All the big landmarks in every cities are overrated and tourist traps. Stick to the lesser-known places and youll find your trip more enjoyable.

    There you go.

What even is a tourist trap?
I went to the Basilica in Venice, and felt nickled and dimed there. Still enjoyed myself. Still would recommend going there. But it felt bad having to pay thrice while I was in there, every time I went to a new room I got charged.

The Pyramids of Giza is not a tourist trap. Paying for a camel ride is.

It’s like $5 to get into the basilica in Venice, how the frick do you feel “nickel and dimed” paying $5 to see some cool art for 20 min

Its that the full ticket is not charged at the door. The full ticket involves a lot of "if I'm already here I might as well see this as well" situations that cost (small amounts of) money

For example some of the arab-norman churches in palermo, where they've got two churches next to each other. One is filled with mosaics that you can see from outside and costs 2 euro, the one directly adjacent to it costs 3 euro and is shielded by a curtain. You assume of course that the 3 euro church is more impressive, but there's literally nothing inside, so for 3 euro you get to go in and say "that's it?" and turn around to leave.

The restaurants in central Istanbul close to Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque are all tourist traps, they charge you 3-5x as much for an inferiour meal.

    >Pisa
Leaning tower is neat for about 15 seconds. Don’t make a special trip. If you’re driving by anyway then it’s worth a brief detour.

    > Blue Lagoon
Expensive and full of Insta hags. Every village has a municipal heated pool and hot tub, go there instead, you’ll be the only tourist.

    > Paris
All the stuff you want to see is crammed with other tourists and scammers. Shame. You can still have a nice time if you accept the downsides.

    > NYC
The spiritual home of globohomo. It’s crap. Yet some people love it.

those are cosy, but they don't have a bar. the real trick is renting a cabin with a hot tub in the middle of winter. getting drunk and passing out in the hot tub.

One of my favourite travel experiences: sitting in a hot tub somewhere outside Selfoss drinking beer with my frens watching the northern lights. It was just as spring was starting, so still snowy and freezing cold with crystal clear skies. Milky Way, shooting stars, and all that. 100% based experience.

I've never been on a cruise ship, but it seems those would be the ultimate tourist trap.

cruising is odd. if you are elderly or otherwise low mobility I can see the attraction. You get to see edited highlights of many places and eat catered food while feeling a bit fancy. if you're not a boomer they're a bit shit

Being on a cruise is fun for like the first day or two, then the novelty wears off fast, and it's like being trapped on a hotel, surrounded by water, and everywhere outside your room is crowded, like, Magic Kingdom around Christmas, crowded. When you're at port it's for, at most, 12 hours, which is basically nothing

Can we just, as a board, agree that cruises aren't SighSee? Cruises are fine for what they are, and if you can get a good deal on a few days at sea, maybe with a stop in Jamaica or Nassau, it's a decent way to spend a long weekend with a girl, especially if you live near a port, as I do.

nyc is great to live there but for tourism it's meh

      >nyc is great to live
Dude, what? Awful winters, a significant demo that never has and never will bother with learning English, a bigger homeless problem than Los Angeles (better hidden perhaps, and less tent cities, but much higher "crazy motherfricker who is as likely to stab me, shit in a metro janitor's mop bucket, and/or start furiously jerking off on the L Train" per capita) and a higher cost of living than San Francisco where a "studio" apartment AKA four walls and a roof will run you $3-$6K depending on the borough. How is it a great place to live? It honestly needs to break off from the rest of New York and become it's own territory so it can stop ruining an otherwise great state.

Mount Rushmore. Yea, it's cool. What's not cool is paying $40 to park and another $40 to stand among 1000 people for one photo. Most people stay less than 15 minutes.

What did you expect? It's a man-made monument in the middle of fricking nowhere. Also who travels just to take pictures of one's self standing in front of shit? Women do that.

Why do morons keep saying this?

It's a cruise, on a ship. Sea days are listed in the itinerary. You know exactly what you're getting into

          >Why do morons keep saying this?
          Because it's accurate.
          >You know exactly what you're getting into
Knowing and understanding are two very different things, and it's important for people who are considering going on a cruise for the first time to understand what exactly a "sea day" entails, which is mostly boredom, punctuated by spikes of anxiety caused by obnoxious boomers and unsupervised kids. YMMV, depending on how much there is to do on a given ship, and how much/little one cares about being nickel and dimed.

Personally? I find the best way to spend days at sea is in my cabin, getting shit-faced, sitting on my balcony with my wiener in the mouth of whatever girl I decided to bring. But, I've got this down to a science because for all the negative things one can say about cruises (and there are many) it's still one of my favorite ways to knock out a long weekend.

I did a cruise with Windstar and it was pretty nice. No kids, and an oddly lopsided gender split that was mostly women in the 30-50 year old range.

I went to Moraine lake this year at the start of September and you can't get into the parking lot unless you drive up at 2-3am and camp there (which technically isn't allowed). Most of the day Lake Louise is also full. I was car camping alone so I could do anything necessary but there were a lot of pissed off tourists who had no idea they driving up into a revolving door.

Canadian Rockies is in two parts. There are the areas known to social media brainlets, which are so busy that they're almost unbearable. And then there is the rest of it, which is basically empty and just as pretty

Facts. If you use the AllTrails hiking app, select any hike rated as “hard” and you’ll feel like you’re alone in the Rockies. It’s one of my favourite places in the world but you won’t see its full beauty at the lakes (even though they are nice). You have to put in the work and hike your ass to a mountain top

I dont think so. I’ve been on hikes I underestimated and as soon as you reach points with more exposure than you’re comfortable with, just turn back. Kind of hard to get lost as well if you bring a powerbank for your phone because AllTrails shows you where you are on the trail. Just gotta be smart and use your common sense. If the hike seems like too much it probably is.

You have to get off the strip in Vegas. You can get a good meal at the casinos, but why pay $200 for a steak at Le Cirque when you could go eat the best dinner of your life at Viet Noodle House in Chinatown for $12.

The time to do Vegas is April and in October so you can hike red rock and walk the strip and actually enjoy it.

Cappadocia Turkey is basically nothing and the hot air balloon is 20 people to a gondola for absurd prices. It is also super out of the way and requires a flight from Istanbul and a 1.5hr car ride and at lest one nights stay in "cave hotels". massive waste of time and money.

    If it's in a guide it's a tourist trap.
Even the big guides only cover like 0.5% of the country and every chinks and fat american girls traveling will be concentrated in those spots.

Most of those places you can go and walk for 10 minutes and you're already out of the cringe shit anyway so if you're not a moron you shouldn't ever find yourself in tourist trap except by accident.

In southern California, the wineries in Temecula do wine tastings. For $25 at each winery, you get four 1 ounce cups. That's less than a glass of wine for $25. Up north in Napa, a lot of places charge $40 or more for those tastings.

Everywhere we went in France, the wine tastings were free. We'd buy a whole bottle for $10 anywhere we went. If you're going to do a wine tour, do that shit in France.
