They have Buddhist beggars at Times Square?

They're not really Buddhist, most are mainland Chinese who don't the difference between Buddha, Mao, and Santa Claus. They stay away from East/Southeast Asians and target obvious tourists.

Sees stupid location on TV his entire life. Has a 20 hour layover in NYC. Visits Times Square, WTC site, Yankees game. Must be moronic drone except I refused to spend more than 24hrs in your shithole/checked it off the list and will never return. Enjoy your rats.

"Fake monks" are thing in Thailand as well, at least they were 10 years ago. The locals hated them (obviously).

nah, if they were dressed like this in thailand and running scams they would be arrested.

thailand has serious laws when it comes to buddhism. you can't just put on the orange robe and walk around if you're not a monk

these scammers in Times Square are chinese that used to wear chinese style monk robes but when there was enough bad press about that apparently they've switched to theravada robes.

There are a ton of fake monks begging in Thailand, in tourist spots. They put on the robe and walk around for a couple hours then take it off and go drink.

Wouldn't really care if they actually were doing that shit here, frick tourists, anyone who visits NYC for Times Square is braindead

You live in that shithole and call others braindead? Everytime I had to go to NYC, first thing I did was turbo clean my hands and shower because how fricking disgusting the city is.

These kinds of shitheads live everywhere OP, and they aren't limited to fake Buddhist c**ts. I was on the lightrail home from college and some deaf guy was handing out little packets during the ride, and at the end he stood at the fricking door with his hands out trying to get "donations" for the packets he forced into everyone's hands.

real monks don't beg from tourists
the people you encountered are scammers dressed as monks
they have no shame because they are likely not even Buddhist, and are simply running a grift

If there is one good thing about being a Chinese in NYC (there isn't any), it's when one of these frickers walk toward me and at the last second pretend I don't exist (when they finally look at my chink face.)

Lots of them at Time Square and Rockefeller Center.

Best lesson I ever had was going to the Angkor Wat with a Russian backpacker I met on the bus from Laos. A few swearwords, spits and readied backhands made the hordes of beggars avoid us after like 20 seconds.

I like real Buddhist beggars like in Japan where they just stand in a corner ominously chanting with a big ass hat or parading down the street banging scary bells. That makes me more inclined to donate. Plus they never approach you
