Is it really as violent and lawless down there as I'm reading about?

Downtown yeah pretty much. But there are lots of nice areas too (at least fun, relatively safe I mean)

I'm going to the baseball games. I've been before and never really had a problem but from what I'm seeing is it has gotten exponentially worse (without getting into /misc/) this year for some reason.

Right, for that 'reason' we'd better leave unsaid...

Keep in mind St L is literally the most dangerous city ON EARTH. That's right, more dangerous than Mogadishu or San Salvador. BUT... IT can still be safe 🙂 Here's how:

You have a weekend in St L and the Cards are in town okay... easy:

        Things you should do:
        >Baseball game (Don't forget ballpark village after the game!)
        >Awe before the Arch!
        > Take in the beauty of one of the largest mosaic collections in the western hemisphere inside the spectacular Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis or see the historic Old Cathedral and St. Ferdinand Shrine, both constructed in the early 19th century with ties to the oldest Catholic congregation in St. Louis.
        >Explore 79 acres of lush gardens, landscape architecture, greenhouses and conservatories at the oldest botanical garden in the United States.
        >Lunch at Forest Park boathouse

It's not the most dangerous city on earth, but it's definitely one of the most dangerous cities in the USA.

I'll probably be spending most of my time between Busch, BVP and the casino downtown. I've already been up in the arch on a previous trip.

I've been to STL several times for games (even by myself) but i was mainly trying to find out if the violence downtown is being over exaggerated or if my chances of being caught in a scholastic gun battle are higher than usual.

As someone who visits semi-frequently I'd say you're fine. But would be interested for someone who actually lives there to weigh in. I'm considering moving there and trying to gauge the reality as well

I'm pretty sure there will be a decent police presence for a couple hours after the game. But you can feel it in the air when the crowd downtown starts to change.

If they start shooting and mugging Cardinals fans nobody will go downtown anymore.

I've lived here all my life, the only reason I haven't left is because lack of money, my advice is stay away, it's an absolute shit hole.

Yeah but I want to scoop a historic mansion on Portland Pl or similar for (relative) bargain-bin prices

                >inb4 'there's a reason for the price'
fair enough, but Im unconvinced anywhere in the US is really better

Downtown St. Louis has been under some type of curse for a century. For a rural guy like me that lived in the midwest all my life, it's weird. The place would be cool if it didn't draw so much negativity into it.

I’m going there a second time in a couple of weeks. Last time I was there I felt safe.My friend that lives there just says to stay away from east St. Louis. Otherwise had fun seeing the arch, going through that Italian neighborhood, and exploring that huge park.

Don't cross the bridge into East St Louis, the already bad Black personification ramps up exponentially

Downtown is fine. It’s the north and east parts of STL that are dodgy.
