UK immigration

Is UK a decent country to immigrate too?

In USA I can make about 60k a year but I really hate my job (serious random drug tests and shit hours).

I have UK citizenship from my father, but I have not been in 25 years.

I have saved up a lot of money but is it worth immigrating too?

Is life better in USA being a garbage man than UK?

In USA garbage man is a pretty typical male job you make 25$ an hour, but work 50-60 hours a week doing hard labor with random drug tests, in a city with high taxes and 350k buys you a shit box.

And the retirement kind of sucks, it's shitty teamsters not government.

    >Is life better in USA being a garbage man than UK?
I was very curious about this, so I did ten minutes of Googling; the internet tells me that you’d make a lot less as a bin man in the UK than in the US. Starting salary (wage?) is evidently around £17K, maxing out at £25K or so, or up to £31K in London, but London is guaranteed to be exponentially more expensive than wherever you live now; with currency conversion it looks like the most a garbage man can possibly earn in the UK is about US$39,000. Wages are generally lower in the UK than they are in the US, across virtually all industries. But perhaps the hours or conditions might be a bit better?

I have multiple American friends who live in the UK, and it clearly agrees with them, but I think they all took pay cuts, and the ones who live in London laugh about how incredibly expensive it is; you won’t likely find a home to buy there for less than a million.

You might go for a visit and see if you actually enjoy it before you think about relocating. And perhaps think about skilling up to some type of better-paid work.

Moving to the UK from the US would be a downgrade. The UK has a low standard of living and low wages. Living spaces are tiny, and Brits are rude and uneducated. I am British born but lived most of my life outside of the UK, wouldn't want to go back there tbh.

There are "no" random drug tests in the U.K. anon. Well there are a handful of small American firms that do it, but it's considered an imposition, and they’re almost always in finance or tech. Council bin men won’t get drug tested by their employer. Drug testing normally only happens if you get involved in a vehicle accident bad enough for the police to attend.

Retirement is better - salary related pensions are standard for public sector employees. Work for several decades and you get decent money as an OAP. Healthcare is included in your tax bill.

Main difference - land is scarce so housing is terrible value for money. On a bin man’s money you’ll be renting somewhere small for £££. If you bring enough $ with you to buy a place / get a mortgage it’s a better prospect.

    Where would you move to?

Go to Chester and commute to Liverpool or Manchester is my advice. It's a smaller city within good distance to those larger ones but it's very old school English and beautiful and also on the doorstep of all the nature in North Wales.

land scarscity is not the issue. It's the home ownership schemes from the 70s pushed by Thatcher that fricked today's housing market.

As much as I hate living in the UK, it really doesn't get much better as far as quality of life which explains why housing is in such high demand.

Filter out Shared Ownership, retirement/lifetime leases, anything mentioning students or investment (ie. it has a tenant living there) and you're looking at £120-130k ($150k-ish)

Why would you move to an immigrant hellhole? Stay in the USA, there's plenty of nice, white only places in the mid-west.

Moving to the UK is akin to moving to Mumbai or Mogadishu. This place is a multicultural shithole with ever decreasing standards of living and public services, thanks to streetshitter nepotism.

Real wages in the UK are very low, and average living spaces are almost as bad as Japan. I am reasonably happy here for now, I make decent money (though I hate my job) and live in one of the few nicer towns that hasn't been Islamified (yet). I may emigrate in the future. I don't think moving here from the US is a good idea currently, our economy is getting ugly and you will definitely have worse living standards than you have now.

You work more but also definitely get paid much more than you would here. Bin man starting salary here is £17000, about $20000, literally a third of your current pay, and once you factor in income tax and national insurance this goes down to £15171 a year or £1265 a month, it will be impossible to live anywhere here like this.

As for the chav infested shitholes, just pick anywhere north of (and including) Birmingham. Here's some for free: Blackpool, Doncaster, Nottingham. There are some rare nice places of course but they will be much too expensive for the likes of you or me (or anyone not rich).

Consider this, even if you want to live in a shitty £70000 two bed apartment in blackpool of all places, if you have £7000 to cough up for a mortgage deposit that means you have £405 mortgage payments monthly. Add bills on top of this which are ridiculous right now probably north of £300, food costs for the month say £200 a month. You are now left with about £360 and we have not even factored in council tax, transport costs like car insurance (you will definitely want to drive here public transport is shit) or anything else you would like to do in your free time like your drugs. All of this so you can live in an absolute shithole like blackpool where you will certainly be surrounded by the scum of the earth.

That still is only equal to about £1700 a month after tax national insurance etc, and it seems based in macclesfield/crewe which will definitely be more expensive than Blackpool (although probably suits what you are looking for in terms of area) its doable on that salary but you will be living in a shitbox apartment. And that job requires a UK HGV and CPC license, so until you are here and pass those you will have no chance of getting that job, your US licenses are not valid. Atleast the roads here are decently safe (as there is so much fricking traffic its impossible to get up to a speed to do anything dangerous most of the time) so you should be able to pass them easily if you really wanted to.

Also you mentioned travelling. Travelling is ass here unless you have copious money. Everywhere fun costs hundreds in flights, and the closeby european destinations that are cheap like Italy France etc cost hundreds in accommodation anyway so works out to the same. The only places that are both cheap in flights and accom are boring eastern European nothing cities, although there are some exceptions eg Budapest.

I'm probably pretty jaded of this country at this place to be honest so take all this with a pinch of salt. If you really want to try it give it a go, as said its not really an especially terrible place, just a soulless one.

Outside London and the South East that's a liveable salary but being the bin lorry driver is stretching the classical definition of being a bin man a bit. You could probably add another £5-10K onto that by being a normal HGV driver.

There's also the option of going on the social housing register. Without any kids or underlying conditions you'd be right at the back of a queue and you wouldn't get the rent paid for you but if you got one, you get 20%-50% off of the "market rate" rent and sometimes get the option to buy at a reduced price after a while. The disadvantage is council houses are more likely to be in a shitty area and you can get trapped in sink hole estates.

Almost all bin man in america are Class A CDL meaning (+26000 lbs).

Truck drivers in USA normally make about 300$ a day of work (11 hour day); but I do think the working conditions are worse here, because they generally stay out 4 weeks and get 5 days home time.

The only problem with HGV is that I need a regular drivers license for 1 year before HGV.

I might make a trip to my cousin in Perth, Scotland just to get my drivers license; and see his horrible life as a taxi driver.

If you can crash with your cousin while you do your driving and get the necessary licenses that will probably be your best option. Take it as a chance to explore the country a bit too see for yourself if you like it.

I'm originally from an area north of London and immigrated to the US in the mid-2000s. There are definitely times that I miss "home" but returning to visit often leaves me feeling rather bleak. As one Anon pointed out, very little changes (which is great if you like a sense of normalcy in that regard). The shops on high street might change faces but, again, not much else moves. It also feels like the population of my hometown has thinned out either through old age expiration or the younger crowd moving elsewhere for opportunities. I do miss many distinctively British things (nary a single neighbor had a kettle when I arrived in the US and I found it baffling) but I guess I feel more hopeful where I live now. And my accent attracted a lot of women, at least initially. I never had to worry about a social safety net so YMMV.

A really popular show in England is "Cant Pay? We'll Take It Away!" which boils down the harsh realities of living in England. If you move there you will be borderline homeless your entire stay, your apartment will shrink to a fraction of where you live now and overall you will have a shit time after the "new country feel" goes away. It's a decent tourism stop if you get out of London, but for fricks sake don't move to the UK.

That show doesn't reflect all that much. It is essentially about poor people who are bad with money not being allowed to keep things they can't afford. These people make terrible financial decisions and would be way, way worse off in other places without the government programs and social safety nets of the UK. The more clued in poor people game the frick out of the system

It's nowhere near as bad as people make out, though it does have its drawbacks. This site is full of thirtysomethings who were either too thick to do well at school, or worse still, underachieved. They're embittered by their own failures and blame it on the government, or society in general. In many cases, they are on antidepressant drugs and the sight of a few grey clouds is enough to send them on a month-long shitposting rampage about how awful their homeland is.

I live in the East Riding and very much enjoy my life. I had an American friend at school and he was from the Midwest, though he now lives in Texas. He says he very much misses it here and might one day return.

It's fricking horrible for everything except making £££ if you're from eastern europe like me. Lived 9 years in the midlands, the average living conditions are downright appaling. It is normal for houses to have mould in corners of the rooms. Most of tasty food I ate there was cooked by myself as eat out places are overpriced and most times mediocre at best. SighSee aspect is mostly crap since most good spots like Snowdon in wales are hounded by tourists. Weather is windy and wet, making -1C feel like -6C (i now don't get cold because I used to constantly be so cold thwre). Architecture - depressing. People at your workplace will be 95% NPC's incapable of discussing anything else than the current israelite media happenings. They won't 'tell it to you straight' too. Made some really nice and funny friends for life too. Children's behaviour is rotten in schools because of uncaring parents. And from what i hear the place is spiralling down fast economically. Only utility i personally found in it is to get free education through a sponsored enginnering apprenticeship, making a lot of money then fricking off to a place I now happily live in without carpets in bathrooms and mould in my room.

It is basically pointless signing up to that as a non severely disabled man. You will never get anywhere and people will be prioritised over you constantly. Someone who ticks their boxes who is homeless may have a place by a years time, but it may be infested with rats and be structurally unsound and unfit for purpose. Imagine living in a converted old house with thin floors and walls so you can hear every one of your neighbours movements and conversations, and this is aside from them being complete c**ts. Meanwhile illegal immigrants get put up in 4 star hotel accommodation and dominos pizza all for free because the government is too backwards to repeal EU human rights laws to be able to deport them

You want to read the SOL, the Specified Occupations List, which details required professions and which visas each one qualifies for. The page for each profession contains links to the visa type pages which detail age restrictions etc.

      This

Rural small towns and villages are comfy, everything else is mudslime infested shitholes (even small towns have them but less). Nicer parts of London are expense, the rest is little mogadishu and islamabad. Scotland is absolutely terrible, drug and chav infested shithole, people shit on England but jesus christ Scotland is way worse.

You will make less than a third of what you will in the US and US prices for many things are much lower than the UK. It’s unlikely you’ll be able to just live in the UK, you’ll have to do serious budgeting every single month. The developers at JAGEX (who make RuneScape) at the height of its profitability were making about 30k a year in todays money. A similar job in the US would be over 100k

Can confirm, mid range Web developer is looking at £35K in the UK. $90k in the US. It's temping to move but only software engineers get work visas

HOWEVER. I get 25 days of holiday + (~10) bank holidays + 1 day a quarter "wellbeing" and once you've been somewhere a year, it's really fricking hard to get sacked.

I try to explain why the US salaries can be so high to euro's and other non americans quite often. basically, in EU countries, a slightly above average and a slightly below average professional worker are pretty close to parity with each other. in the US, if you are even a c**t hair to the right of the bell curve for what you do, you are going to live like a king but unfortunately if you are on the other side of that curve, you might not even get hired in the first place.

              Why?

                Anonymous

                couple reasons.

                1. very little in the way of job security/protection. if you don't perform, they just sack you and get someone else. this is reinforced by...

                2. the american corporate world is still very much influenced by the Jack Welch style of management. aptly dubbed Rank n' Yank, meaning that if you fall to the bottom of the organization performance wise, your job is in jeopardy. and thats performance against your peers, not objective performance of the job itself. you could do your job just fine but if Joe Rockstar et al is beating your metrics, it doesn't matter.

                3. talent is statistically rare and every organization wants to either stack its deck or at the least keep that talent out of the hands of the competition. tech companies are notorious for doing this buts its been a staple of american business for decades now.

                4. american professions are very centered on the individual, meaning theres always one guy on any given project who's king shit of frick mountain and when things go right, he gets most of the laurels but when things go wrong he eats all the shit and probably loses his job. euro's don't really do this to such a degree, decisions and responsibility/accountability is spread out through group consensus, which protects the individual somewhat when things go sideways. so in the US consistently good individual performers are rewarded very well while poor ones have their careers obliterated.

Honestly, even factoring this in, UK wages are hilarious. The top performer of a field in the UK will earn less than the mid level of that field in any other developed country (US, Australia, Canada etc). Add to this the extreme UK cost of living and shit weather (and proximity to even worse places like France). If you’re unfortunate enough to have been born there and not talented enough to emigrate, you can make nice lemonade still but you wouldn’t move there. You may as well hit your wiener and balls with a hammer.

Europe in general is just shit. Low wages, shit weather, rude people, only thing going for it is shit built by dead empires, but nothing built today. If there were open borders between the US and Europe all of Europe would empty out overnight.

UK is a grim shithole where you will earn less. As an EU gay that has lived in UK and Ireland, I'd rather live in US than any of those dreadful shitholes. They're downright dystopian. At least in US you can earn serious money. Plus you got real outdoors, whereas UK is like one back garden with hardly any woods. Food is dreadful. Only benefit is that Europe is very close, so you could take a cheap Ryanair flight to anywhere for a weekend or an extended trip.

      >As an EU gay that has lived in UK and Ireland, I'd rather live in US than any of those dreadful shitholes.
thats because you have never been to the US. US is huge, there are definitely nice places to live but most are garbage with trash people, especially in this day and age.
UK is not great but it is also not bad, the beauty of the UK is that typical white English person (not from London or other big cities) does not give a frick what some eurogay thinks about him or his country while in many European countries people are obsessed about what others will think about them (this is reflected in politics, culture and even mentality of individual people). In this regard UK is free and free'er than most of Europe, and USA is even more free, chances are you would probably dislike american mentality even more than British.

have you been to europe? the quality of life in somewhere like rural spain is an order of magnitute more comfortable and peaceful than the uk
people there really don't give a shit about the outside world and just live in close communities eating nice food and hanging out
in the uk people absolutely do care what people think about them and constantly try and signal wealth and status by buying whatever chavvy shit is fashionable or an overpriced car
we have all the materialism of the usa but without the wealth to even actually have nice things

So you talk about small communities in rural spain which are mostly older folk and then chavs in UK, who are 99.9% urbam youth. Its not the right comparison, go to smallerot rural towns in the UK and older people are a lot more laid back, then go to cities or larger towns in Spain you will find the spanish urban youth and worse. I visisted few friends in rural Spain this summer and it was very comfy inside with ac on until I stepped outside and nearly died due to extreme heat.

Agree with the other gay, you will probably love it but it depends what you want out of it. Want endless socialization, sports, food and access to Europe? You'll like the UK (London). Want plenty of space and access to more outdoorsy activies? Don't come here.

I want to do more free diving and fishing so hopefully I can move to WA sometime in the future. Also it's too cold.

You can absolutely live in a comfy house in the peak district with access to some of the nicest scenery in the UK with shitloads of trails. Generally cheaper than the South East too. Pic related is in Bakewell and is £350k.

The problem is everyone wants to live on the commuter belt to London.

My parents live in London (st. Albans, previously Richmond) and love it. They are absolutely loaded though. I've obviously been there a lot and personally I wouldn't want to live there as anything less than an elite. A burger and fries and a soda can cost 50 dollars depending on where you go, etc. Plus the people are pricks and the weather sucks. Other than the tourist shit, the techno scene is the only thing I really like about it.

If you're not rich you'd be better off living somewhere else in the country. I personally loved Liverpool when I visited there, but even that is probably going to be more expensive than many cities in the US

Wages for class 2 & 7.5T driving have been increasing since Brexit, as older drivers retire and it's harder to get European drivers, in the old days class 1 paid much more but it's more even now, with internet shopping and so on.

You need to do your CPC to earn a living from driving in the UK. Why would you be a garbage man, though? These are local government jobs and do not pay as well. You should be able to earn £30k to £40k, depending on the job, hours worked and so on, a good place to start might be a large blue chip company like Tesco (UK equivalent to Walmart).

Wow just hearing about life in the UK is depressing. I'm an uneducated convicted felon and make 60k a year as a chief engineer at a hotel. I do maybe 1-2 hours worth of work on my shift and depend the rest of the day yucking it up with guests and co-workers. Been feeling like a loser lately but at least I own a decent sized house, can pay the bills and have a relaxed job.

    Sorry about your luck britbongs.

It's generally just the housing situation that makes things fricked up.

Free healthcare, generous holidays, very difficult to sack someone without a lengthy process and payoff and a good benefits safety net. Less money but more stable and you're just generally more able to enjoy life.
