South East Peru travel

Hey sighsee
I've been floating the idea of travelling to Peru for the first time. Specifically the South-East region near Lake Titicaca. I've never been to South America and wanted to see if any fellow travellers have any experience in visiting this area.

Any stories, tips, and advice is apprieciated!

The roads to Puno and Titicaca river are closed
I dont recommend to go there until the crisis over there ends

So their political crisis is going on country wide? I assumed it was just places like Lima and Cusco that were more or less off limits. Any idea when this whole thing blows over?

Machu Picchu reopened 10ish days ago so things are already abating. You should be prepared for flareups and closures though if you're going imminently.

Are you planning on going to Peru and just going to Lake Titicaca? If so, what's the appeal? It's probably the biggest letdown in southern Peru.

fuck no, I loved the Titicaca area. for me the Colca Valley was more disappointing (excluding the Condors)

I’m not interested in going to Machu Picchu. Places in general don’t take alot to impress me, I’m more fascinated with the higher altitudes in the area.

          >I've never been to South America and wanted to see if any fellow travellers have any experience in visiting this area.
Traveling through the Andes is tough. If you aren't comfortable with high altitude then I wouldn't recommend.

The protests are calming down already so I would say one month

Perhaps I’ll wait until the end of the year, the only area I’m interested in the Andes is to visit La Rinconada. I know there isn’t really much to see, however Its something on my bucket list to do.

If anybody has been up there any advice is apprieciated too.

There's a lot to see on the Andes, but sadly the best places are the "hidden" ones.

The mention of the reopening of Machu Picchu wasn't a suggestion to go to Machu Picchu. It was an indication of the direction things are moving in in the country for tourists.

If it doesn't take much to impress you then you'll be fine at Titicaca.

My bad, thanks for the clarification. You’ve been to Titicaca? How was your experience?

                No worries.

A couples of years ago, yes. It was okay. Spent a day out on the lake and went over to the Llachon peninsula. Don't get me wrong, the scenery is beautiful but going all the way to Peru for just that lake when you've got places like the Sacred Valley and the area around Huaraz for high altitude fun is a head scratcher.

Huaraz does look beautiful. I guess I haven't fully planned all the trip out. Still figuring out the schedule and such, I'll definitely check out more about those places.

            >Any places you recommend checking out there in Titicaca?
the typical ones: Uros Islands, Amantani, Taquile
            also check Sillustani, Inca Uyo

nut mostly it's the lake and the indigenous culture. I also kinda felt like home in Amantani. It felt very mediterranean at some moments. Also went to a party and had a blast. It was aimed to tourists but there were also natives. I didn't care, got wasted and interacted to natives.

I also went to the bolivian side and generally they say it's cooler but I liked the peruvian side much better.

As the other anon said the sacred valley and cuzco are also really worth it and if you have enough time you can also throw an amazon visit

              >if you have enough time
That would be my biggest issue, because I really don’t have weeks like some travellers do. I’m pretty busy most of the year.

Hearing all these other cool places makes me want to see if I can branch my trip out a bit more. Budget wise I’m comfortable, however I don’t want to spend a crazy amount of money either.

Any tips on saving money? I don’t think it would be much of an issue knowing these countries are cheaper to begin with.

Bald and Backpacker Ben are doing videos of Peru right now, it’s been good. Looks like a lovely 3rd world visit.

Looks pretty cool, although iquitos is way out of my trip plans, perhaps something to keep in mind another time.

Hijacking this thread. I'm going to Arequipa soon (flying out of the US on the 28th and arriving there on the 1st). What am I in for? I saw Machu Picchu reopened so that should be good news, right? What are the odds someone tries to rob me and how do I minimize said odds?

Bumping for same question as well, I’m not white so that helps right? I suppose don’t dress super nice too.

Also still bumping the question if anyone has gone to la rinconada. About getting the ride up there and if it would be easy finding a native to go with for safety.

Is May a good time to visit Peru or is October better?

How can you book a flight and not know what you're in for?

It's a nice enough place, picturesque. Some beautiful historic buildings. A very nice old convent. There's also the Vargas Llosa library. And there's the volcano.

Might get boring after a few days though.

I see Macchu Picchu is open again.
Im thinking of going in early June just before tourist season starts. Hoping that all the protests and shit will die down before then.

One thread mentioned that one area in peru has something called takanakuy where the village fights on Christmas. That sounds pretty fun ngl
