory and British museum which I enjoyed... I got to larp a while about being a Brit during the scramble for africa.

Fair enough, though I can't fathom why anyone would go to Leeds or Blackpool. England's charm is in the old medieval villages and towns in my opinion

Tbh the part of the country I enjoyed the most was East Anglia, which did feel like it history was better preserved there, churches from 1000 AD, things like that, in addition to things that had to do with the war, which was the reason for the 1st trip I went on, it was a WWII reunion thing I went on with my grandfather where we visited various sites related to the war, and where he served in it (we also went to France). I've gone back again, as my sister lived in France for a while. I wouldn't make a special trip to go to the UK again though unless it fell into my lap. But I would go back to France.

            >The most overrated place I've been to though was London. Absolutely depressing city, very gray, very expensive, full of very serious people, very soulless people, nothing particularly interesting

I’m from the UK but I have a lot of family and friends in London so I’ve spent a lot of time there in incredibly wealthy areas. I agree with everything that you’re saying a million times over. London is an incredibly soulless place. Horrible people, horrible character, just overall very shitty.

            [...]
You’re talking about 5% or less of the city anon. The fact that you tried to use a neighbourhood in Knightsbridge, literally one of the wealthiest areas in the entire world as representative of London as a whole is quite funny.

            [...]
It’s got great dining, especially high end dining, but the food in a place shouldn’t be defined by the highest end possible. Most of the food in London is corporate chain slop no different to anywhere else.

If you actually think the food in London is better than what you can find in Spain or Greece or Italy, you’re fricking deluded lol.

I was limited to one "nice" restaurant each time I went there but the food was basically comparable to average places on the continent.

I was honestly disappointed with the more plebeian food which usually isn't the case when I go to 3rd world countries. Everything I bought was just super overcooked, like the kind of stuff Trump allegedly ate, well done steak with ketchup. It was also too expensive, everything was a minimum of $10 which I thought was a lot but this was well before Bidenflation, now things cost that much here.

The one redeeming quality London had is French culture (e.g. wine) seemed a lot more accessible there than it is for us in the states.

Hawaii is a tough nut to crack. You have to do enough research. If you go there to wander around or ask people where to go you're going to be funneled into tourist traps. If youre into body boarding you can go ride the cheese grater type stuff.

good. now stay the frick out. haoles go home.

      > The locals suck in Hawaii
      > The food sucks in Hawaii
Did the big island and Maui, beautiful place and worth the trip. Would do Maui again and go to Oahu.

The locals are a total trip, they hate tourists which is so moronic on multiple levels. There's this whole undertone of "we wuz oppressed by the fruit companies 100 years ago so we hate anyone not from here" even though:
      >1. Hawaii's entire economy is dependent on tourism. literally their whole quality of life owes itself due to tourist dollars
      >2.they'd still be living in straw huts killing each other with spears without the settlers having stopped by and putting an end to that. Essentially they had stone age level tech until the explorers stop by.
      >3. Hawaiian history which they talk about every chance they get with a lot of the tourist spots is literally "hikokukoalaho'oo lead warriors to kill this tribe, 20 years later they were killed by this other tribe. The grandson escaped and then killed the second tribe 12 years after that. We call this blood river because of the blood from that slaughter
      >4. Euros arrive, give one guy guns and then his tribe take over hawaii. All the sudden there is peace, trade, quality of life increases, technology.
      >5. fast forward to today, where the visitors still bring the majority of benefits to everyone on the island, but the locals are salty still because reasons?
      >6. The angriest of locals seem to be strung out on herion.
      >7. food is bad. fruit is good, but nothing else is fresh- even the fish is only fresh for local warm-water varieties.
      >8. beautiful beaches though, if youre into tropical nature vibes its a good spot to get your fill. accessible cause no passport and its not truely "wild wild" but more of a cultivated wild similar to national park vibes.
      >9. don't talk about the above points 1-7 with the locals, they get all mad about it for some reason. they also seem to not like being reminded that they're part of the US

Barcelona. The city is indeed beautiful, but it's overrun with subhumans to an apocalyptic degree.

      Subhumans aside.

First time I went to Barcelona I thought it was a shithole. Went in spring so there weren’t many tourists and things didn’t feel right. The bars were relatively empty and I stayed right in the centre, so didn’t bother exploring a crazy amount. Most of the restaurants near me were run down tourist traps or chains.

Came to the conclusion that it was the worst place I’ve ever been.

Went again last month. Weather was amazing. Stayed near Sagrada Familia and it was beautiful. Good mix of locals and tourists, very very few scum walking around and everything was clean, happy and friendly. Local parks constantly had musicians, and atmosphere. The bars were amazing, the beach was great for a city, the architecture is stunning, and again on the people, Barcelona is full of beautiful women. I ended up meeting a Spanish girl, we went for drinks all night. I’m going back next month to see her.

      Honestly 10/10 destination for me.

yea im trying to think if this is ever worth it in the cities ive stayed in
sometimes its nice for the first day to go round the main sights, but after that, being around gypsies and street hustlers amongst the most congested tourists areas isnt worth it when you could be in a comfy part of town, and just make your way over to tourist bit if you have the inclination.
