I often fall asleep right after I board and wake up in the middle of the flight so I often miss flight mode. No big deal.

You don't even know how cellphones work, you're that stupid, infinite technology at your fingertips, infinite information, and you sit there...dick in one hand, pornhub in the other consume consume consume. Bags of wasteful shit. Society should take you out back and shoot you both in the back of the head and dump your bodies for the birds to eat. Is airplane mode necessary if nobody ever calls or texts you ever?

Yeah, it can drain your battery fast as it’s looking for a phone service. You don’t receive any signal up there. And if you do get signal, you might get a nasty surprise especially in a different country.
And in some countries, especially Asians, it’s more or less a strict requirement.

You're both total pieces of shit and I hope you fricking choke dead. You put everyone's life in danger because you're too stupid and lazy to be bothered to do anything. Thank you for explaining, but my question was more about: are there negative consequences for the crew of the plane if I don't put airplane mode on, if I don't get calls or texts and put roaming off?
Why is airplane mode necessary? Why do they care if I drain my battery?
Just to be clear, I always put airplane mode on because I have no reason to not do that, but I'd just like to know why I have to do it.

        >you might get a nasty surprise especially in a different country.
        >And in some countries, especially Asians, it’s more or less a strict requirement.
Can you tell us more about this?

Airplane mode/turn off all devices is the blanket statement given because they can't realistically state every device nor name every random cellphone to chinese bootleg console some kid is using which COULD interfere.

Aside from that most times something is going to go wrong that has the biggest risk to passengers is generally on take off and landing here if an abort take off, failure, or tail strike occurs it's best to people not be glued to their screens unaware someone is telling them to brace.

It's simply easier to keep the rule in place and use laymens terms for all electronic devices like cellphones/laptops/ipads from a safety stand point than anything else. No there isn't a 100% issue with YOUR device that could be a brand new cell phone on take off, but maybe Joe Dirt who has a chinkpad with some whacky ass bullshit radio from Hong Chink co, may be doing frick all else when communications need to be absolutely clear from plane to com tower and crew to passengers.

tl;dr It's just another way of telling people to pay attention to the plane taking off.

Microwave engineer here, and i'll give you the final answer.

If you're just one fricker doing it far from the wienerpit then you have nothing to worry about. Most planes dating past the 90s (so pretty much all planes) have good EMC specs. the whole "don't use your phone" thing was far more problematic back in the 00s because there were still some shitty planes who didn't quite make the cut. The biggest issue we have regarding EMC is that it might frick with the GPS as cellular frequencies are pretty close to em, but that issue is now solved. Still, if the2 first row of passengers started acting like complete morons and called at the same time, chances are the instruments might flicker a little.

            >but maybe Joe Dirt who has a chinkpad with some whacky ass bullshit radio from Hong Chink co, may be doing frick all else when communications
If Joe Dirt thas a chinkpad that is able to multiply microwave frequencies in order to switch from cellular to GPS and other vital frequencies, his real name is Abdullah Al Amirikiy, and his "chinkpad" is a sabotage device.

You must not fly often because this is a non issue to anyone with a non room temp IQ, sorry when you actually grow up you may realize companies and such often overstate as a way to cover their ass for the unexpected.

You don't even have to do it anon, it's mostly a relic from a time when big ass cancer phones might have interfered with air traffic, and also we didn't understand telecommunications that well back then, so it was better to be safe.
Planes are still relatively well shielded against EM waves anyway, after all they get hit by lightning and radiation all the time

          >are there negative consequences for the crew of the plane if I don't put airplane mode on, if I don't get calls or texts and put roaming off?
          No.

          >Why is airplane mode necessary? Why do they care if I drain my battery?
They don’t. It’s not their problem. It’s a recommendation and a relic from the past.

          >Can you tell us more about this?
Nasty surprise is, if you ever get signal, you might pay more because you’re in another country.
And Asians require it because they are autistic and I am actually thankful because, especially chinks and pinoys wouldn’t even put down the phone if nobody scared them. You wouldn’t want to hear a Chinaman screaming on his phone and streaming his shit loudly at takeoff. In fact, in Chinese airlines, you cannot use any electronics at all, not even a video game console or a game boy during take-off and landing, cannot even listen to music with headphones. It’s more of a discipline thing.

if having airplane mode off is really dangerous to the plane then why do they just trust some random buttholes do it by themselves?

      >if having airplane mode off is really dangerous to the plane then why do they just trust some random buttholes do it by themselves?
It’s not, really, in practice. But there has always been a concern that radio waves from personal devices have the potential to interfere with plane communications systems; radio waves of similar frequency are used by air traffic control safety systems, so cell phones can theoretically (and maybe sometimes do?) create false collision-risk alerts—sometimes automated systems can mistake the signal of a phone seeking a cell tower for an off-course aircraft nearby, or so I have read. They used to have warnings against playing with radio-controlled toys in-flight, years ago, before cellphones were widespread, for the same reason (I may be the only person here who remembers this). Risk is evidently more serious if you’re on a small plane like a private jet than on a big commercial airliner.

But as far as I know, no plane has ever crashed as a result of a phone.

No gas pump has ever been exploded by a phone, either, for what that’s worth. In both cases it’s mostly a CYA/just in case scenario.

Far as I read a phone not being on airplane mode has never directly lead to a crash, but what happens is that when enough phones are in use on high altitudes it produces enough noise to cause static noise on some of the equipment that the pilots are using, annoying and potentially distracting them, but it won't frick with the equipment in any direct way.
