New Mexico

Got offered a job in NM on a 2 year contract. I'm visiting this week and it seems cool but I'm only here a few days. Would it be a mistake to move here?

Any positives/negatives of NM would be appreciated

Should also mention I'm a single 26 year old straight guy who makes decent money. I would try to buy a house if I accept the position

      Best post.

I lived in New Mexico for almost 10 years.

      +Food
      +Local Cultural events
      +Weather
      +Nature

      -The people
      -The people
      -The people
-Every level of government is exceedingly corrupt (because of the people).

Now that I'm older, I'd consider moving back if I weren't used to living in a State with 0% income tax. But living in NM through my 20's was rough. If you do move there, here's some tips:

      >Make a plan to move out and stick with it. The locals and transplants call it the "land of entrapment" for a reason. I had planned to live there a few years. Turned into 10.
      >DO NOT DATE THE LOCAL WOMEN. These women are absolutely terrible. If you have a good job, it's not uncommon for them to try and get pregnant to trap you. Cheating is also horrendously common.
      >All the locals are busybodies. They have nothing better to do with their time. Do not let them suck you into their bullshit.
      >The transplants will develop a superiority complex because they usually have good jobs and are educated and compare themselves to the locals with a 50-60% drop out rate and the inability to speak proper English.
      >Santa Fe is pretty, but expensive. Anything you find there can be purchased in ABQ for 1/2 the price.
      >If you're Mexican and have to interact with the locals, just say that you're "Spanish". It'll make your life easier and cause less fuss. And yes, they will ask.
      >If you move, do your due diligence. Certain areas will look safe but have terrible crime rates. Home and car break-ins are not uncommon in big parts of Albuquerque.
      >Learn to enjoy your alone time. Interacting with locals and transplants is exhausting. Spend lots of time in nature. NM has some of the best in the Southwest.
      >Fiestas de Santa Fe is overrated. So are Spanish and Indian Market.

Everyone says the locals are terrible and dating is terrible. How bad can it really be?

fun fact: dating sucks everywhere unless you're a total chad

I've lived in abq my entire life, have a comfy job and a girlfriend in med school. I'll move someday but probably not anytime soon because I've got this weird ass place pretty figured out.

Where are good low key spots for a mid 20s guy to grab a beer? I don't want nightclub shit

depends what part of town you're in. i like hops brewery but i live nearby. if you're closer to downtown and want something kinda quiet hit up bar uno or anodyne. if you want something more crowded and social hit up sister or marble. if you're in the heights.. it's kinda shit. maybe billiards palace

              Stone face has hot waitresses
Howies is a locals bar, older crowd but it's cheap and usually fun
              Plenty of breweries
Sandia sports bar is nice, food sucks tho
Horse & angel has decent food
              The office out west
Brewlab 101 if you get up to Rio rancho

Sister is essentially a nightclub most nights but I will confess to liking their overpriced tacos

        >do not date local women
Second this. It's hard to explain exactly. The standard of behavior for Albuquerque natives is very, very low. Like this guy said, cheating is almost expected. Probably 80% of single women in NM between 21-30 have kids and the dad is always a piece of shit. If you want to date in NM you need to find one of the following
        >works for Sandia labs or los Alamos labs
        >has a graduate degree and good income
        >is not a NM native, preferably a recent transplant
If she doesn't fit at least one of those checkmarks she's going to be a low quality person and you'll regret dating her

            >basic well-known sayings fly over zoomer heads now
he means that you're both gullible incel morons who believe anything. literally every place in the country has dumpy single moms and even if you moved to trad-town USA the woman there would be 100% uninterested in you.
i think that's the gist of it.

What's your job? What city is it in? I would make the decision based on how much you want the job.

I live in CA and don't know much about new Mexico but if you feel you can afford a home there on your salary go for it.

    +1 for
    >NM people suck
People here are generally friendly but there are a lot of morons who are insecure about being dumb and poor. I wore business casual attire to a dive bar here once and half the guys in there were looking at me side eyed like they wanted to fight me
