I fricked at least 50 girls over a 2 year period when I lived in Taiwan. The funny thing is I'm back in the UK now and I always seem to match with Taiwanese girls and have banged at least another 5 since coming home.

China and Japan are awesome but Taiwan has that "hidden gem" feel and it's true that the people are friendlier.

it is because taiwan is a low tier chinese province. all politics aside, it behaves like and has an experience of a chinese province which is either poor or has few white people there. go to liaoning or inner mongolia and the experience of life is similar.

If you think Mainland driving is scary then you should be shitting yourself in Taiwan. Same level of chaos at 10x the speed

          >Same level of chaos at 10x the speed
I've been to both and lived in one. Traffic in Taiwan is basically what you'd expect of a normal, developed country. Drivers there obey the law and the only thing chaotic about it is all the scooter traffic. Mainland traffic on the other hand is like bumper cars. People don't use turn signals, they ignore lanes. It's a free for all. They drive slow because if they hit someone they don't want to kill them, which happens often since pedestrians often stand amid traffic to cross a busy street.

            >Traffic in Taiwan is basically what you'd expect of a normal, developed country

I've lived and driven in both and you're talking out of your ass. Taiwanese traffic is nightmare mode compared to West Euro or USA. Mainland is largely the same although driving in T1 cities is more civilized than driving in Taipei IMO, and I found drivers in Taiwan to drive at higher speeds generally.

              Anonymous

You're a liar. Nobody whose driven in both countries would claim traffic in Taiwan is as bad as the mainland. China has some of, it not the highest traffic mortality rates in the world.

                Anonymous

Kek I dont know what to tell you anon. The traffic fatality rate is indeed higher in Mainland (12/100k inhabitants vs 18/100k, per wikipedia. West Euro all around ~3) but Im telling you 1) that the experience as a driver is more or less the same 2) that to assert Taiwan traffic is ‘basically what you’d expect in a developed country’ (clear implication being that its like the West) is ridiculous and obviously wrong to anyone who’s ever set foot in Taiwan

                Anonymous

I never drove in Taipei, but i drove plenty in other cities. The only difference between western and Taiwanese traffic as far as I could tell is that prevalence of scooters necessitates a little extra chaos and maneuvering. People followed rules and were fairly non-aggressive.

People in Taiwan are so laid back. It’s like if Jamaicans could learn calculus. Perfect mix of Japanese autism, Chinese social harmony and Western liberalism. My favorite part is how easy it is to get around the country. In Taipei you’re an hour away from a snowy peak and an hour away from a sandy beach. Also the girls are nice and voluptuous from all the night market food and boba.

I like all the colonial history too. Every city has some old Dutch fort, or Japanese canal, or American station.

The junk food in Taiwan is tasty but if you have more refined taste there’s lots of Chinese haute cuisine and of course the tea is some of the best in the world.

The Dutch were right when they called it Formosa.

    Yeah, I’m thinking Taiwan rocks.

Moving to Taipei in about a month. Planning on staying a couple years to improve my 中文, start studying classical, and maybe try Hokkien.
Looks like Da'an area is hip and trendy with a cursory overview. Any anons with more refined pointers for staying in the city?

      Anonymous

If you can afford to live in a nice and big apartment in Da'an then you're doing better than 90% of Taipei.
Night markets are nice, food is tasty, never had food poisoning after living there for 4 years. Very unhealthy.
You can eat cheap and healthy without having to cook. Lunch time there are set meals around 150-200 NTD with proper veggies and meat.
Prepare for mold. Dehumidifier is the easiest option.
In winter, remember to go outside of Taipei once in a while because weeks can go by without the sun ever appearing and it fricking sucks.
Get into hiking, even Taipei itself is surrounded by nice short hikes.
Hot office ladies are abundant in the 101/Xiangshan/City Hall triangle. Go to bars around this area if you want to fool around with overworked qts.
Stay out of Wanhua, while it's no where near dangerous, it's grimy and there's frick all in that area.
