nice or marseille? South France Honeymoon

Going to end my honeymoon in the South of France. Wondering what the best spots are. We will be there towards the end of may and just looking to chill, drink wine by the sea, and enjoy some small country villiages. We will be flying in to either nice or marseille, so somewhere closerr to those airports would be best.

Nice is obviously far better. What's your budget like? If you have money to burn you could go to nearby St Tropez. Or Monaco.

I would say anywhere from 1-2k for 3 nights if I ahd to put a number on it. The trip will be all over southwestern europe, and we have about 10k budgeted for 3 weeks, exluding flights.

Do not go to marseille full stop. The shit ghetto starts 300m from the central railway station, walkable tourist area is just few sq. kilometers and the rest of it is a sea of dirty arabs. Disgusting city.

Nice and its surrounding without a doubt.
Marseille is a third world shithole.

I was in sourthern France in September and Nice is superior to Marseille. I'd even go as far to say it's the best city I've been to in France. Its more Italian than French. Also just 30 min train/bus from Monaco and the Italian boarder.

Marseille is literally an Arab city at this point.

You know how the southern tip of Texas is American “in name only” ? That’s how Marseille is with France

      >Marseille is literally an Arab city at this point.

Guess what, moron, it has always been that way. Marseille, Massalia was a port founded by eastern ancient greeks (who would be todays turks).
It was a mediterranean port for a good millenia before France even existed.

this is deliberately obfuscating. You and I know well the Arabs came to Marseille en masse only after Algerian independence.

What was done by a completely unrelated ethnic group (pagan Greeks) around 2600 years ago has nothing to do with the dramatic shift in the city's demographics since the 1960s.

What was the arab population of Marseille in 1960?

I will do better, what was the arab population of Marseille in 960?
The arab presence was so strong that some Provencial cities have literally been named by arabs.
Like Ramatuelle that comes from the arab "Rahmat-ûllah" (God's mercy).

Not saying it was always that way, but Marseille is literally a mediteranean port. The south of France has never been some pristine aryan land like Rivendell or whatever.

Why obfuscate history and bring up little stupid points like that, I mean Bismarck North Dakota has nothing to do with the German empire but it’s called Bismarck nonetheless.
Why do you have to cover up that the demographic shift, promoted by governments and media and academia, isnt as extreme and extraordinary and world changing as it obviously is.

Monaco is the superior choice if you want South of France, because it isn't France.
If you really want something in France get out of big cities like marseille and nice.
You can find small cities with luxury hotel like Bandol but they are all dead cities, you will be very fine in any of them if you want calm but bored as frick if you stay in.
Small villages are the best to visit but you need to know which one exactly has what you want and any hotel in them will be very very poor.
So it depend a lot of what you want, the best is probably to pick a nice luxuary city and then go out to visit small villages by yourself.
Also get a fly to the Toulon airport, it is superior.

Don't do either one. Have your honeymoon in Cassis. Check out Aix too. Nimes and Arles are cool spots for Roman ruins.

looks comfy. Maybe a short road trip from Nice to Casis before flying out would be fun?

Definitely. There are a bunch of wineries in Cassis. The Calanques are amazing for hiking. We got a giant waterfront Airbnb for like $120/night in September 2018.

      Marseille? Are you insane?

      Fearmongering
Marseille is nice, just like any major city avoid certain places like les quartiers du nord.

The Italian riviera > the french riviera.
You can fly into Nice and use the train to visit Antibes, Cannes, Grasse, Monaco, etc. Then take the train to Genova, Liguria. And end in Portofino.

We are heading to Nice from Rome, so maybe we check out the spots along the Itallian riviera on the way? How efficient is traveling by train time - wise? Would I be able to make my way from Rome without wasting more time traveling than I would by plane?

Rent a car so you can randomly stop anywhere without any hassle.

I would definitely recommend rail travel in your situation. There is high speed rail from Rome (via Florence and Pisa) to Genova.
Genova to Nice (via Monaco) is regular train and the journey takes 4 hours.
An option to visit Cinque Terre, you can get off the train in Pisa, rent a car and do a road trip up through the Ligurian coast and return the rental car in Genova, then take the train to Nice.
My wife and I enjoyed the province of Liguria and felt the people were quite hospitable. The food and quality of accommodation is better and cheaper than neighbouring south of france.

I'm from Marseille and also lived in Nice.
For a honeymoon you should go to Nice obviously it's safer and cleaner. Your gf will love it.
But if one day you want travel in the area alone or with friends (male) you should try Marseille, it's a very interesting city. Just keep the same mindset you would have if you visited an okay third world country.

I’m going to disagree on rail travel. I just did a month in Italy and honestly it wasn’t really much cheaper than just flying places, and it takes longer. I thought I’d get the authentic European experience taking the train everywhere, but really all that happened was me being crammed into airplane style seats with obnoxious Italians taking up 3/4 the row despite being half my size. They will also just take your window seat if they arrive there first. Also, the windows are dirty half the time to the point you can’t see particularly well outside of them anyways. The internet on them doesn’t work for shit, and cell service is spotty. Overall, it felt pretty pointless. If it’s only an hour or two, like Rome to Florence, sure why not. But any longer and I fail to see the advantage over flying besides not having to go through security. And security at FCO was way more efficient and nice than anything TSA manages back home in the states.
Personally I’d listen to the anon that recommended renting a car so you can go wherever and stop anywhere, but if not I’d say flying is the move for anything over an hour or two. My 4 hour train ride back from Venice to Rome was complete ass. Tickets one way are anywhere from 30€-100€ depending on when you book - make sure you book a couple weeks ahead at the very least. I do not think any of the train tickets are cancellable either, and if you need to change your ticket you either need a more expensive one or pay an extra fee when you do so. My same day train ticket from Venice to Rome was damn near 100€.

This is going to sound rude but how could you type an entire paragraph to disagree with a post you are replying to without even reading the post properly?
OP wants to go from Rome to Nice for the end of his honeymoon and my suggestion for his situation is to take the HSR from Rome to Pisa, rental car tour the Italian riveria (which is arguably superior to the French riviera), return the car in Genova and take the train to Nice.
I agree with you that rail travel in Italy is underwhelming, but it would be a shame if OP decides to fly directly from Rome to Nice and skip on the most beautiful coastline in the country. Arguably better than the French Riviera, but technically that entire coastline is "Italian" because it was territory of the Republic of Genova all the way up to Marseille.
