>want to go to Bogota to learn Spanish
>find a few dozen schools
>the home-stays (which don’t include food) are $1700 a month
>the apartments (which are the size of hotel rooms) are $2300 a month
>the lessons are more expensive than what I would pay for at an accredited university in Canada
Are there really white people out there falling for this? They were charging as much hourly for group lessons as I could hire a private tutor for.

in less than a minute of looking i found a loft apartment airbnb in the nice are of bogota for $900 with gym and amenities and a spanish school in walking distance for $10/hour, cheaper if you do online classes. are you fricking moronic or something?

Yeah no I found all of that stuff too. I was thinking the schools would be maybe like $200 for a full semester since you’re working in groups and a college course for credit would be around $400 in Vancouver. As soon as I saw the price of the apartments I realized all of these places are banking on their clientele being moronic. $900 was on the expensive end of apartments I was seeing, too. There are some perfectly nice furnished ones for less than $700.

you aren't going to find basic spanish 101 courses in a college located in a spanish speaking country. college courses aren't directed towards gringos, they are high level spanish courses for aspiring writers, editors, poets, etc. you have to go the spanish school for gringo route or private tutor. private tutor will be cheaper if you can find someone independent. the reason why the gringo schools are more expensive is because many people need to get paid: the business owner, rent for school location, and teachers who are generally more educated (speak better English than most) and thus demand higher wages. it's also a supply and demand thing where demand is high because solo travelers want to make friends so they pay more $$ for in person classes to meet others. in this case you are paying for a community feel. it is oerpriced for what you get in terms of learning spanish

Both the universities in Bogota have programs for exactly that. Immersion programs are common all over South America. Stop posting as if you have any idea what you’re talking about.

This anon is right. Universities have special programs for gringos and they charge higher rate than standard tuition. Expect to pay at least $500 a month if you go this route.
The other private “spanish schools” are directed at tourists on short stays and are not going to be the same they also don’t give you a student visa.
If you want a student visa you have to go through the university and pay up the wazoo for it.

You should still be able to live on $1500 a month. $500 towards the college and $1000 towards other expenses. In Colombia upper middle class is $1000-2000 a month income.

The places I saw were $300 per *week.* For that kind of money I'd be better off hiring a private tutor.

Out of curiosity, what was the school called? The ones I looked at were all $20 minimum for private lessons (which is two to three times what you’d pay on iTalki). The group classes were hardly any cheaper on a cost-per-hour basis.

Other than the name "Bogota," what do you think that city magically offers you? Why not go to Medellin or any other less notable city? Also, what the other guy said, you could literally get a great place for $300-$500 per month on AirBnB or many other websites. Also, why not just make friends there, buy some books, and learn Spanish super fast that way by jumping into the culture completely? Unless you're trying to make some sort of "good-looking resume" for some reason, it just doesn't make sense.

I have friends who go to university there.

I like the structure. At these rates I will probably just hire a private tutor, honestly.

not sure what you're talking about because my university has them and as shithole as this place might be, we also get exchange students from non spanish speaking countries

Way more tourists go through Bogota. More people probably know Medellin because of Narcos but there are far fewer tourists there.

not true medellin is where all the coomers are going now. bogota is cold and the people are buttholes. the only thing bogota has on medellin is its a huge city so theres probably way more to do than in medellin where you are only allocated the small rectangle of el poblado

            >not true
It is true, Bogota alone accounts for more than 50% of all of Colombia’s tourism.

There’s nothing to see there either though. I wouldn’t take those stats too seriously the only major tourism center of Colombia is on the coast Cartagena and to lesser extent San andres.

Bogota gets lot of arrivals simply because the planes fly there first and also gets most of the business travelers being the economic center and capital of the country.

Because medellin is literally nothing but an open air prostitutehouse with a couple of clubs and jackshit to do?

I wonder how much of a scumbag druggie or a boring shit you are that you consider medellin fun at all.

    >the lessons are more expensive than what I would pay for at an accredited university in Canada
But then you would be in Canada and would not be able to engage in sex tourism with desperate brown third-worlders.

Really you should just go to Cuba and frick prostitutes there like all the other Canadians do.
