Traveling to Santo Domingo

Plane lands after midnight, not trying to get into trouble, especially not my first trip there - how do I safely arrive to my hotel? Do I schedule a shuttle with a company?

Why not get a shuttle or schedule a private pickup? Unless you're on a budget or have something to prove to yourself. Get yourself and your luggage to your hotel.

The taxis at the airport are all heavily regulated and charge a flat $40USD to take you anywhere in the city. Uber would probably be half price but is always a risk

and I don't know if there would be Uber at 2am. but definitely those taxis. The govt kinda doesn't want tourists getting killed

Got it. So the taxis at the airport are heavily regulated, What do they look like, what do I look for to ensure they're legit & I get there safe? Novice question, I'm aware.

im not exactly sure. I just remember a long line of vans, here's the webpage
        https://www.santo-domingo-airport.com/taxi.php

Why would uber be more dangerous? It seems in many shitholes it's actually safer than local taxis

because they're regulated because they don't want tourists to get robbed/scammed/murdered by the aggressive Santo Domingo population

How does one find out which countries are safer to use taxi vs uber? Seems like it would depend on the local regulations, but I wouldn't know how to find that info online

I don't think there's any countries where Uber is unsafe, barring shit like some drivers account getting hacked/car stolen/fake credentials so verify all the driver's details before getting in the car. There's also countries where Uber still skirts the law and taxi drivers or local cops are aggressive towards them.

I'd be inclined to Uber but I can hit the ground running in latin america, if you're new to the place it might be intimidating. Guy might not speak english for example so write your destination down.

Airport-specific taxis are a common scam in latin america though, where they charge you an exorbitant rate, literally 2-5 times what a normal taxi would cost, under the guise of "we have a large car that can fit more luggage than a regular taxi" or "the driver speaks (basic) english." I refuse to play into their scam if possible but it's ostensibly safe, just scammy.

              >I don't think there's any countries where Uber is unsafe
I mean it can happen anywhere
there was a big news story in the USA about some uber driver killing their pick up
and a bunch of other shit

is there any reason to go to DR other than cooming?

It's a decent first trip. Zona colonial is nice, the cooming is nice, but it's fricking expensive the flight & hotels right now. If I didn't hate America so much I would've just visited Florida but I went the international option. The real place I want to go to is south east asia.

DR is a major tourist destination. Mostly non-coomers I think. Lots of women tourists and families. It's got all-inclusives, beaches, mountains, nature, historic stuff, restaurants, nightclubs. Probably one of the most diverse tourist-friendly Caribbean island destination.
