Also I'm learning Mandarin with Anki. I know around 600 words so far.

Which book / resources are you using to learn Mandarin?

I would recommend learning individual characters before words.

        Anonymous

I know i'm going to sound blasphemous, but why the frick would you learn the characters or even put them out as a priority ? Especially if you're learning it with the intention of going there. You don't need them in theory. Most of times the only required knowledge would be to speak it and nothing more.
Also, to be quite honest, it would be extremely demotivating to focus on learning characters exclusively, because you can't form sentences with those in a vacuum. You need knowledge of grammar and also the ability to form actual words, because while the characters have meaning, they often need to be combined with other syllables to make real words that people use (think xue+xi, study).

I will give you some recommendations.. Keep in mind that we're talking putonghua here aka as standard as possible. Taiwanese mandarin is basically that aside from a very small amount of changes in accents and a few words that aren't the same, but trust me, you don't want to sound like a taiwanese. Also, don't worry to much over choosing trad or simplified. While the switch isn't necessarily simple, it's possible and it's always something you can do once you're in the country. If you're able to recognize simplified you'll basically be able to figure out and guess the changes and you should be able to understand trad in a few months of staying, so don't bother much with it.

I'm putting my recommendations in the next post

          cont.

If you want to lean how to write chinese and learn words, Integrated Chinese is the way to go. I recommend this series of books for self study. Audio resources are available in youtube and they're absolute gold. there's a chinese person in the dialogues that really speaks like a normal chinese person , which is honestly great practice because most resources are basically people speaking like morons and nothing like what you may hear. This is what you should use if you want a fully functional drive of the chinese language, provided you practice regularly. When i'm on vacation, I usually try to go through an entire book.

If you want to take the standardized route of HSK, use the Hsk Standard Course books. By finishing a book of a certain level, you're basically done with that HSK level. The vocabulary from the word list (the good news is that both the book and the list will have overlapping vocab so everything you learn will be used, which is satisfying). I know the audio resources are on youtube too. It is less fun that integrated chinese, but it definitely does the job and is efficient. This is also what teachers online and on-site may use as a resource (or a powerpointified version of it) should you plan for HSK.

My last recommendation is actually very specific and only concerns those who will go to Taiwan to study chinese. IF you do, chances are you're going to NTNU (national taiwan normal uni). If this is what you plan, I heavily suggest you get their book in advance (a course in contemporary chinese). Don't bother learning simplified if you know you're going to take trad classes. Actually, if you really do not like simplified for some reason, you can also use this series of books. It's actually pretty good.

For coomers and ESL teachers who do not give a frick about chinese but still want to know how to get by : Assimil's Chinese With Ease, which skips all the character BS so you can focus on oral Chinese so that b***h can give you oral.

avarege is never the best indicator of anything. For all you know if Jeff Bezos and Musk moved to China the PPP, even divided by the population, whould still significantly rise. It doesn't take account of distribution of wealth, which is what Xi is trying to fix atm.

Buying power and cost of living are two different indexes stupid mutt, the buying power can remain at a certain value completely independant of the Cost of living.
COST OF LIVING IS THE PRICE OF GOODS AND SERVICES, now if you want to put PP into the mix you can, but that would be a whole different index.

I have always been able to live on a small budget. Going to invest my money and hopefully make it out decently wealthy. Not everyone needs a lot of material goods to be happy. My own place, nice friends and a job I enjoy is all I need in life. I have spend my life in America poor so will use this opportunity. A few more years of penny pinching to come out wealthy seem like a good deal to me.

    >You are not allowed to enroll in full-time formal courses in any Taiwanese educational institution. You are only allowed to enroll in Chinese language courses, and even then, the study period must not be longer than 3 months.
    >You cannot apply to turn the Working Holiday Visa into another type of Taiwan visa.
I don't understand why you're hyping this opportunity up so much, unless you really do mean it's for someone with nothing else going on in their lives. If it was for a duration more than 3 months, say 1 year, that'd be cool, but it's not. Am I not understanding your post?

WHVs are a 6 month deal renewable once, i.e a full year. You can basically do whatever the frick you want as long as you do not enroll in a university, which is reasonable since you'd need a student visa. If you really want to learn Chinese, take the mandarin learning visa. You even get a scholarship and have the right to work. You can also take part time lessons.

      >unless you really do mean it's for someone with nothing else going on in their lives.

Taiwan has a booming industry in certain sectors, that actually pay pretty well compared to its cost of life. It has a lovely weather all year around, the people are ridiculously nice, little to no crime/violence, the food is great and you're right in the center of SEA and EA, meaning Japan, Korea, PH, Thailand, are now cheap destinations you can easily visit. And you can actually WORK, meaning that you won't be at a loss after your stay. There are other WHV destinations (such as Japan, Australia, NZ, etc.) and they all are a a once in a lifetime occasion for you to discover a new world with new people and a completely different culture before your thirties. If that is something you believe is not worth doing unless you have "nothing else going on in your life", you either are an astronaut or you're so deep in the rat race you can't consider any other lifestyle.

Even if you're career focused, depending on certain countries (it's possible in Taiwan or Canada but in Japan not so much, for example), you can actually use a WHV to get an edge when it comes to getting recruited abroad. Then once your visa expires, as they now trust that you're not a complete moron and that you became an actual part of the team, getting a work visa will be significantly easier. I know many people who got a job that way btw.

I'm a swe in the US and I can not work abroad, not even nationally. I've been trying to find another job which allows it, but finding another job has proven to be difficult and a job offer only presents itself once/bi-annually. Do you know if there is any demand for foreign programmers who can't speak Mandarin in Taiwan? I have been (lazily) learning Mandarin for almost 1 year now.

I feel an imminent struggle with a chronic disease I have, so I could just apply for a WHV for next year and quit my job, I have enough saved to sustain myself for 5 years in the west. Seems like something a loser would do though. I know losers who've spent so much time traveling and have nothing to show for it, they leech off of mentally ill, wealthy yacht owners and think they're free, flying to different countries just to sleep on peoples couches. Can't build anything meaningful by doing that in my opinion. However, I've only build one or two somewhat meaningful relationship in the past 3 years

if you have a good job just stay in the USA, I worked in Taiwan for 5 years and I knew "tech" people working at the intel building in nangang who made basically what an English teacher makes. Most people there won't make much money unless they are working at a multinational in their own country that sends them there or are at the absolute top of their field. They can hire locals for very cheap for most things so there is not really any opportunity for foreigners.
inb4 some moron says his top of the field engineer or architect friend works there or someshit like that.
Also realize most people lie about their positions and how much they make. The tech people I knew lied through their teeth about it and only told me after we got to know each other more.

Ironically, most expats that do not come from a TEFL background or that didn't come from the MNC system are actually top of their fields, PhDs or 5 to 10+ experience. Why ? Because anywhere else in the world expatriation is something that has been prepared early on. Not everyone is American, earning 500k a year as a software engineer. The good news is that the rest of the world actually gains something when they go to other countries. Also, in those fields, "top of your field" usually just means working in some not-so-bad companies for more than 5 years. You want good wages, go to Singapore and do finance.

            >Do you know if there is any demand for foreign programmers who can't speak Mandarin in Taiwan?
Yes. But unless you work at an MNC, you may earn less. But they have relatively free healthcare, and life is overall cheap there.

Not everyone does that, and who cares ? they're getting good company. Nobody was harmed. Also, this isn't what most WHV do. Usually they're working part time at some bar or restaurant, spending the rest of the week visiting the country, meeting people, sometimes forming lasting relationships and bonds with folks from all over the globe. Some, especially in NZ, just work odd jobs at farms in the countryside and enjoy the beautiful landscapes and hiking trails there.

            >Seems like something a loser would do though
Once you die nobody will care about you being a "loser" or not, except if you believe in God, in which case all he really asks of you is to use that time to do some good deeds and go to church more often. And if you don't, humans tend to enjoy being able to do whatever they want and explore and discover various notions, jobs, places and opportunities.

There's some. I wouldn't call it "demand", more like "yeah they're willing to hire you if you're going to be earning about the same as a local would anyway." Which isn't much. Software is not a respected thing in Taiwan. Electrical engineers? Sure, Taiwan is all about chips. Software? Hah, a monkey could write code.

I've looked around a little at software jobs, and they're earning less (in nominal terms where $1 is $1, not even inflation-adjusted where you look at how much less $1 buys today than it did in 1987) than I was when I graduated with a bachelor's in CS thirty-five years ago.

Honestly, I don't have a link on hand, sorry. Just google it. Don't take my word for it but I think Japan also has something similar ? I'm not sure though. I am certain about taiwan however. Any combination of the words visa, taiwan, scholarship, learning chinese/mandarin should work I guess ? Worst case, call your local "embassy".

Keep in mind however that the scholarship may come with strings attached, e.g no work and obligatory attendance.

lmao 3 of the posts you've cited are mine

I don't know about Koreans but Taiwanese are very nice and polite. They usually match your energy if you're being a positive person, and aren't that xenophobic (but they still are) compared to the region. However they still can be huge dicks and can be weasely little frick. My advice is to act like them when they're nice but be upfront about things when they're being dicks. don't hesitate to reformulate any kind of shitty euphemism they're saying so as to not let them save face.

Also, I've noticed there are two types of Taiwanese. your average normal person and the conservative kind with very strong opinions on a lot of things (usually your boss). I advise you not to profess strong opinions in front of the latter.

I would suggest an Airbnb near your hospital. Book for one month, maybe book for all 3 if you like the pics, talk to the host and if Airbnb allows it. Otherwise you could ask the host when you arrive about extending or book 3 different places for a month each.
In my searches, a nice comfortable Airbnb is at least £1000 a month, probably £1400 depending on area and bedrooms.
You can find cheap ones obviously but I would not cheap out

        Thank you for the info.

I'd suggest AirBnB even though it is ridiculously overpriced. The month-to-month furnished apartments are going to be charging through the nose no matter where you go, and at least AirBnB is easy to use.

Most landlords refuse to rent for less than one-year contracts, some require two years.

Where is the hospital? I'm leaving for the winter and wouldn't mind subletting to a non-psychopath.

That would be convenient. My email is [email protected] if you want to talk about it.

This is a government requirement, not something that most people want to do. If you don't wear the mask, they fine you. And unlike America the courts automatically defer to the policymakers on basically everything.

The only ruling I can think of offhand where the courts didn't say "frick you you have no rights here" was the gay marriage thing, where three TW Supreme Court judges decided that homosexuals should be allowed to get married. THAT got crammed down everyone's throats even though no one wanted it.

        >and afraid of a benign cold.
It's no worse than anywhere else. Most people are tired of the WuFlu Theater, but around a third of the population got brainwashed, and maybe ten percent are hardcore nutjobs.
