OP, before the pessimists come and ruin this thread let me tell you, as someone who lives close to SF and has been there a few dozen times, yes there are homeless people. just like in every other major metropolitan area. the city is great. don't leave expensive shit in your car though because there is a chance it'll get broken into.
the obvious touristy thing to do is go onto Pier 39, get some fish and chips (or whatever) and watch the seals.
also go to Alcatraz, it's worth it.
here's something off the beaten path, unsure if you're into this kind of thing though

Thanks man, I’ll make sure to check out Alcatraz. Any other off-the-beaten-path stuff to do in the city? Preferably in the Russian Hill/Nob Hill/Marina area

I live by Sutro, you should definitely visit that part of the city and hike to GGP or presidio/fort point area. The outdoorsy parks of SF are some of its best parts.

OP, I lived in SF for a long time (~16 years), and still love the place despite its problems. I moved away three years ago but go back to visit friends about once a year.

For affordable sushi, I like Warakubune, on Church Street near Market. It’s a sushi boats place, so it’s a little gimmicky, but the quality is good. There was another sushi place a block away that was also good for a few non-sushi dishes, but my friends tell me the pandemic killed it, sadly. This place is an easy walk from two or three neighborhoods worth checking out—the Lower Haight (I am biased in its favor because I own a home there), the Castro (best if you are gay or like attention of gay men, but the famous Castro Theatre puts on interesting films and other programs, or is at least worth looking at), and the Mission (historically Latino and hipster neighborhood, still has some of both of the above).

There’s also an unassuming little place in Cole Valley called Grandeho’s Kamekyo that’s very homey, and pretty cheap. Cole Valley is also a cute neighborhood to look around in, although there’s not much of it.

For expensive sushi, I love a place in the Financial District called Akiko’s; I used to get lunch there a lot when I worked nearby. But they’ve revamped their menu to do all seasonal omakase menus, and they’ll cost you.

I would actually strengthen the warning against leaving stuff in your car—smash and grabs are embarrassingly frequent. I second the Alcatraz recommendation; one of the few tourist traps in the city (along with North Beach and Chinatown) that are actually worth it.

Don't come here. Its an absolute shit hole but if you happen to stay at a Marriott I might run into you and help you out.

Stay away from downtown, that's where the bulk of the problem is. Matter of fact, stay away from everything east of Sutro Tower, that's what I do.
Watch the sun set behind Ocean Beach looking West, if it's clear it's pretty kino.
    Lands End Trail
    Presidio
    Golden Gate Park
Just walk in the Sunset District and buy some sushi someplace

Any restaurants in particular you like?

        >Kevin's Noodle House on Irving (Pho, always 100% Asians in there)
        >Mela has the best Indian food in the city imo (tho its in the heart of the Tenderloin)
        >El Farolito or Taqueria Cancun for famous Mission Burritos (then you can start beef with all the crusty Mission heads about whatever one you tried being the best)
        >Golden Boy pizza in North Beach (tho prob gonna be busy, always is)
        >China Live in Chinatown might be cool, lots of little vendors. Never been tho
        >901 Colombus Cafe has the cheapest pints in the city. Right next to the bottom of Lombard Street too. It was $1.50 a few years when I used to go there all the time, now I think its $2.50 or $3.50

Doesn’t have to be sushi btw

When I'm in the bay area I always try to get sushi and if you don't get sushi, any kind of chink food is excellent in SF. I've had better food from takeout places than most restaurants. Plus it's an affordable way to eat.

I went in 2017 and it was probably one of the best trips I've ever done. Here's some stuff I did. I love walking, but you can probably sub in some car trips:

    >in n out burger, musee mecanique on the Pier
    >Adult night at the exploratorium
    >went to the asian art museum, got food in china town, then checked out coit tower
    >walked through golden gate park to the ocean and saw these cool windmills. Also went to the Japanese tea garden
    >Anchor brewery tour with free beer at the end, then mexican food in the mission district (el farolito was really good)
    >walked across the golden gate bridge to sausalito
    >hiked in Muir woods
    >accidentally walked through the Tenderloin

Obviously a lot of touristy stuff but there's a reason people flock to those things. I was really lucky that Lyft was super cheap at the time so getting around the city was easy, this shouldn't be a problem since you have a car.

Hey OP, everything you want is in the Castro

    Coit tower
Drive across golden gate and bay bridge
    Zodiac killer crime scenes
Fisherman’s wharf (restaurants and tourist traps)
Alcatraz tour (best thing I’ve listed)
Giants baseball game (even if you don’t care for sports it’s in a nice location and they have good food think of it like an upscale carnival)

These are just my dumb opinions but SF can be very fun

I lived in SF for 16 months. Don't leave fricking anything in your car. They will smash the windows.

Definitely go across the the Golden Gate bridge and do Muir Woods.

The best views of the Golden Gate bridge are on the Marin County Side. Battery Spencer has the best view.

Take the Tiburon Ferry over to Angel Island and rent a bike. The bike trail is paved and has awesome views all the way around the loop.

+1 for Alcatraz and the Fisherman's Wharf. Go to the Musée Mécanique arcade.

Jijime was my favorite lunch place in the city. Korean fusion.

Tacolicious in the mission is fricking amazing. Best margaritas Ive had outside mexico.

I hated SF. Only thing it has going for it was it was slightly better than Oakland. Everything was extremely pretentious. Lavender Pumpkin Frappes and shit everywhere when you just want some frickin coffee. Everything at WalGreens is free. Homeless people sleep in hotels there. Check out UC Berkeley if you wanna people watch. Lots of dumb hipster liberals

the last (and only) time i was there, the first thing me and my family witnessed, after stepping out of the hotel in the morning, was a homeless guy taking a shit on the sidewalk.

Adding on to what other ones have recommended, I’d check out Japantown and right next to it is one of my favorite food spots in the Bay/SF, Daeho. Try to get there early as I’ve seen the line wrapped around the building. Report back if you end up eating there
