    A couple close calls:
At Hamburg Hbf some guy taps me on my left shoulder. I should've looked or turned right but of course I turned left. Pretty sure they rifled through my jacket pocket, luckily there was nothing in there for them to take.
In Cambodia I was on the ferry crossing the Mekong River and went to get back on the bus, but a mob of kids were at the door. Of course they tried to reach everywhere they could as I got on.

Not yet, but i have observed them scanning for victims. When you sit at a touristy place and eat your food you'll start noticing them

Honestly, as long as you don't look like a complete fricking gay or victim, there's no reason you should be subject to pickpockets or theft.

No man (I mean actual man) should be victim of this. It's literally just soys and morons that are. Same with general theft and roberr. Total non issue if you're actually a self-respecting adult male with any kind of physical prowess or self confidence/awareness.

There's only a handful of places I wouldn't frick around (South Africa, parts of South America etc where the cost of life is virtually non existent).

LOL. I'd love to drop you off on Cottage Grove on the South Side of Chicongo and watch you impress the local wildlife with your chadness, Chad.

Lived in Chicago for years, this wouldn’t be too difficult to deal with.

In that situation, it’s fine as long as it’s before 2pm, after that there will be ravenous Black folk frothing at the mouth everywhere.

Criminals are opportunists, and if you stick to main streets with other people on them, you can just walk to the train station and be fine.

Waking down side streets past encampments of thugs just hanging out on the porch during a typical work day would be a bad idea, but most of the time it will be okay, as they only murder each other, “mutual combatants” as one Chicago judge said, no reason for the DA to press charges.

Not about being a badass. The reality is pickpockets don’t want confrontation or even the chance of them getting into a physical altercation. They want quick grabs from unsuspecting victims, clueless Chinese tourists that don’t even know the emergency number, old women, people that leave bags open on tables in busy streets, so on and so fourth.

Not to mention, having a bit of situational awareness. Don’t keep your fricking wallet hanging out of your back pocket period.

I always travel with one friend. We’re both early 20s and we’ve been in our fair share of fights, crazy situations growing up etc. We’ve been to plenty of sketchy places and nothing bad has ever happened. Got run up on by a group of 5 Africans at 4am in Barcelona for example, they didn’t do shit once they approached us because we held our ground and were a lot more collected than they were. Simply not being intimidated, (by which I don’t mean being guarded, confrontational or pacified) goes a long fricking way in your favour.

Again, all of this goes out of the window in certain places. I wouldn’t frick around in South America, Africa or (the darker) parts of the USA personally.

      Anonymous

This is getting a lot of flak but it’s true. Four months in South America nobody even tests my girlfriend and I when we’re together. I leave her alone thirty minutes to go swimming? Someone tries to take our backpack while his accomplice distracts her. To her credit she caught them and they ran off, but that’s how quickly it turns.

Criminals look for the path of least resistance. Robbery is not a line of work where you want to frick with the wrong person, and those who do don’t last very long doing it. So they prey on women, people who are obviously lost and/or oblivious, the physically weak, etc. As long as you outwardly appear not to be these things you will be absolutely fine in all but the sketchiest areas. You simply need to present yourself as enough of a threat that any sensible thief will consider you not worth the risk. Seeing as fifty percent of the population is women this should not be too difficult for a man.

        Anonymous

Exactly anon. You summed this up well. Pickpockets are fricking scum, and at the end of the day, the last thing they want is causing an altercation that is going to disrupt their income. Why would they try and steal from a guy that might turn around and break their fricking jaw or grab them by the neck, whilst they can easily put a hand into a purse, grab a phone out of some mothers back pocket whilst she’s dealing with her kids in a crowd of people, swipe a bank card off a table whilst they’re trying to figure out a map, so on and so fourth. Who, realistically, even if they do get caught by, aren’t exactly going to do much in defence.

walk through a crowd in beijing with a camera bag and see what happens.

In that super specific scenario, where you’re absolutely surrounded by people, you should be fricking aware of your belongings at all time. Not being so is moron tier.

My only interaction with what I assume was an aspiring pickpocket was with a literal child in a non-risky place—some kind of guttersnipe fourteen or fifteen year old hanging around inside some construction scaffolding in the tiny dodgy bit of Geneva. Walking through scaffolding-shielded sidewalk, kid asks for a light, I give him one, he awkwardly grabs my wrist and makes some dumb broken English joke about showing me some kung fu. I jerk my hand from his grasp, slap him, he runs away.

      >dont be afraid to just grab people's hands or wrists if they're in your shit.
also, never let anyone close the distance on you. I'm a naturally situationally aware person (read: paranoid), you just have to pay attention to two things:
      1. beware anyone who approaches you and tries to distract you with something (here is a bracelet, buy my maps, 'you come this way') etc. your first thought should go to "where are this person's hands" "who is standing behind me"
      2. Groups of 'static' people you're forced to walk through.

      >but a mob of kids were at the door. Of course they tried to reach everywhere they could as I got on.

Worst than pickpocketers now in Europe are the MENA gangs (moroccan, algerian, and some rumanian mixed in the sack) that operate in Barcelona freely....... I dont know if they attack people the same way in other EU cities... but Barcelona since the leftist major came in has become like the bronx in the 80s

Keep a thick rubber band wrapped around your phone/wallet when you travel. It will make it stick in your pocket so that it's hard to remove stealthily. Also, keep your valuable shit in your front pants pockets, those are the hardest to steal from.

Boomer here (just letting you know that I'm not some twig armed pansy like yall) was in Barcelona about 5 years ago after walking the Camino, saw that one movie where the gay millenial died of aids so his based (as yall wiggers say with ur Blackspeak) boomer dad had to finish the job, anywho, I had arranged for my lawn to be cut by my neighbor Bob who I have known since he and the wife moved in in the 80s so we go fishing and hunting and so on (n titty bars too when the missus is away) anywho I was feeling jacked after walking all that way hoisting my pack and my 40s, lost some weight (although I will never have abs like Ellen Page ) I was looking good feeling good and some scrawny Somali came up trying to put some rainbow gay bracelet on me and tried to squeeze my ass (I realized later that he wasn't fondling my turd cutter he was feeling for my wallet) but we don't take kindly to queers where I'm from so I grabbed his tiny skullet and forced it down as I kneed its chin. Little b***h crumpled to the ground, not that I looked back I was thirsty. Popped into a McDonald's got a McChicken menu as they call the value meal here, biggie size cuz only about

Only really happened to me in London. I was eating at McDonalds in Holburn and (like a moron) left my phone out by my food on the table. Some shitskin with a sign comes up and starts begging at the table next to me (a couple, both non Londoners, a German and a girl from the midlands based on her accent), and they say no, so he moves to my table. I firmly say ‘no’ and keep eating my food. He’s getting aggressive now and trying everything he can to get me to look up at him. When I do he puts his flimsy ass sign down over my phone.
    >oh hell no
I grab his arm and try to snatch his sign out of his hand. He jumps back, genuinely surprised, and puts his hands up defensively. I push him away and he starts hauling ass out. I go back to eating my food. Couple next to me call me a ‘racist b***h’, so I get to spend the next five minutes of what should have been a pleasant lunch explaining to these naïve idiots what a distraction scam is.
