Thailand

Sup /tr/ans/v/estites,
I'm planning a trip to Thailand in October, plan to stay there for about 3 weeks. I'm mostly interested in national parks, hiking and some ancient buildings or temples. I have little interest in beaches and fancy new or renovated temples. I already have a plan of sorts but I'd appreciate some tips if you've got any. Budget is around 2k USD for the lot. It should be about 700$ for a roundway trip airplane ticket and another 300$ in accomodation, got that side figured out.

I likely will, it's on the list. Aside from some painfully low-tier banter, you got any tips?

    >ancient buildings or temples
There are two major historical parks built around ancient capitals, Ayutthaya (close to Bangkok, can even be done as a long day trip from BKK) and Sukhothai (older and farther north). Sukhothai is IMO a bit more interesting because it’s less manicured, and the nearby ruins of Si Satchanalai even more so, but Ayutthaya is bigger, and all three are old, significant, and worth seeing. The newer old capital of Lopburi (again close to BKK) is probably most famous nowadays for being overrun with monkeys, but there’s some interesting old ruined architecture there, too.

There are a number of Angkor-era Cambodian ruins in the Northeast that are well worth checking out—Phanomrung in Buriram province is the biggest and arguably most impressive, but the site at Phimai in Nakhon Ratchasima province is slightly more accessible (can reach it easily via public transport), and a cute little town has grown up around it. Other Angkorean sites, in provinces including Khon Kaen and Surin, are smaller and largely more ruined (some are not much more than piles of bricks), and really can only be easily reached if you’re driving, which I don’t recommend to most people visiting Thailand.

Some of the temples in and around Chiang Mai are 700+ years old, although as they’ve mostly been in continuous use with a lot of renovation they may not look it. Only the big old stupas/chedis really show their age. My favorite up there is probably Wat Umong, but they’re all pretty nice. The oldest bits of justifiable tourist-favorite Wat Phra That Doi Suthep above Chiang Mai date from the 14th century, but most of the structures up there are newer than that.

South of Chiang Mai, in Lamphun, Wat Phra That Hariphunchai supposedly has bits that are from the 9th century. Hariphunchai was its own little kingdom for a few hundred years before it got conquered by Lan Na (main Northern Thai ancient kingdom). There’s a small museum in Lamphun about it.

      >Chiang Mai
I stayed in there about 18 years ago was pretty chilled out. Old city. Night market. A bit hippyish. Although they were starting to build some big chain hotels so no doubt changed since
Although the windy trip up to the temple was stomach churning squeezed in the back of a group open air bus/ thingy surrounded by fumes from little motorbikes

Hijacking this thread. R8 my 2-week thailand itinerary
    option 1:
    >bangkok
    >bangkok
    >bangkok
    >krabi
    >krabi
    >krabi
    >koh samui/phangnan
    >koh samui/phangnan (fullmoon party, yes im a failed normie leave me alone)
    >koh samui/phangnan
    >phuket
    >phuket
    >phuket
    >bangkok
    >bangkok
    >home
    option2:
    >bangkok
    >phuket
    >phuket
    >phuket
    >krabi
    >krabi
    >koh samui/phangnan
    >koh samui/phangnan (fullmoon party)
    >koh samui/phangnan
    >bangkok
    >bangkok
    >bangkok
    >bangkok
    >bangkok

option 1 would see bangkok and krabi being the more "active part" of the trip, with daytrips and lots of sightseeing, with the post-FMP part being mostly beach chilling.
option 2 would be a mix of high activity and chilling throughout. We would pretty much leave Bangkok on the same day we arrive.
I'll be travelling with a few others, they seem to prefer option 2 because it "makes sense" in their eyes to do phuket and krabi in one sweep but I dont think that matters at all. Imo option 1 is way superior.

What do you guys all think? Happy to post more detailed versions. Am i dumb for caring too much about frontloading the "active" part?

Your holiday seems… really beach-heavy to me, whichever itinerary you choose. I suppose if that’s really what you and your friends are into, go for it, but I would personally choose just a single island or beach destination (a toss-up for me between Samui and Phuket, with a slight preference for Samui) and use the other days to go somewhere upcountry. The North is always popular, but I will always love the less-visited Northeast for history, food, the Mekong, and people; I think it’s the friendliest, least jaded part of the country by a very wide margin. But that’s mostly just me.

I’m also scratching my head a bit to think of extensive sightseeing and day-tripping options out of Krabi, apart from rock climbing; it’s a very beautiful coastline but a fairly sleepy town. Phuket probably has more going on, some of it cool, some of it sleazy. But of course there aren’t really day trips there, either, apart from visiting different parts of the island. The southern coast and little off-islands below are really nice, the old bits of Phuket city are attractive, and Patong Beach is gross (so is Chaweng, on Samui, for what it’s worth—Bo Phut or Laem Saet, among others, are much better IMO).

Like the majority of people who live on Ko Phangan, I think the FMP absolutely sucks, but if you really want to vomit into the sea with Australians who are too drunk to dance or speak, go for it, I guess. Note that anyone there who offers to sell you MDMA, ecstasy, or cocaine is actually just selling low-quality amphetamines if they’re not just selling baking soda or dog deworming pills, so caveat emptor, I suppose. The mushrooms are usually real but may be covered in water buffalo feces (the local name for them is hèt khîi khwaay, ‘buffalo shit mushrooms,’ because that’s where they grow in the wild).

Bangkok for last for shopping, no dragging around heavy luggage. But anticipate getting sick.

I also sometimes recommend that people who haven't been to Thailand before see Bangkok only after checking out some other parts of the country. It is in many ways fantastic, and I do love the place, but it's nothing like the rest of Thailand at all, and it doesn't always make a good first impression. Traffic, bad air and weather, mostly neither very old nor very beautiful as a city. I'm an ancientgay and only really came to love Bangkok after getting to know the rest of the country a bit.

    DERETE!

The only temple you need to go to is Golden Buddha in Bangkok. It's the only one with a real ethereal healing energy. I know these things. Actually, there is one more accessible genuine one. Prapathom Chedi or something like that East of Bangkok. That one is nicer since there isn't a security gaurd menacing you and making you walk through in 1 minute with the other tourists. Golden Buddha is small but potent. Any other temple, waste of time.

If these women only want me for my money, then why do they never ask for any, never expect me to pay for anything, sleep with me as often as I like and then graciously fare me well when I leave, smiling contentedly, aware that we are unlikely to see each other again?

Enjoying wasting your money on my cum recepticles.
