You're kinda fricked. The best you can hope for is to pay extra for expedited service and hope they don't keep you waiting too long. Last time I renewed mine, I did it the usual way and it only took about a month. You can get it done at the post office.

I got a temporary 'emergency' passport within 24 hours, but I outside of the country. Perhaps you could cross over into Mexico or Canada on your diver's license and then hit up the embassy to say you were robbed, whatever. It'll be good for 1 year.

I'm not american. But once I've got a passport overseas as I lost my previous one. Took 1 or 2 days to get it (and a heavy fine). It was valid for 5 years and I had no problem travelling with it.
That said, you should just take the usual path, OP. Just pay extra for expedited service and, perhaps, if possible, order it in another city after searching where passports are faster delivered. There must be some kind of tripadvisor/flyertalk/reddit posts about that.

Go down to a local passport office and see what they can do.

Contact your congressman's office -- many don't do much to help with passports any more, but some do. If you have a particular reason to need one in a hurry, tell them about it.

    >Book a flight and hotel
    >email your congressman and say “I have an emergency trip to _______ booked and can’t get a passport in time, please help”
    >Congressman will make you an appointment to get a same day passport wherever the nearest passport office is (be ready to treacle there’s only one per state). Appointments are usually within 48 hours of your travel date and only do this if you’re prepared to spend a full day at the passport office as you’ll be there all day.

It's easy to get a passport in 1 day......what you need:

    1. STATE ID/DRIVERS LICENSE

    2. ORIGINAL OR CERTIFIED COPY OF BIRTH CERTIFICATE

    3. SOCIAL SECURITY CARD

    4. US PASSPORT FORM DS-82 (PASSPORT RENEWAL)

    5. COMPLETE AIRLINE ITINERARY SHOWING INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL WITHIN THE NEXT 2 WEEKS

When all your documents are in order, call the US state department at and make an appointment at one of the regional passport agencies. Make note that these are only located in major cities...NYC, LA, Chicago etc. Also make note that they do not entertain walk ins. YOU MUST MAKE AN APPOINTMENT.

If you follow these instructions you will have your passport the next day

    YOU ARE WELCOME

How close are you with your extended relatives? If you have any aunts, uncles, or cousins that you're in regular contact with, they are legally allowed to vouch for you.

I normally don't recommend this, but try asking Passport Canada's official Twitter, and see what kind of answer they give:
