No checked luggage, packing light on a long trip

So I'm off to N America from Europe for a few months with my gf. We have a place sorted, all furnished. When I booked my flight I chose just carry on luggage since checked would cost an extra 200 euros, which I could afford but it seems so extortionate for 20kg. I tend not to wear many sets of clothes and dress light, I also don't care too much about possessions, most of my stuff in my current room I don't touch. All I really use day-to-day is my laptop for gaming, social media etc. I'm outdoorsy and social but that doesn't require stuff. But my mother found out I'm planning to pack light and she's really worried and mad, saying I need checked baggage. I figure anything I need I could buy out there if and when. Am I being stupid, should I just take the hit if I can afford it? I remember last time I travelled with a lot of baggage I struggled to fill it.
Any tips on what to bring/not bring? I also don't know how long I'll be staying, maximum 4 months, so going into December, and I don't have much cold weather clothes anyway. I don't see the point of buying it in Europe, then paying to fly it out.
Anyone else travel light?

Why do you let your mother dictate what you should or shouldn’t bring? Bring what you think you’ll need and if it turns out that it wasn’t enough you just buy it in burgerland

Clothing is much cheaper in the US anyway. Just be prepared to look like you shop at walmart. You could do the backpacker thing and wear boots and a winter jacket on the plane to maximize the clothing you take then take it off. You'll look silly since its august but won't have to pay, right?

Also FU op for making me realize Christmas is so close already.

N America is a horrible place. Why the frick would you come here? Just visit any of the hundreds of beautiful cities in Europe.

    so
you're going on a long trip with your girlfriend
but you're being cheap about it
you're bringing a laptop for gaming
and you're letting your mother stick her nose in to your travel plans
and you're asking SighSee for advice about it
dude your girlfriend is going to dump you at the first opportunity for someone who isn't a cheap manchild and can think for themselves
also what intercontinental airline charges 200 euros for a first piece of checked baggage anyway?

I have a friend who visited the US and did the same thing. US immigration gave him a hell of a time, didn't believe that someone would travel for 4 months with only carry on luggage. He had to give them a ton of stuff to convince them he wasn't illegally looking for work so make sure you can prove that you can afford this.
