    >Is Lima overrated?
Yes, but that's not really the end of the world. Don't spend more than three or four days there, easy.
    >Tips and tricks for having a good time there?
Follow the Gringo Trail, its the usual route that ninety-nine percent of tourists do and its worth it
    >What're the tourist traps? What's unmissable?
See above, its touristy but its good
    >Best spots for nightlife?
The party hostels, the Peruvians aren't wanting to party with you
    >Best beaches?
Mancora, but don't bother going there honestly

Good country, good first country too. Don't overthink it, just do the tourist thing and if you feel like you can handle more then Bolivia is right there and a vastly more adventurous destintation.

how easy is it to score coke in lima?

I will share my connection, but keep it on the DL.
It is strictly online. State your arrival flight, how much you want, and how much you are willing to pay. They will meet you at arrivals. Super reliable.

    cusco or lima?

      >cusco or lima?
Better food in Lima (and maybe nightlife, idk)

But Cusco is a beautiful spot, with lots of very interesting sites within a days drive by a guide to see temples and the like.
Cusco also felt safe to walk around in, (stayed a short walk from Plaza de Armas de Cuzco) where as Lima seemed like a prime crime area, even right outside of the expensive Minafloris (cliff mall) area.

Do give yourself a half day at least if not a full day in Cusco to get used to the elevation (avoid alcohol and heavy food first 24 hours, enjoy the coco tea that most upscale hotels give you for free while staying there).

Salar du Uni is overrated unless maybe you are doing a motorsport or something.

I did the baked Guinea pig, not very good. I have since heard its better to get it as a stew.

As a white male tourist you get offered cocaine when you walk around in evening pretty casually.
Couple times in Cusco near plaza/church (lol), and even by cabbie/driver in lima.

Didn't take them up on it since thats not my drug. Stuck to tea and leaves instead.

Only saw Ayahuasca shaman places in Cusco though, which would have been my jam but my travel companions were not into it and its a long trip.

Is purchasing cocaine like that safe in peru? As in they're not going to sell you something cut with fertilizer or rat poison? And is it significantly cheaper than in the west?

Didn't use it there so idk.
Coco leaves are everywhere though as is tea.
Coco teas is just the right level of buzzed, and solves altitude sickness, so I just chugged that and enjoyed.

Considering its grown there I would assume its way cheaper and less like to be cut, but why take the risk vs leaves which you can clearly see are fresh, or tea, which you can get loose leaf or even in teabags pre packaged?

you have obviously never done coke if you think coca tea is in any way similar to cocaine hydrochloride
Also, in peru it’s legal to have to up to 2 grams of cocaine

There's no point, too close to the source. Worst case scenario they scam you.
              >is it cheaper
Yes, but not for you gringo,

Colombia medellin was extremely comfortable. However my experience was pretty shitty and shallow. I would say its not worth a tourist trip. I had a lot more fun with interesting experiences in bogota even if the place was a shithole.

Bus one hundred percent. Not only cost but the headache factor. Driving in Peru is hectic, gas stations are very hard to find at times and the busses are so good there's no reason to not use them.

      >the peruvians aren't wanting to party with you
why? assume I'm not some autistic, naive virgin, and that I also know spanish

Maybe if you speak fluent Spanish but even then I doubt it. tourists and Peruvians live in parallel-but-different worlds and everyone is fine with that arrangement.

      cusco or lima?

Just do both, three days Lima and a week Cusco is a pretty good way to spend a ten day trip.

        >Peruvians live in parallel-but-different worlds and everyone is fine with that arrangement.
I used to hang out with locals and they seemed to at the very least be fine with having me around. Ended up becoming friends with a few of them, but to be fair that would only happen with people that started by talking to me first.

I'd say go for it. I've done 2 week road trip through Peru last October, started in Lima with Toyota Corolla, without any experience of driving in that kind of traffic or roads.

Best thing is try to avoid Lima and other cities, since outside of cities it's much less crowded, in some places I've hardly seen any car for the whole day.
Roads are usually in bad condition, when driving over speedbumps you have to almost stop, otherwise they scratch the underside of car, when going into corner with bad visibility it is custom to honk to notify other drivers.
But the scenery is absolutely amazing everywhere you go.

      >pic related, few pics of roads taken from my car

Dont drive in peruvian cities, and never drive in peruvian cities at night.

Absolutely no one respects the signs if there are signs. In fact they don’t drive, they just honk.
All the cars in Lima have bulletproof windows.
Igot to Lima airport late at night and people on the highway were constantly chasing the taxi or throwing themselves in the middle of the road so we’d stop. The driver told us to hide our bags, nothing visible from the window.

I've been several times. Lima is stressful af, second only to Delhi as the noisiest/busiest/dirtiest/most shit traffic of anywhere I've ever been. Miraflores is nice, stay there and only go into the rest of the city for brief half-day trips to see specific things. Restaurants, culture stuff, history stuff, etc.

Sacred Valley/Machu Picchu is very worth a week. Take the Inca trail, it's like a 4-day hike and you need to be passably fit but it's awesome.

If you like jungle stuff I've also been to Tarapoto and I recommend it. Tons of unbelievably cool jungle day trips. The city itself is shockingly shitty but cheap. Aim for a "high priced" hotel (meaning like $75/day as opposed to like $25) so at least you can briefly escape the city funk somewhat. And eat some Juanes

How safe is the northern coast of Peru?
Seems like it only attracts surf tourists such as myself and I'm wondering if the effort to get there (plane + 8 bus ride + bringing 2 surfboards) would be worth it? Was considering a workaway as a place to stay and get familiar with the area. Particularly I am looking at going to Huanchaco.

Trujillo seems to be a shithole full of delinquency, but its a great place for tourism, i never go outside downtown
Visit mochica temples and the museums, chan chan, biggest mud city from an ancient civilization and go to huanchaco beach

My 10 day trip in 2019.
Went 7 days in Lima and 3 days trek in Nor Yauyos reserve.

Miraflores/barranco are the extremely rich neighboorhoods. Cleaner and safer than where I live in Canada. Around park Kennedy is where all the gringo ammenities are. Also you can walk to the beach, serious hill though.

I wen’t downtown/historic area one day to see museums and eat street food. I never returned, the beggars and shady people we’re a constant hastle. But i walked 25kms through the city without any problems. There are no-go places like the big mountain south and the callao area.

I really miss the food. 99% of the people I met were friendly.
