So how dangerous really is Cancun and other resorts in Mexico? I read an article where another Canadian and Argentinian were killed nearby.

Do you like have to stay on the hotel grounds to be reasonably safe?

It's rare to hear about violence against tourists around the resort areas. I've gone twice, once to stay at the Hard Rock and another at the Marriott (they're right next to each other). I've gone out and about many many times without seeing or experiencing a single crime. Just don't be fricking stupid and go down dark paths or somewhere that obviously isn't meant for tourists.

Just stay at a major resort. If you go somewhere have the resort arrange transportation.

is true. Just be mindful of others. The city is very safe, you're more likely to get shot walking around in Detroit.

Rule of thumb, if someone says this, never go there.

My guess would be cartels fighting for territory.

Because every 'wanna be white boi gangsta' who goes down there wants to prove how much a badass they are from time to time. They either frick with the cartel, with someone who's lost it all and gives no shits, or just is plain stupid.

99% of cancun is save, it gets dangerous when you start trying to do your own thing and flash money all the time.

Mafias own the hotels so of course they don't want anything to happen to the tourists. Don't be surprised if you see men with assault weapons posted at the entrance, they are there to protect you. If you go down town you may see some dangerous places and a lot of homeless so just avoid sketchy streets and don't be an butthole to people.

    Go to Cancun
Hotel rep tells people not to be buying drugs in the clubs, you will get fricked up in more ways than one
English Chav from hotel ends up buying drugs, gets really fricked up, basically OD's in a club
We heard from his friends a few days later he was in hospital and alive, and when he came to, the cops where waiting there with a huge fine (bribe) he was being forced to pay or else going to jail for a few weeks.

Stayed in the city, not in the zona hotelera
Got sloppy drunk multiple times, walked through the entire city at 3am
Cops are corrupt, don't look for trouble, don't wear expensive shit around
    You'll be fine

A lot of the drug money in Mexico is invested into hotels and resort areas. So the cartels have an incentive to keep tourism areas free of violence. There used to be a little violence between rival cartels in the area but it's not important territory related to drug trafficking or drug manufacturing, so the violence is at a very low level compared to the US/Mexico border area.

Of course you can still get knocked out by some local dipshit or another drunk tourist if you talk shit, but it's like that in most resort areas

Also it's important to keep in mind that some US Senators are now talking about labeling Mexican cartels as terrorist organizations, which means the gloves would be off. That would be really bad for business so the last thing the cartels want is to give the Americans a reason to do that, which means they order their underlings to stay away from Americans or anyone who looks American.

There was a case in Matamoros a few weeks ago where 2 Americans were accidentally killed because they were mistaken for rival cartel members. The leadership of the Gulf Cartel responded by dumping the 5 responsible men in the middle of the street, with their hands and feet tied, and an apology letter stating that they would make sure such an act of insubordination would not happen again
