And how is that your problem? You're traveling, not settling there. If that's Vietnam then that's Vietnam, move on.

I am moving on. Only staying here for two days as I knew I wouldn't love it but it's awful. Anyway, seems like you enjoyed it. Want to tell me what the appeal is? The rest of Vietnam is amazing.

or maybe I'm just well travelled enough to know that the most important city in a country is usually full of the countries' mentally ill people. Guess how many scam attempts I've experienced in my previous 28 days in the country? Zero. Guess how many in 1 hour of walking around district 1? Like 10. I let this guy glue my shoes together cuz they were falling apart and he was telling me he spent 5 million dong on the little container of glue. I just laughed and thanked him for glueing the shoe and gave him 50k though he obviously was a little bummed. I don't care that I contributed to scams, this city is as shit as it gets already, and I will make sure to not leave the airport and fly to Da Nang or Nha Trang on my next Vietnam adventure. I'll give Hanoi a shot because I haven't been north. Frick you moron backpackers, this city is a shithole, Bogotá or Lima tier.

Hello. Is there a district in Ho Chi Minh City commensurate with the quality of people in the rest of the country? If yes, which district would that be? In my experience, district 1 was full of unsavory types trying to get a quick buck off the white tourist.

For 50k you still got scammed. That glue is worth 10k tops. Go to Ha Giang, Ninh Binh and Hai Phong. The best parts of the country to visit. Anything South of Da Nang is not comparable to the North.

Well most of Asia is like that, not every cities but yeah, kinda like how Beijing is a disgrace to China (and other Northern cities). The capital continent of consooooom and high distrust society, so basically this is it. Also population change; more rural people with zero cultural background move in cities obsessing over money making, and second generation is entirely pressured from birth about money and showing off money. It’s usually true for Asian rurality; extremely materialistic in every sense of the word. Maybe you should try cities with less rural migrants.
20-30 years ago it was not so bad, people still tried hard and cared a bit.

Well cities with a shitload of tourists in Thailand tend to be this way but Thais are less autistic and soulless than any country of Chinese culture inflence (basically a whole lot of East Asia).

Malaysia is a lot more chill and unironically because of islam despite its large number of Chinese people, which tones down the whole consoom. Still quite consoom but they are less autistic about it since they get reminded every once in a while about muh islam is more important than anything else. But that was 15 years ago so who knows.

All of Thailand is like that, but it's compounded by the negative characteristics of the Thai and the gastrointestinal problems you will inevitably face.

If you want to stay in Southeast Asia, go to Malaysia. Make sure you eat at Dragon-I and go get some fresh nasi lemak while you're there. I haven't been to Indonesia, but my interactions with Indonesians lead me to believe that they have the same (superior) characteristics as the Malaysians.

If you want to go somewhere else, I recommend South Korea or Japan. I've never been to Taiwan, but Japanese who go there typically have good things to say about it.

What? I left after 1.5 days. I'm in Penang and it seems pretty cool here.

Man, I can't wait for summer to end.

      Cope. I'm fulltime travelling.

7y expat here. You're right. HCMC sucks for travel. In the South try: Sa Dec, Da Lat, Long Xuyen. In Central try: Da Nang, Vinh, small resort towns around Hue. I've never been to the North.

Yes, I went all over the south except the delta region. Kinda why my low expectations weren't even met for HCMC. Everything else is so nice!

Or he has autism. Either way I’m not sure what he was expecting only staying in the worst part of the city

Let me ask for the 3rd time, what are the best parts of the city for visiting? The worst part of the city is the touristy part? That's kind of unique for anywhere I've been.

I spent a lot of time in Saigon. It's an amazing city but certainly not for everyone. Tell me what kinds of things you're into other than avoiding touts and I'll happily make some recs. That easy my guy. No cope.

I'm really not that picky. The attitude of the people seemed Parisian. I don't know if Vietnamese don't like westerners and usually just hide it very well but they don't even attempt to hide it in district 1. homeless everywhere. Stuff is 2x the price of Da Nang for the same quality.

I really don't think I'm being unfair but I'm willing to go to a different part of the city on my next trip. Man, sometimes this board is something else, the amount of seethe my opinion produces...

I love HCMC, more than Hanoi and WAY more than Da Nang.
All the food stalls on the street, the sea of rooftops you see from a tall building, all the alleyways with hidden gem restaurants or shops.
The guys trying to sell you 'hey sunglasses! sunglasses! cigarettes! maliwanna?' and the tour guides, yes they are very annoying and trying to rip you off. But come on, it's a third world country and to those people you are just a fountain of wealth, that happens everywhere. Also the amount of rubbish in that river is appalling.
I can understand not liking HCMC if you aren't a city person, if you want a city in Vietnam that has a very different atmosphere, try Hue. It's calmer, melancholy, quieter, you might like it more.

      >that happens everywhere
I spent 28 days all over the South and it didn't happen a single time. The only "tout" was some grab driver offering me a ride cuz I was a blond guy walking a midday like a weirdo.

And the experience that really pisses me off was the exchange place because I needed to change my VND to Ringgit. I'm used to civilized places so I handed him my VND and expected to get a quote for the exchange, but he just processes it and hands me the ringgit and the receipt. I was just shocked because I needed some VND for the taxi ride to the airport, but now I had none. Exchange rate was horrible, but I had expected it to be after seeing how scummy the city is.

Hotel greets me with a "what's your reservation number?" "Ok your room is xxx, you booked no breakfast in the morning". before all the cope saying "NOOO THAT'S NORMAL, WHY DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DESERVING OF PLEASANTRIES?" every other stay I had in Vietnam (28 days mind you) have been full of pleasantries. What do you want from me? That's my experience of HCMC. People are telling me that district 1 is great or that district 1 is the worst district and I just didn't have enough of a taste for it. The reality is, HCMC is full of homeless and rude backpackers have ruined the reputation of white travellers, so we're the target of further rudeness. The rest of South Vietnam is not like that. There.
