Will I struggle getting a job teaching English in China if I don't look stereotypically "white"? For reference, I'm half-Chinese, half-German, but other people sometimes tell me I don't really look white. Most commonly people tell me I look mixed, but also that I look Latino or Pacific Islander. Other than that, I'm from a native English speaking country, well-spoken, degree from a prestigious university. Will this hurt my chances at getting hired? I heard that racism is a real issue.

In general your odds of finding a job in China are much higher if you're half-Chinese and can speak the language, however, for teaching English it's somewhat of a disadvantage since schools and parents prefer someone who looks the part, i.e. stereotypical white European.

Did you get interviews? Or straight-up rejected?
I got rejected first two years and an interview this year. I realised my SOP wasn't that good. It was fine but not the best I could write. I rewrote it 5 times, had current JETs look at it and edit it and that landed me an interview.

The biggest myth I've seen shilled on SighSee is that JET is easy to get on. It really isn't. It's really competitive, since it's a cushy decently paid job where you get to spend time hanging out in Japan for a few years. Yes, most JETs are weirdos, but they are educated and work hard on their applications. Some go to university with a degree specifically to get on the JET programme.

If you are serious about getting on, start working now. Start taking Japanese classes, do a TEFL, Anything that shows your interest in Japanese culture and ability to Teach.

It extremely competitive here in my country. Doesnt help that I have an education and employment gap. Or maybe I just suck ass in writing a good SoP.

every person I ever saw get on JET in the last 7 years very obviously sperged about how much they love japan and how much they've loved anime their whole life. they all were very far left leaning as well. JET has been infiltrated by left leaning weebs who are the ones who conduct the interviews. many of the women i've met b***hed about how LE WIMMINZ were treated in japan. some even said they got PTSD from living there LOL.

Its different here as far as I can tell. Most people who get into JET from the Philippines have really good qualifications (teacher+teaching experience of more than 2+ years). Funnily enough thats what other recruitment agency also requires for any teaching position. I have a shit resume because I was a NEET for a handful of years and now Im 35 years old.
Sure, you can say that Filipinos are oversaturating the industry but most of them actually like teaching and are serious compared to the stories I keep seeing about some guy just going to JET to get a cushy job and do nothing. This is all anecdotal btw. Of course some of the Filipinos do bring down the wages becaude they'll accept shit pay. Saw a friend post an email from Heart JP (?) Which was already blacklisted by the government here because of shady shit.

Bumping this thread because there doesn’t seem to be a TEFL General at the moment. I’m sure this is a long shot, but I’m curious to find out if anyone’s done an MA TESOL or MA in Applied Linguistics with a TESOL focus either online or primarily online, and what they have to say about their program and experience.

I’m already teaching at private language schools, and I have two vaguely impressive, almost relevant degrees, but I want to get out of private language school settings and into real schools.

Presently living in small-town Europe, so there’s no relevant training available locally, but my goal is to move into international school work here. If I ever relocate back to the States my goal would be to teach in high school or community college settings.

So I’m curious to hear if anyone’s ever actually done a teaching-relevant postgraduate degree.

I’m not interested in CELTA or other certificates; I’m already working and looking to expand my options beyond those that these certs would open to me.

      Anonymous

You should look into getting a CELTA as well if you want to work in certain countries. I have an MA in Applied Linguistics but had to have my CELTA to get a work permit

        Anonymous

I’ll keep it in mind, but I’m not looking at relocating at the moment, and already have permission to work where I am now. What country required you to get a CELTA to get the work permit? It’s the first I’ve heard of a country asking for it; I’ve only ever heard of the countries requiring degrees, with certificates just being requested by specific employers rather than immigration authorities.

Where did you do your MA, and do you recommend your program?

Hey OP, am also half and half

I was making 200-400rmb an hour in Beijing 2015-2017 as a full-time student. However that was mainly through private lessons, working under the table at a tutoring center, etc..

Basically I'd get a part-time job, work at it for a bit, guanxi with parents, and cut out the middleman. Turn those 150/hr tutoring jobs into 300. Parents and students were fine with my 'racial ambiguity'.

The only time I felt slighted was getting hired for a high school speech course. The pay was good at 500rmb/hr pathed up to a work visa, and too good to be true. Right as classes started the coordinator dropped me from 5 classes to 1 and told me I'd be a substitute teacher. They told me I shouldn't have gotten the job on paper (Chinese last name) but was handsome enough to make it work. Some jobs aren't worth taking

I don't know how flexible the situation is with Student Visa's nowadays but basically everyone I knew who studied hard in China was working on the side. I knew this Bangladeshi guy with a London accent who taught over Wechat. 2 hours a night at 300rmb/hr teaching people barely able to string a sentence together.

At one point I also did apply for a formal workvisa / classroom monkey job, but you have to fight for every bit and piece of your contract. It's always a headache with contracts.

Already spending too much time on this OP, but tldr Parents and Students like mixed-race, schools and companies will use it to bargain against you.

Anyway that's my experiences OP, best of luck

Nah, your experience should count for something. My suggestion is to go beyond applying for TEFL jobs (which tend to have strict, even if low, entry bars) and apply for jobs at international schools teaching subjects or grade levels. I got such a job by applying for something I saw on ESLCafe, and many of my fellow teachers were from all around the world - Kazakhs, Lebanese, French, etc. The commonality was being fluent in English.
Mind you, the school was in a country going through something of a civil war, but I used that experience as a springboard for other international schools, despite never having been a licensed teacher or having an education degree.

If you go there physically, in person, it will help. In america and the anglosphere, for whatever reason, there has been a huge shift, and now people don't want you to apply in person, they just want you to do it online. But this is not so popular outside of the anglosphere. In other european countries, and in china, going somewhere in person is always going to help. If you want to get a job in china, you will need to be there, in person, to show them that you are fluent in english, and that you are well mannered, etc. Since you have a good degree, and you are fluent in english, and you are half white, you will almost be guaranteed a job if you go to china, or taiwan, which actually would be a more friendly and easier place for you to get a TEFL job than china. You just have to do it. You have to go there and start talking to people

I met many English teachers in China that weren't white - they were South Asian, black, Latino, etc. They all had Angle passports and were native English speakers. There is some discussion in Chinese TEFL circles about *really white* teachers supposedly having it better than others, but I think the only real advantage is that a *really white* guy can overcome the stigma in China against ugly teachers. It's harder for women and non-whites to overcome being ugly in China. Chinese do not like ugly English teachers.

100 girls in 3 years is easily doable, especially for an old guy who is up for any woman under the age of menopause. That's less than one new girl every 1.5 weeks. The only suspicious thing is that he didn't come across one or two girls that he particularly enjoyed and then slowed down or stopped banging new ones.

How do white women do with the cooming/dating there? My male Chinese e-friends only ever seem to talk about Asian women, although one did say "Western women have big asses."

Women the world over can get laid if they want to. They might need to lower their standards, but almost any woman can get laid. When talking about relatively young and able-bodied female TEFL teachers in Asia, they could date if they really want to.
Having said that, I've worked in TEFL for over a decade and female TEFL teachers have very different dating experiences than men, at least in Asia. The majority of them hate the dating scene. First, most of them are not attracted to the average Asian guy because they are smaller than them and seemingly less confident. Second, most Asian guys are not attracted to the female TEFL teachers because they are bigger than them and seemingly loud and opinionated. Most of the female TEFL teachers in Asia are only interested in dating male TEFL teachers, and most male TEFL teachers in Asia are much more interested in the local women.
There are exceptions to this (mostly in Korea and Japan) but this is still mostly true in those countries as well. And the longer they spend in Asia, the more bitter those women get.

Because only ugly women do tefl jobs.
The pretty and cute girls travel or study abroad and have no problem finding boyfriends whether locals or also foreigners from their country. Imagine dating a fricking foreign teacher l.

You're comparing mid-20s to mid-30s age bracket women (female TEFL teachers) with early 20s age bracket girls (students and gap year travelers). Apple and oranges, anon.

China expats will larp about fricking anything cause they are insecure as frick. They will larp about how many girls they fricked, larp about the qualifications, larp about their wage, larp about where they are from, etc. Take anything expats (especially men) say with a grain of salt

        >larp
I don't know if you've actually been there, but if you're white and remotely attractive you can rack up a triple digit belt count in 1-2 years if that's your goal.

Late but have you considered Taiwan? It's the easiest and nicest to get to, and live in, not that interesting but you are a short flight away from a ton of other countries. It's like China and Japan mixed together, it looks like Japan but with scooters and Chinese language and food. You also don't feel like the government is watching you, because it's not China.

Not the OP, but I just got hired for a job in one of the big cities in Taiwan. Any tips on what to expect? I've taught three years in the USA, so not worried about the job duties, but was wondering about day-to-day life there.

As a mixed Chinese-Canadian family, all I can say is, stay the frick out of China for the time being. Most of our China side in Fuzhou work in low level government, many are teachers. They're saying foreign teachers are locked down with no income, deported or arrested based on region and circumstance. I'm nationally Canadian and we aren't welcome right now.

What's it like teaching English in Europe? Czech Republic, Poland, and Spain is where I see the most jobs, but most people seem more interested in Asia. Is the drinking and fricking truly that much better?

      >Is the drinking and fricking truly that much better?
The combination of pay, cost of living, and standard of living is usually much better in Asia than Europe. And if you like cheap lager beer and small-bodied women, the drinking and fricking is better too.

        >The combination of pay, cost of living, and standard of living is usually much better
What is the pay for a teacher in europe? The housing looks com-block in both cases.
        >if you like cheap lager beer
        nah
        >and small-bodied women
        very much
        I guess 2 out of 3 ain't bad.

I've never worked in Europe, but during a boring spell during Covid I did submit a shit load of applications and did some interviews before winding up in Kazakhstan. The pay in Poland and Ukraine (lol) was under $1000/month and the cost of living wasn't cheap (or didn't seem cheap to me). I could have still gone because I have other incomes and just teach for the visa and the fun, but Kazakhstan seemed more interesting (and turned out to be probably more boring after the initial culture shock), and I returned to Asia once those countries opened back up.

Why do Americans do this? Don't they have better things to do with their life than to listen to other people talk. It's a bug activity.

          People who can, do.
People who can't, listen to podcasts.
People with no lives at all watch video recordings of podcasts.

Americans are bugs who do as they're told. CNN told them X is bad? Then X is bad. I've had more constructive conversations with Chinese than with Americans.

My cousin is Portuguese, and she teaches English in Hong Kong, she has a masters degree from Coimbra University, and she has a good living there. I don't think looking white has anything to do with teaching English, what matters is your credentials. Are you actually qualified to teach English? They won't give you a job teaching English if you studied chemistry in university, you know what i mean?
