Redpill me on Chicago

I'm considering living in Chicago. More specifically, downtown but northside. What is the culture and people like? Dating scene? Women? Are the men bros? Pros and cons?

River North and Old Town are mostly yuppies fresh out of college, the people you see on the street there will be ex-frat guys or sorority girls now working for their dad's firm downtown. Go a little west to Bucktown, Logan Square, or Wicker Park and you'll run into hipsters burning through their trust funds while trying to make a name for themselves in abstract basket weaving.
      >Dating scene? Women?
I don't know what it's like now post-Covid but when I lived downtown from 2012-2017 you could just go to a bar or club - whatever kind suited your vibe - and try your luck at picking up girls. All the places I used to frequent (Evil Olive, Neo) are closed now, though. Tinder is popular but personally I never used it. The closer you get to the Loop the more sugar babies you'll run into, these girls usually won't give you the time of day unless you own a yacht.
      >Pros
It's a city with a rich history, nice art and music scenes, the Loop (downtown area) is pretty cool - but admittedly it's no match for something like NYC. The pizza is the best in the world.
      >Cons
Brutal winters, west and south sides are basically militarized no-go zones, blue state, a little bit more expensive to live in than it's worth.

      >ex-frat guys or sorority girls now working for their dad's firm downtown.
That's really disappointing to hear. Because I'll most likely be in Streeterville and I'm sure it's no different than River North in that regard. I fricking loathe people like that so that's a bummer.

Yeah, sure. I've lived in a lot of different parts of the country and I always meet decent people despite hearing how bad they are, so it's not something I worry about much when I'm moving somewhere new.

Isn't the opposite often said of Chicago? It really does feel like a hidden gem sometimes. Everyone knows of Chicago but it's not overcrowded or insanely priced while still living in a relatively safe and clean urban area. One of the best urban areas at that, if you're really looking for that "city" life. It's like a more affordable, refined version of NYC.

Chicago is cool but idk where you get the idea it’s that much more affordable than other tier 2 metros in the US. Yeah it’s not NYC/LA prices but it’s still expensive as frick. Driving there also fricking blows. Like it takes an hour to go 3 or 4 miles type shit.

I went a few miles west once and got off the bus and was staring at my phone on the corner, and some dude pulls up in his car and starts screaming at me as loud as he can. Face all red, maybe even crying before.

He was screaming at me so loud I was more surprised, and realized I wasn't sure where I was so didn't react and just blankly looked at him which pissed him off even more lmao.

What does that even mean? Penn and U of Chicago are better schools than anything in DC and all of the money is being made in California these days anyway.

Chicago is what NYC would be if the car had been invented 50 years earlier than it was. They are pretty much the same except Chicago winters are worse and Central Park is way better than Grant Park.

As a non american, i literally never heard of Grant Park.
There's films about Central Park, tv-shows, music, books... There's no comparison to be made.

Grant Park is based, judging a place based off how many movies it’s in is fricking moronic.

Good food scene and a great city for architecture nerds like me. The weather can be unforgiving during certain parts of the year where walking between buildings can mean freezing in the shade then sweating like israelite in a thrift store in the sun. Lots of well-known schools there, including an art school in case you're interested in tongue-punching the fart box of some "free-spirited" broad "trying to find herself." Parking is some baby-back bullshit so maybe consider taking the heel-toe express or the tram while there.

Chicago does have excellent public transport (the subways, anyway, the buses are usually late and full of poor smelly people) for an American city, so if you enjoy riding trains you're in for a treat.

Where to get the famous Chicago style pizza?

Can't say much about the dating scene there as I already had someone while living there. The northern part of the city is really nice. It's gentrified as frick, so you can go a while without seeing a Black person. It may seem expensive if you're coming from the sticks or a depressed Rust Belt town (I came from Buffalo) but for a city its size, costs are very manageable. I've since lived in Denver and Seattle, and the price difference between Chicago and my home town now seem really small.
For fun, hope you like being indoors or driving to Wisconsin. The whole area is flat and there are few places to go for anything outdoors. Food and drink there though are probably the best in the country, some of it even beats NYC. The variety was great too, especially if you like east European. At one of their grocery stores, they had entire sections dedicated to Russian, Polish, even Lithuanian food items. I could find Georgian and Croatian wines, the Soviet brand of Moscato (still made in Moldova) at the liquor stores.
You can also live pretty far out and commute into the city easily without a car. Public transportation is the one thing they did pretty well. It does sometimes allow the occasional nog to jump a turnstile and ruin someone's day up north.
Taxes there are ridiculous, almost as bad as New York, and nearly all of it has to go to some corrupt state worker pension system.

Giordano's. Some of the locals turn their noses up at it and have their own hole in the wall pizza place they prefer, but any first-time visitor is going to get it there.

No. Just no. You know how people say gun crime is so bad and there are so many black people in Chicago? Well looking for a date is far worse.

Every American city is terrible with no exceptions, but Chicago is marginally less terrible than American cities of similar size and density such as New York and Philadelphia.
