Singapore isn't a third world shithole you doofus, you ain't catching food poisoning unless you eat Peking Duck from China Town. Check out the IKEA hot dogs if you're so afraid or a hawker center if you're feeling brave.

just go everywhere and try all of it, food is one of the best things about singapore
even if you're not that keen on chinese/indian food there are plenty of other speciality food places to try
my recommendation would be to eat cheaply sometimes and splash out sometimes too

go to a hawker centre. If you are a food person theres lots of food videos on YouTube based in singapore. Its a major foodie hub. The city is extremely walkable and public transport is clean and efficient. Its very safe as well and everything is has english or is in english. If you can't "get into it" in Singapore you literally have no hope in asia.

    food items to try:

-chicken rice (please eat it with the chilli)
this is the national dish of Singapore, there are a few recommended joints woth long queues but honestly its hard to get a bad plate of chicken rice, even the cheapest places do it decently. Add on roasted pork for a sinful plate
-chilli crab/pepper crab (if you are willing to splurge)
    expensive fare, but nice
-laksa ( go to a good one)
rich coconut seafood soup noodles swimming with unami
    -traditional singapore breakfast
kaya toast, soft boiled eggs, local coffee
    -scissors cut curry rice
    slop on a plate
    -lor mee
    -bak chor mee
    -nasi lemak
    -roti prata/ murtabak
    -nonya kuehs
local snack desserts, sweet sticky rice and stuff
    -peranakan food
this is the OG of singapore food, before the arrival of immigrants in the 1900s
    -durian
    -various indian/ china dishes
big population of either party in singapore, if you aren't going to india or china its a good proxy

you can pretty much find any cuisine in singapore, but asian fare is the focus. Eat cheaply and don't afraid to get dirty. Splurge in a buffet or whatever if you want

There is an insane amount of great high quality food for low prices in Singapore. There's also a huge variety of food from all of Asia. It should be very easy for you to find something great.
Hawker centers are a great place to start. They're everywhere and have a wide selection of different stuff.

No need to worry about food poisoning.
    Frick I miss Singapore.

Any particular establishments or can you just walk into any place?

Depends what you're looking for but most hawker centers are just fine. Basic rule is: figure out what you want to eat and then find the stall with the longest line serving that food
Also if you have a packet of tissues on you, you can throw it on a table to reserve a seat for yourself if it's lunch rush for example

    What if I want ramen?

      Anonymous

theres great ramen. Its one of the most popular foreign dishes. There is japanese presence on the island, even a japanese high school..

i think the only cuisine you will struggle to find in singapore are things like eastern european/russia dishes. Not sure how authentic the "mexican food" here is as well. Cheese is expensive. Wine isn't cheap either.

You can get good quality of pretty much any Asian type of food there.
I will HIGHLY recommend you try laksa out if you want ramen though. Laksa is pretty much just as "Singapore" as the chili/peper crab, satay and kaya. You will get addicted if you like it though. It's amazing.

lmao. Singaporean here. I find it funny that tourists enjoy our food. Our national dish Hainanese chicken rice is a few pieces of chicken on a cup of oily rice with some cucumber. Not a fulfilling meal at all. Personally I wish we would eat more wheat and dairy, eggs meat and potatoes, like the northeast chinese and koreans who are like 180 cm tall these days.

Nothing's stopping you from buying more wheat, dairy, eggs, meat and potatoes. You should be able to afford it if you're from Singapore

      >I find it funny that tourists enjoy our food
You're probably a young ameriboo, our food is top tier. Try living in a white country for a while and you'll begin to miss it.
      >Our national dish Hainanese chicken rice is a few pieces of chicken on a cup of oily rice with some cucumber.
And a hamburger is just bread and meat. Way to oversimplify it dumbass.
      t. Also local

i live in east europe and the food here is literally what you describe, wheat and dairy, eggs meat and potatoes, and yet most of the locals really like asian food
also, it is scientifically proven that the height thing is genetics and the amount of protein you get until you reach 20 or so, so just make your kids get more protein instead of dreaming about potatoes and bread

What are some good places to get breakfast early in the morning or do they only up around 9-11am like Japan?

      Anonymous

Some hawkers sell breakfast but it's usually just some toast, a soft-boiled egg and a cup of coffee. Sometimes you can get bak ku teh as well
Other than that, McD or Wendy's breakfast

Im down for trying kaya toast, but if its not my cup of tea - then I would like to try something else besides franchise outlets.

you can get breakfast at nearby coffeeshops as early as 6am, + -

      the usual fare for selection
      >traditional singapore breakfast
      >nasi lemak
      >me rebus/ mee siam
      >fried beehoon/noodles, ingredients of your choice.
      >steamed buns
      >roti prata
      >bakeries

other usual dishes depends on the store, some open early, some open late.
There are 24 hour places as well.

        A currency's strength doesn't determine how good a country's economy is.
