Vancouver and Victoria

I'm going to Vancouver for six nights. I'm spending the first two in the downtown area, flying to Victoria on a seaplane and spending three nights at the Empress, and then sleeping in Richmond the last night.

What do you do when you go to Vancouver or Victoria?

I'm late 20s and going with my gf. We don't have a ton of money, we just thought we'd splurge on the seaplane and the Empress because I'm not sure when we'll ever go back to the area. We're looking to check out some parks, museums, cafes, maybe go whale watching, eat at cool spots, enjoy the nightlife, meet cool people if we're lucky. What's the best neighborhood for going out to the bars?

Is the public transportation as infested with homeless as it is in southern California? We weren't going to rent a car but if it's bad I'll reconsider. I was under the impression that public transportation in Vancouver and Victoria are almost as good as Europe.

I am from France and am currently in Vancouver.
Some parts of downtown (“meh”) and some other neighborhoods such as chinatown ans gastown (a LOT of hobos) have these homeless benzo-addicts.
It’s not a nice sight but it’s nowhere that bad. Paris has much worse crackheads who actually shoot themselves with heroin in the subway.
Public transport is pretty efficient and clean. Not a big mess.

don't know about vancouver, for victoria I'd suggest avoiding the downtown bars and going to the beagle on cook street which is walking distance or fifth street which is easy to get by bus

no, vancouver has 2.5 light rail lines and victoria is just busses
rent a car for victoria and drive the waterfront

I'm living in Vancouver, but from a smaller town in AB. I remember being really excited about all the cafes and shopping when I first came. Idk what other touristy stuff there is but this is what I like to do.
        Vancouver
        >> Gastown ( boutiques, breakfast, and cafes)

        >> The rose garden in Stanley park
        >> Granville Market
        >> Robson ( General shopping, lots of bubble tea, good lunch and dinner spots)
        >> 11 am tea is a new Chinese cafe and I think it's pretty neat.
        bakery ( my favourite cafe)
night market is also going on now I think ? it's pretty cool.
        >> Vandusen park

        Victoria

        >> Houseboat dock, lots of floating cafes there too ( there's a really good clam/shellfish seafood place idk what its called though lol.)
        >> generally walking around, lots of cool Victorian houses
        >> China town
^^ all of above can be done in one day realistically
        >> Fujiya foods is really good
I would try and get out to Tofino tbh. it's nice to spend a couple days in the old growth rainforests.

Appreciated. My gf loves cool cafes so I'm sure we'll check out both those places in Vancouver, though I can't find the 11am Tea place. Tbh old growth rainforest sounds sick but we'll probably have to wait for our next trip.

Hi OP, I'm from Victoria, BC originally.

You are staying directly in the center of the "action", Victoria is a sleepy town where almost the majority of citizens are retired. To get the full experience, get the full tourist package from the bus providers outside the Empress. DO NOT RENT A CAR.

Buchard Gardens, Bus Tour, Tiny World, Walking Tour, Craigroch Castle

In the evening go to The Bard and Banker pub on Government street. It was built by a based Canadian that is very proud of Canadian culture and European ideals. He tried to build a pub that pours the perfect pint.

Victoria is very expensive but 3 days you should be able to 100% Complete all the tourist stuff it if you also do a Whale Watching tour.

Thanks anons. Is Tiny World the miniature museum? I was sold as soon as I saw a depiction of some WWII battle. Seems like the chances are pretty solid we'd see orcas on a whale watching tour so we'll do that too. I'm looking forward to Butchart and probably Hatley Castle too. I'm excited to try out The Bard and Banker and the Irish Times.

it's miniature world, it's in the hotel
            >I'm looking forward to Butchart and probably Hatley Castle too.
Hatley isn't the easiest place to get to without driving, can do a tour of the legislature, and there's craigdaroch castle, government house and abkhazi garden in town
there's also the oak bay beach hotel, they got a different waterfront than the inner harbour
if you're going out to hatley, and driving francis king or witty's waterfall is out that way
            >I'm excited to try out The Bard and Banker and the Irish Times.
it's more a place for tourists to take a picture

Is Grouse Mountain worth taking the lift up and down? What about visiting Lynn Suspension bridge (whichever one doesn't have a charge)? What are the most interesting places to eat? We were considering the Mackenzie room.

ride the gondola, especially if you can sit on top
lynn is free, capilano you have to pay for, it's more about if you're already in the area

        >enjoy the nightlife
you are in for a shocker, victoria is the sleepiest city of its size i've ever lived in. The entire city is a ghost town, there is no nightlife here and we've all just accepted it. There is this weird anti-party, anti-club, anti-loud noise sentiment in the air, perhaps because victoria, specifically oak bay (literally the same thing) is home to the highest concentration of boomers per capita in all of canada. The city is highly restricted, highly regulated, very anglo, its not a city for young people to thrive in, start a business in, or add to the culture in anyway.

I've never even been to Victoria and I assumed it was like this because the only people I've ever heard of going there (on the boat from Seattle) are like 70+ years old and rave about how quiet and quaint it is there.

That's surprising, isn't there a university right next to the town? I got the idea for the trip from my uncle who is definitely the traveling/partying (homosexual) type. It's all good though, I think we're gonna have a good time regardless.

Post pandemic, the night life never recovered. A few of the major hotspots for young people, especially targeting non-student crowds, closed and never reopened. There is no liquid cash in this city, its a deteriorating leftist city with a misleading veil of function, literally everything is subsidized. Most young people here live in subsidized housing, if they aren't vancouver trust fund kids. Everything is unreasonably expensive and students can't afford to party downtown, a pint of beer will cost you 9$. There are 2 bars here that students go to, and cater only to a 19-21 audience, the dance floor is pretty much empty at both. Hop on the city bus around 7-9pm and it will be packed full of students coming from the liquor store, on their way to a house party. Most of the millennials and recent university grads have left victoria after the pandemic, either moved to vancouver to get more out of life, or Alberta to save money. Victoria is uncanny mix of 18-22 year olds (who all leave in april) and retirees. Married young professionals from vancouver move to the greater victoria area when they grow tired of "big city" life and rarely venture downtown. Like others have mentioned, the only appeal of Victoria or any city in BC for that matter, is the surrounding nature

strathcona did away with their night club, it's more a sit down bar type place, biggest liquor license in the province, can have 1000 people
lucky varies depending on the set, upstairs is more consistent dance

awful top 40 mashups at upstairs and mostly first year crowd. everything else is sit down places and everyone pretty much ignores each other and mingles within their small groups. BC is the most socially aloof of the provinces, always wondered why that was. If you grew up in ontario, or alberta forget it. There are small towns in the middle of nowhere alberta that party harder than Victoria.
People are friendly, eager to talk and realer with each other too

Why the frick would you come here?
    >Rains 10 months of the year, enjoy enhaling wildfire smoke for the other 2.
    >Gastown is a shithole, Steam Clock has been rated the worst tourist attraction 11 years running. It's not even steam powered.
    >Chinatown is a shit hole, Robson street is a shithole. Enjoy paying 15% tax and 18% tip anywhere on that street (unless you like getting flagged down by the fatass server who feels shortchanged by your tip)
    >Best places to stay are Kitsilano, West End, and Mount Pleasant. That is pathetic considering they have shitty beaches, gays, and more homeless.
Only thing nice about Vancouver is being outside of it (Whistler, hunting & fishing) which you probably can't even enjoy. Seriously, don't fricking come here.

You can't compare the two. Those clowns in the pic above look like a bunch of hippy homosexuals. The homeless in California are subhuman animals that are unpredictable and violent. Because living here is awful. Nice mountains, but it's hyper expensive, the weather gives you SAD, and Vancouverites are some of the most unfriendly people on Earth. I've been stuck here doing uni and people don't even make eye contact wasting my 20s here.

Vancouverites behave anti socially, avoid eye contact, generally unfriendly, there is a disgusting amount of shitskins, severe homeless drug addict problem, it’s too expensive for what you get. You're not paying $2500/mo on rent for a studio apartment in a city of rain though, are you homosexual? It's not just "muh homeless". It's the fact the price to live here does not reflect the standard of living. All you lukewarm IQ hispanics like

Those homeless people look way nicer than LA homeless

want to compare bums as if that is the core issue with Vancouver. High cost of living, high taxation, and low ROI (which homelessness is part of) is why we're telling you not to come here.
