Sleeping Supplement Megathread

What's your poison of choice to fall asleep on a longhaul flight?

Melatonin is not really strong enough.

Thailand pharmacy gave me trazodone which is literally an anti-depressant, calmed me down but im reading a lot of potential risks and side-effects online so would like something else.
Also gives you an erection, which was not ideal, sitting two seats from some girl.

I've been reading about Tylenol but it apparently increases the risk of alzheimers, aka destroys your brain.

Would like to stay away from benzo's etc. as I would probably abuse it.

Any tips? Herbal medicine? Research chemicals? OTC-medicine?

      This is a good choice

Is that really strong enough for a flight?

Yes, it can be very strong (and wonderfully strange)

      anti-histamines

      This works well too

Just close your eyes, why the frick do you have to be dependent on drugs even for fricking sleeping?

      >flight the following day
      >the night before it's always impossible for me to sleep
      >just lie on my bed, trying to keep my eyes closed
      >end up barely having sleep anyway
      >flight, transfer, etc
      >finally arrive at my accommodation
Don't know why but whenever I arrive at my destination, I get back all of my energy and just power through the rest of the day. Doesn't matter if I'm just walking through a city, jumping down waterfalls, or shipwreck diving.
The sleep that follows this second wind is always the best.

honestly agree. Sleeping is a skill you can learn to do

I've always taken a melatonin and a muscle relaxer (can buy hundreds for like 5$ in Mexico) and usually that helps turn me into a marshmallow. I did take half an Ambien coming back from New Zealand this year and idk if anything can beat that. I was in an aisle seat and still managed to sleep like seven hours.

Ambien is great so long as you don't wake up and don't abuse it

In addition to everything mentioned above, also try:
      -L-Theanine
      -Magnesium
      -Valerian
      -Chamomile
      -Hops extract
      -GABA

and if you're open minded, Delta wave binaural beats can help too

        >Just close your eyes, why the frick do you have to be dependent on drugs even for fricking sleeping?

Dunno, might have something to do with the fact that im hurling through the air at 20 thousand feet in a steel cage that moves all the time and makes too much noise to listen to anything without noise cancelling headphones.

Instead id like to pop a pill twice a year so I can teleport to the part where I've arrived at my destination, well rested.

Most people who post here are spergs with zero social skills. You come here and ask perfectly reasonable questions and get loads of those type of responses.

I try to schedule long flights like like that that take off late at night so I'm already tired from the day. I pop 15 mg of ambien and am out for a good 8 hours. Don't drink alcohol as it dehydrates the frick out of you and you wake up feeling like shit. Thats the best solution I've figured outside of business/first class.

I take mexican/colombian versions of ambien & lunesta (so benzos) that I stockpile when I visit those countries.

Fortunately I don't have an addictive personality. I also fly business class for my overseas travels, and most long flights I book just so happen to be scheduled for late evening/nighttime departure.

    >Arrive at airport and visit assorted lounges due to credit card status or biz-class ticket
    >Drink a little booze, sample a few bites
    >Board plane, receive complimentary pre-departure mimosa
    >Order a white wine to have with my meal. Eat up.
    >During the dessert portion, order a red wine and take my benzo pills
    >Get up to use the bathroom one last time, have seat converted to bed
    >Watch movie on my laptop (prefer it over the in-flight screen) while propped up with pillows and finishing the wine
    >Off to dreamland I go. No noise or turbulence can impact this level of deep sleep.

    >Get tapped on the shoulder
    >Informed we'll be landing in 2 hours (so slept for 8 to 9 hours), and if I'd like breakfast I must order it now
    >Enjoy a hearty breakfast and cappuccino
    >Land in whatever nightmare shithole where I can immediately begin cooming in prostitutes vigorously

I did think about the complimentary wine, but dunno if I wanna frick with benzo's etc as I might like it too much.

Regarding benzos, you can cut the pills in half and usually just a half-dose is effective. At least for me, since I've had like 4 wine beverages within the 3 hour window of taking those pills.

Use melatonin in conjunction with a pre adjusted sleep schedule, just pull a short night before power it through the day on caffine if you need, pop a melatonin capsule before boarding, done.

Nothing can help me. I'm not able to fall asleep when I'm sitting up. I just keep nodding off into thin air, even with sleeping pills.

If I can lie down, the best is zopiclone. I can even fall asleep on my back with that, and that was very useful when I had a gash on my face and didn't want to sleep on it.

Zolpidem, AKA ambien, is dangerous. If you're awake too longer after taking it, it'll cause uninhibited behavior and memory loss. You might feel so good that you redose. I quit once I realized I had somehow gone three days without eating. I've never experienced that with zopiclone.

Ambien rules. Get used to it at home if u think you cant handle urself. Nothing works better tbough.

I've never been able to fall asleep sitting up in my entire life.

That being said, for regular sleepiness, I've found magnesium glycinate is pretty good. Perhaps give that a try? I don't think there could be any downsides, since it's easy on the stomach compared to other forms of magnesium.

Dude the war on drugs propaganda has done a number on your brain. Your liver isn't going to fall out of your body because you took a Tylenol once.

Trazadone is what my ex gf would take, she was a nervous flyer, it puts you to sleep and reduces your anxiety. It's perfect.

You can up your melatonin dose, or combine it with benadryl. Every middle class white woman takes Xanax. Drinking is better for short flights than long ones.

"Natural" doesn't mean anything. It's just a word co-opted like "organic", used by drug companies used to sell low dose placebos with prettier packaging for more money

    > Thailand pharmacy gave me trazodone which is literally an anti-depressant
I take trazodone for depression and anxiety. It’s not really a sleeping pill; although it has been used off-label for insomnia, there are much more effective drugs for that.
    >I've been reading about Tylenol but it apparently increases the risk of alzheimers, aka destroys your brain.
I assume you mean Tylenol PM (which I believe contains diphenhydramine, an antihistamine that is also the active ingredient in most OTC sleep aids)? I would be more worried in that case about using acetaminophen (AKA paracetamol, the Tylenol part of the Tylenol) when you don’t need it. Very hard on the liver, really shouldn’t be combined with alcohol. Pure diphenhydramine without the Tylenol (Benadryl, Sominex, Zzzzquil) in combination with a bit of alcohol is very effective for passing out, although alcohol reduces sleep quality. I guess there are a few studies suggesting that diphenhydramine might increase the risk for dementia, but I believe it requires heavy use over an extended period and isn’t a 100% certain connection. If it’s the paracetamol that is bad for your brain this is the first I have heard it.

Personally, on the rare occasions when I have used a non-benzo sleep aid (Valium and a glass of wine are also a guaranteed knockout), I have just used Benadryl. It works. I don’t use any alcohol anymore, so I know that it needn’t be combined with booze to make you sleepy. And my opinion is that the risk of brain degradation for an occasional user is pretty slim even if it is real.

Regarding bento abuse, trust your instincts on that front. I know that some of them can be surprisingly addictive, with ugly psychological and physical withdrawals—a friend of mine just went through many weeks of hellish symptoms getting off of a short period of taking abusive levels of Klonopin. So if you are inclined to overuse you’re being smart by steering clear.

Melatonin will not even work if the reason you can't sleep is stress / fear / anxiety. I'm not at all a druggie, but when I lived in Thailand, I used to buy valium 3 times a year when I had to sit through a cramped mini van ride for 15-20 hours. Made my nerves calm and I slept through a lot of it. You can buy it OTC in Thailand, but just buy 1 or 2 if you don't trust yourself with benzos.

you guys seriously gotta learn to sleep on command. I mean, do the thing where you contract all muscles then relax them, or listen to some rain sounds, kick back in the emergency door section, whatever you have to do. Being someone who usually needs more sleep than normal I usually compensate by being able to just switch myself off, but it wasnt easy at first and is definitely an acquired skill. At least in my country it'd be pretty darn difficult to get benzos or zolpidem (ambien) prescribed, and melatonin simply doesnt do it for me. It definitely is a very useful skill for regular travelers or commuters.

there's also the sheer excitation associated with travel that can make you all jumpy jumpy I guess.

One thing you could do (and I do sometimes) is tire yourself by hitting the gym the day before.

if anything, I find a simple glass of whatever spirit of choice is served on the plane helps a lot, and won't do much in the way of dehydration anf hangovers, especially if consumed before lunch as an apéritif.
