New Mexico

I've lived in Colorado for a decade and never considered visiting New Mexico. Is it worth a visit or is it as shitty as everyone says?

Lincoln national forest was one of my favorite days during my FL to CA bike trip. Town at the top has a really good bbq place, very friendly and tasty. Alamagordo and carlsbad are the two closest cities to there and neither of them are very special but west of alamagordo is the white sands national park and a military high frequency laser testing facility then ur in las Cruces. The gila national forest is something i regret having missed out on, hot springs and an ancient native cliff dwelling. Instead of that i went south to el paso and west from there next to the border, less hills. Theres a rlly cool artist comune down there 60 miles west el paso called kingdom of the sun, i stayed in a hippie ladys magic bus there, good vibes. That's what i know about new Mexico, try to go in the winter, it's much nicer

Born and raised in Albuquerque (Have also traveled a lot)
It’s very beautiful, also the 5th largest state so don’t expect to see everything in one trip. Coming from Colorado I recommend you start in Taos, kinda hippy dippy place but the natural setting is staggeringly beautiful. Try to see the Taos pueblo although it’s been closed a lot lately so check ahead. You could do santa fe but that place bugs the shit out of me, very expensive and filled (i mean filled) with white texas/california tourists. If you do go there I recommend the Rail yard and upper canyon road. If you’re into history La Cienaguilla petroglyphs are cool and like 15 minutes from the plaza. I highly highly recommend the Valles Caldera, you can drive in from Los Alamos and soak it in. Stop in Jemez Springs on your way down, you can check out the historic sight or just hangout at the biker bar. From their you can either go to Albuquerque or up 550 towards Farmington. If you’re headed that way go to chaco canyon. It’s a heavy place but one of the most interesting sights in all of north america. Assuming you’re gonna pass through albuquerque I recommend stopping at the frontier and getting green chili stew or enchiladas. it’s cheap it’s fast and the vibes inside are all the best of albuquerque. You’ll like it, it’s not as shit as everyone says but be aware of burglary, they won’t rob you directly but they’ll smash your window as soon as you turn around. Park near other cars and in the light you’ll be fine it’s never happened to me in over 20 years of living in ABQ.

They do. And they still sell them by the dozen. But now you can go to costco and buy the uncooked flour tortillas they stock and they unironically taste and feel just like the frontier's do for pennies on the dollar.

Chaco Canyon is badass. Just be wary about travelling the unpaved southern road during the rainy season - when I went in January my Rogue almost got stuck in the mud and she can handle deep snow with ease. I had to take the long way back through the North entrance and spend an extra 2 hours driving back to Gallup the long way through Farmington. Worth it tho

What is going to happen to the property value of a condo in metro albuquerque? Are zillow estimate numbers reasonable?

        Anonymous

We're looking at a short-term decline in real estate. Probably 15-20% if I had to guess, over the next few years. But don't hope for anything pre-pandemic levels. That ship has sailed. (Bitcoin's the long-term play if you want to beat real estate appreciation.) Zillow estimates are just that: estimates. The best gauge will always be checking what similar units in the area last sold for.

But yeah, I wouldn't hold your breath on ABQ crashing more than 20% or so. We're in a brave new world.

Morgan Stanley just recently said a "worst-case" 20% downturn would only be likely with a prolonged recession and a vast increase in unemployment. Take that as you will.

What's the likelihood of the market crashing if the US goes into a recession?

All the research I've read basically concludes that a worst case scenario would see prices come back to 2020 levels. The days of prepandemic prices are gone simply because of how much everything appreciated.

Abq is a weird market where I don't see us having as much upside as other states because nobody really wants to move to this weird ghetto place even if prices are attractive. But I also don't see a massive wave of selling depressing prices here either. With mortgage rates where they are now anyone who bought their house here in the past few years is basically trapped.

I’m sure they said the same thing every time there’s been a housing bubble in history. Maybe they’re right, but I don’t trust them any more than my friends realtor mother who keeps saying now is the perfect time to buy. If rates keep getting hiked into next year, housing will have to come down or literally no one will buy. Mortgages now are already far more expensive than they were even a year ago.

nature gay here, been to NM a few times, underrated place. Carlsbad Caverns is great, one of my favorite national parks. Easily my favorite cave I've been in, only good cave I've been to that you don't need to be on a guided tour also which is nice, though there are guided tours to other parts of the cave also. Haven't even seen the bat flight at Carlsbad since I always go to NM in winter when I'm snowed out from places further North, heard it's great though, must be if it's anything like the bird flights you can see at Bosque del Apache. Definitely recommend Bosque del Apache in winter, even if you're not really into birds or nature, seeing thousands or tens of thousands of large birds take flight is a special experience.
White Sands is neat enough, worth a stop.
The Sangre de Cristos around Taos are nice, nothing specatcular though, I find Valles Calderas more interesting.
The Gila Canyon area is beautiful, Jordan hot springs is an excellent backcountry hot springs, it's an adventure to get there though, if you're into backpacking at all it's a great area.
Northwest New Mexico has a lot of Badlands with crazy formations, pretty cool. Chaco Canyon is nice too, largest pueblo ruins I think, Not as scenic as Mesa Verde in Colorado but you can walk through them on your own which is nice. Lots of other Native American ruins around New Mexico also.
I've somehow neer even driven through Albuquerque or Santa Fe, I'd like to see the balloon festival sometime.

The American food here is meh, and the other ethnic foods here are better in other states. AZ, CA, TX all mog the frick out of NM for food.

I had the opportunity to move to ABQ and Rio Rancho was where I was looking and it seemed nice. Commuting isn't bad compared to other cities in the country but I just couldn't
force myself to live there. NM has this feeling of inescapable desperation almost everywhere you go unless its somewhere very upscale, its hard to explain but even the deep south didn't feel like that to me. The place just feels rough around the edges and low class to the point that even Phoenix or Reno seem high class by comparison. Plus white is minority in NM and you can tell. It's like Hawaii, if you're "from here" people can tell and you get treated differently than if you aren't. After spending a few days there I couldn't wait to leave.

I've lived in Colorado for a decade and never considered visiting New Mexico. Is it worth a visit or is it as shitty as everyone says?

If you live in Colorado there's things worth seeing. Just don't plan more than a couple days in NM.
NM food is pretty legit if you can find a place that does it well and isn't touristy AF. The Sandia Peak tram/trails are a hidden gem. The white sand dunes are absolutely worth a visit. Carlsbad Cavern is a maybe but its near the dunes. Santa Fe is worth a short visit.

The mountains in NM are basically like those in Colorado but the towns e.g. Chama feel noticeably more poor than those in the same environments in Colorado.

                >things worth seeing
like some other anon said, this may apply if youre some 20-something that needs to be HITTIN UP THE CLUB every weekend. but for normal well-adjusted adults, there's plenty of things to do.
