    >travel to country I want to go to
    >don't speak the language
    >remember before hand I learned enough phrases to get by
    >look at my phone to check itinerary of places I marked down
    >use maps as needed or if needed
    >have fun time regardless

I'll probably never travel to a foreign country that doesn't speak English for this exact reason, sadly.

JFC I hate Anglo’s and Americans so much. Why is it so hard to learn a few basic phrases? Unless you are trying to make friends literally just learn how to order food, hi/goodbye/thanks/, count to 10 and other useful phrases from a book. Literally do it in the plane ride there

If its a popular tourist destination you will always find people who know some English because they deal with tourists all the time, its only a problem if you go somewhere that doesn’t get any tourists you would need to hire a local who can speak English and be your guide and it can be really chepa or really expensive depending on where you go, it definitely can be difficult but not impossible to go anywhere you want without speaking the language. Also google translate is pretty decent for simple phrases so you can always use that.

This is seriously weird bait, mate.

But I do attempt to learn at least basic politeness terms, greetings, and enough numeracy to be able to ask how much things cost and then understand the answers, absolutely everywhere I go. Do the locals appreciate it? Maybe barely, in a few countries. Does it enrich my experience? Arguably not (although I know from actually being able to speak a few languages that being able to have a conversation with a local without making them use English is genuinely satisfying, and often sincerely appreciated). I just do it because I really like languages and it’s fun for me.

Enjoy your trolling and/or your own unique species of autism. I get a lot of mileage out of my own.

    1. Almost every tourist city will speak English to some extent. You're most likely gonna go there anyway.

    2. Never a bad idea to learn a few basic words.
    >Hello
    >Goodbye
    >Thank you
    >No thank you
    >Yes
    >No
    >numbers (0 to 9, maybe even 10^x increments)

      Seconded
Basic travel pro tip I add: Learn how to say the equivalent of "cheers" in the local language, it helps a lot if you want to socialize with the locals. If you do well, you will be offered drinks perhaps even by the bartender.

I took my grandfathers TM 30-611 with me. Pretty handy, dirty nips wouldn't show me the pillboxes though, was able to get me back to my airfield (Narita)

      Strip also came in handy

You can also use older military videos to learn the language and phrases

Remember if you can't find an USA one, you can always rely on the British, seeing as they invaded / colonized damn near everyone.
