My friend from Kenya said that Nairobi is pretty cool, and since I'm a white dude it would be decently safe for me. Some of the restaurants and clubs that she showed me looked fancier than any I've been to in the states, but then again I don't spend a lot of money on going out

South Africa, Kenya, Botswana, Ghana are all relatively easy. If you don't require sub-Saharan then Morocco.

Morocco is unique in that it's cheap, safe, visa-free, has good tourist infrastructure, good backpacker/expat scene, excellent public transport. Other African countries tick some of these boxes, but none tick all of them.
Ghana is often listed as a good 'beginner' country, but nobody ever mentions how much a pain in the ass the tourist visa is. I wouldn't even stoop to giving those bureaucrats my money. Senegal is visa-free for most Westerners and is just as safe and interesting as Ghana.

Nobody gives a frick. I've been visiting Imlil regularly since 2010; that's the place where it happened. It's a touristy, snow-bound mountain town like any other. It gets thousands of tourists every year. If 2 people were murdered in, say, Zermatt, would that make Switzerland a terrorist hotbed in your opinion?
2 terrorism-related deaths in the past 20 years makes Morocco orders of magnitude safer than England, France or Germany.

I'll try to charitably explain to you why your worries are unfounded.
            >Terrorism
Is usually perpetrated by mentally ill schizos. If Tarrant were an Arab, he'd have shot up a church. It's an unavoidable thing and a statistical reality in every country of the world, because of the simple fact that anyone that doesn't care about consequences can kill a whole lot of people before being apprehended or prevented from acting.
Most criminals and robbers seriously avoid dealing with tourists because countries like Morocco rely heavily on them and are authoritarians, meaning anything impacting their bottom line becomes a threat to its sovereignty, which makes them very tough on these kind of crimes.

You have to stop worrying about single issues and be biased about them and rather look at the numbers. Morocco has a lower murder rate than Belgium, New Zealand, or Canada.

Another thing is, even in places with high murder rates, it usually happens because 1) you're embroiled in crime yourself or 2) you went into the wrong neighborhood. Two things you should never do, no matter the country. The murder you guys keep mentioning (as if we didn't have a dozen fricking school shootings in the US since then) happened away from the beating path, at night, where nobody could've witnessed the scene taking place.

If you're a woman walking in the bad parts of the Bronx past midnight and you get mugged, i'm not going to shun the US or NYC for it.

So basically don't go nowhere because in every country you can probably trace at least one tourist murder in the last few years ? lmao

Pakistan is the best travel experience I ever had. Stayed for two months, went to Balochistan (had to sneak past checkpoints in the desert), went to beautiful waterfalls at Charo Machi with locals, went as close as I could to k2

A universal trait of people from 3rd world countries is that they always disparage where they come from, tell you not to go there and what a shitty place it is. Pakistanis are the only exception to this in my experience, they're proud and excited about the idea of people visiting their country. I hitchhiked a little in the gulf states and it was always the Pakis who picked me up, refused money, offered me hospitality.

                I went last year.
The people there told me that they wanted Pakistan to be represented well, and that it is an honour to have guests. Not kidding but the Pashtuns especially take their hospitality extremely seriously.
I had taxis actually refuse to take my money because I was a guest in their country.
This all changes up North though, people are greedy because tourism is somewhat alive up there near the mountains.
Don't trust anyone's opinion on Pakistan unless they have been and left the main tourist spots.

If you go to Pakistan you will be treated EXTREMELY well. It is a hidden gem as far as solo backpacking tourism is concerned. Not many people can look past the "danger" aspect.

I have bookmarked this thread and will answer any more questions people might have.

How did you get to Quetta?
Apparently as of March 2022 it's virtually impossible to travel there as a foreigner cause you need permission and police escort, which is just stupid.

Shame really, I would so much love to go to Pakistan, but I can't travel most of the places where I would like (Quetta, Hingol, Darra Adam Khel, Nagarparkar, some eastern parts of Balochistan).

I left from Karachi, took a taxi to bring me to the highway entrance. From there I hitchhiked into Balochistan, and first stopped by Hingol. Our truck driver however revealed I was a foreigner and I got detained. After a day of arguing, they let me hitch a truck back to Karachi instead of a mandatory armed escort out of Balochistan. So I got on the truck, and after driving an hour or two I told them to drop me off in the middle of the desert, a few miles from the next checkpoint that leads to Khuzdar. I crossed the desert to pass that checkpoint and then started hitchhiking a few miles from it. The thorn bushes and scorching sun made it pretty challenging. Used every drop of water I had.
The police passing when I started hitching a ride didn't recognise my disguise, I also hid my bags from view while hitchhiking since backpacks give away you are a foreigner. Hitchhiking in Balochistan takes way, way longer than the rest of the country.
I found a trucker that brought me all the way to Khuzdar. Try to limit the amount of rides you need to get, trucks are best since they let you pass checkpoints much more easily since officers just want to let them go through quickly.
From Khuzdar I got into a cramped taxi to Quetta. It was the most horrifically uncomfortable ride of my life. We got stopped for two inspections and the officers never recognised me as foreign, despite having pale white skin and light coloured eyes. If they don't expect to find a foreigner, they will usually not see you, provided you have convincing local clothing on.
From Quetta I eventually hitchhiked back to Islamabad, I got caught on the way out but the levies eventually let me go since I was leaving anyway and going to Balochistan is a grey area right now.

Anyway, you don't need permission nor a police escort, I am proof of that. But you have to be willing to try. I posted an entire AMA on /misc/ once if you want to read through it.

So in Peshawar there is a gun market you might like to check out, but you can't be caught so again disguises are necessary. First thing you should do landing in Pakistan is buy local clothing and blend in. Western clothing however is good if you want to be noticed and you'll get rides very quickly if hitchhiking.

Up North Skardu and Gilgit are beautiful, going to little Tibet is easy and safe.
In Multan, which you'll need someone to practically smuggle you into, there are a couple of shrines that are very cool. A very nice man brought me there and even argued with the people at the desk because they questioned the lack of security.
Karachi has more interested history than Islamabad for obvious reasons, it has a cool beach, the palace, mausoleum, so definitely worth a couple of days.
Bolan pass is dangerous but viable and I highly recommend Ziarat as well, it was like the Yosemite of Pakistan. I can see why Jinnah chose to live his final days there.

Here are two threads I made with more information on this.

                Some general tips:
                1. Try to get the three month visa, but they'll most like give you one month. You can easily overstay this, look up the penalties and see what you are willing to pay as a fine. Get an exit visa online and pay the fine. You can risk leaving the country without it since I hear they sometimes don't ask, but this country is all over the place with rules and no one really knows how anything works. Hell, you could probably just leave by going through Iran, China or Afghanistan without a big fuss, which is my guess. Keep in mind you need a physical visa to enter India from Pakistan, something I can almost guarantee you won't get from the embassy there so don't even bother, seen two rejections already that took months to get.
                2. Get a disguise, local clothing.
                3. Prepare yourself for utter filth and a way of sterilising water.
                4. Bring medicine and first aid.
                5. Data is cheap, you can get a huge packet to last you the month but it expires if you overstay your visa. Try to convince a local to get one for you if you plan to overstay.
                6. Locals are extremely hospitable and you will be stared at a lot. Be wary of bullshitters.
                7. Be prepared to constantly be sick and get food poisoning. I almost never had a solid stool and lost a lot of weight. Be warned.

All in all, I had a good time there and one day I will return.

Good friend of mine lived and worked in Khartoum for years before relocating to Juba (South Sudan) and then Nairobi; he still goes back frequently. It’s almost entirely safe from things like banditry or mugging and suchlike, but restive areas in South Kordofan (Nuba Mountains) and to a lesser extent nowadays Darfur are best approached with caution and local friends. My friend actually works in South Kordofan and enjoys it, but he’s extremely well-connected locally. And there’s some risk of political unrest in Khartoum/Omdurman, but foreigners aren’t targets and it’s possible to stay the hell out of the way if stuff like that hits the fan. There is no tourist infrastructure to speak of but people are generally very hospitable. Some dislike or are suspicious of Americans, but most are not.

    Botswana is great.
Most liberating part is the combination of few tourists and relatively well off locals means there is no tourist scamming industry.
In the three weeks I was there I got approached by beggars and trinket sellers maybe 3-4 times (and they were not aggressive at all).

Also police are professionals, my friend got a speeding ticket when it was his turn to drive. Police guy showed the table for how tickets are calculated, we paid with card, signed the ticket in triplicates (one for the police department, one for the finance department and one for us). Pretty much as pleasant as getting a speeding ticket could be.

Safari around the okavango delta in the north is the biggest tourist draw.
But there is a cave system in the west that they've recently opened for tourists, but I didn't have a chance to go there.
Also Victoria falls is about an hour from the border into Zambia or Zimbabwe.

What was your budget for the trip?

I think I ended up spending just under $2000. Botswana is expensive for Africa.
The most expensive thing was car rental, they are like $300 per day.
We split it only two ways but there is room for four.
But they come fully equipped: tents on the roof that are super easy and quick to set up and break down. Satellite phone, cooking equipment w/ gas, tire repair kits, etc
You can drive them around the national parks from dawn till dusk (0630 to 1730), camping spots in the most popular parks have to be booked far in advance.
There are also guided tours, including crazy expensive luxury options with drivers, chefs and so on. We took a cheap one where a local kid took us out in a mokoro (a flat bottom canoe for the shallow delta) and showed us around on foot, where we had to bring and prepare our own food and a rented tent.

The actual most popular way to "visit" Botswana is to fly directly to Maun from SA, do some guided tours and then fly back out but I don't like that type of traveling.
We drove around half the country, took the night train, the night bus, made friends with locals who showed us some nightclubs, and could walk around day or night and just spontaneously check out whatever restaurants or shops while feeling safe and at ease.
The most dangerous thing is the traffic, even though my friend got a speeding ticket we later learned from locals that traffic cops are only on the job until like 1700-1800, after that its free for all.
We kept our driving mostly to daylight hours, not only because of traffic but also because there are a ton of animals on the roads: cows, donkeys, giraffes, elephants.

If you want to do safari in Africa and you don't want to do "dark tourism" and negotiate with local warlords for safe passage, nor only be in gated tourist ghettos then Botswana is the place.

Interesting. Isn't it dangerous to camp in the African bush though, what about lions, leopards, hippos and so on? Also, 2k for 3 weeks doesn't shock me, sounds like a good deal.

You camp at designated camping spots (that have to be booked in advance)
Apparently most animals see tents as solid objects.

But having the tent on the roof of a car felt better.
Just follow the advice of the camp rangers and guides.

My brother did an Africa trip. Judging by pics they shared and stuff they talked about it seems Kenya and Namibia are pretty great places.

I've been to Morocco, Senegal, and Guinea, and I liked all three a lot. Keep in mind, North Africa, East Africa, West Africa, and Southern Africa all have very different cultures.

First notable thing about North Africa is that they're actually Arab countries, not black. Morocco's probably the most advanced, but the whole country feels very touristy. Great food, beautiful women, but be wary of pick pockets and scammers.

Everybody I know who's been to Egypt loves it, but it's one of the most Salafist countries.

I liked West Africa a lot, it was very festive, though note that African-Americans are the most closely related to West Africans.

East Africa seems amazing, I want to see it. Ethiopia has great food and some of the most beautiful women on Earth. Kenya is supposed to be cool, and Tanzania has safari/tourist stuff.

tbqh I have no interest in going to Southern or Central Africa. Lots of shitholes, crime, and killings. Maybe I'm just being ignorant.

Based on where I've been, I'd recommend Morocco for a week. I wouldn't go out of my way for Senegal and Guinea, but if you wind up there, you can have an amazing time.

Of places I want to go, Ethiopia is #1.

For women, Morocco and Ethiopia are tops. Coincidentally, for food those are also my top picks.

South Africa has shitholes, crime and killings but also some very nice scenery, especially along the coast and the national parks.

I had a wonderful experience with a Kenyan safari… saw the wildlife greatest hits and then some, lots of great nature. Some of my snapshots could have been National Geographic photos. I also had a nice time on the little island of Lamu, kind of a micro-Zanzibar, although there have been a small number of murderous incursions there over the years by seafaring Somali bandits pretending to be Islamists (it’s close to the Somali border).

Tourist infrastructure is good, people are sincerely friendly. My Kenyan friends are only half-joking when they call the capital Nairobbery; it is indeed a great place to get mugged if you are stupid/careless, and there are slums one shouldn’t visit without a local guide, but Nairobi also has some great food and nightlife options and you’re not likely to get murdered, just robbed. Perhaps obviously, that didn’t happen to me, but I was being driven around by locals rather than walking around alone at night, and staying in a fancy hotel (I have heard of people having things taken from their luggage in cheap places along River Road, which is slowly gentrifying and extremely lively but still mostly sketchy).

A lot of these backpacking stories are from dipshits that go to a third world country, realize it's not as bad as they were told, and then drop all satety precautions whatsoever. Keep your wits about you and you will be fine. There are stories about roastie tourists getting butchered on tinder dates in NZ.

South Africa is perfectly fine, safer than most of the other countries, don't listen to poltards trying to make it sound as if whites are being hunted there.

Not true, don't listen to this moron. South Africa is more dangerous than some warzones. I don't know a single person who hasn't been robbed or had their house/car broken into here. Cops don't and won't do shit. To say it's safer here than most other countries here is such a delusional thing to say.

The board is full of contrarian homosexuals lately. You could say the sky is blue and some loser would come out of the woodwork calling you a poltard and an incel.

The contrarian homosexuals are the people who think they will get mugged, robbed or killed the second they set foot in South Africa, spend a month there in Cape Town, mossel bay, east London and some national parks no problem.
SA had a ton of tourists before corona.

SighSee is particularly wary of South Africa because we all have this uneasy idea that it's a land where the gollywogs are encroaching on the rights and property of a shrinking bastion on white civilization, and nothing frightens /misc/tards more.
Besides that anywhere with big slums is looked at askance; besides my first point I don't think anyone really thinks SA is worse than Brazil or India.
Finally, it doesn't help that the only South African media 99% of us have been exposed to is District 9, Trevor Noah's autobiography, and Die Antwoord music videos. None of those paints a flattering portrait.

i think its fair to say that in a big chunk of africa, being white absolutely affords you a certain amount of respect and consideration
touristy scamming aside, outside of literal warzones, nogs will NOT seriously harm a muzungu, period.
this is not the case in south africa
