What are some boring, cheap cities with good food to go to in SEA? Honestly the more boring the better.

    chang mai, thailand
    monthly cost of living
    >rent: $300
    >thai food and purified water: $100
    >electricity: $40 depending on AC use
    >internet: $60 (phone + wifi)
    >taxis: $50
    >incidental costs: $100
    total monthly cost: $650

the air quality isn't great when they are burning the rice fields, but you can stay out of trouble and hunker down in that city since its not total bedlam, but it also has western amenities

you can do something similar in eastern thailand but its like going back in time 40 years for better and worse

I probably sound like a moron, but how can I, as a currently wageless foreigner, get those kind of rents? I can afford to pay a year's rent up front easily, but I probably only want to stay 6 months or so. Will agents reply to my messages?

a significant portion of thai rental economy is devoted to providing housing to transient foreigners, the rate I quoted is for a furnished apartment paid monthly with no contract, and they do your TM30 reporting for you
there are dozens/hundreds of services that can help you, and it is actually as simple as wandering around the part of town you want to live in and walking into the building and asking if they have any furnished apartments/rooms for rent. Chang Mai is not quite as lenient as places like Pattaya for this type of scheme, but they can still be found easily.

They do not care about the state of your finances, only that you can pay the rent at the start of the month. If you don't pay, they kick you out. It's very simple and there is no contract needed.

I advise 100% against paying up front for a year rent or even several months. The singular aspect of SEA is that no matter where you do wind up living, you're going to have some issue sooner or later. You do not want to be 'locked into' renting at a place you hate or with weird shit going on.

Do not, under any circumstances, pay for a year contract unless you know it is exactly what you want in exactly the place you want to be. Seriously.

Budget 1 week for a hotel, and check out the city and the areas you want to be in. If Chang Mai is too uh...chang mai for you, then there is always Bangkok. You don't need to live on sukhumvit, you can easily get a similar cost of living and still be 5 minutes from a train station. You said 'boring' though, and bangkok has the potential to drain your savings quickly if you let it.

Chang Mai is absolutely boring and simple.

Is chang Mai a walkable city? Not in the homosexual "I hate internal combustion engines" way, but is it pleasant to walk around, having sidewalks, promenades, nice areas to walk unmolested by man, machine or beast?

chang mai is a 2nd tier south east asian city
street traffic is shared by motorbikes, pedestrians, and cars/trucks
there are some areas that are 'walkable', but it is not overall deliberately designed to be friendly to pedestrians, it's just a free for all on the main roads, but most of your day to day living is done off on smaller soi's which are kind of like alleys without that much traffic, and everyone walks

bangkok is much more walkable overall, with a more comprehensive and modern MRT

I only recommend chang mai because it is boring and you probably won't spend a ton of money on night life, or be tempted to since its not worth it there

is it cheaper if I have no temptations to start with? the last thing I want to do is "go out". I like strolling during the day to see what city life is like, but that's it. I'd like to take some motorbike daytrips to nature if that's possible

You can do whatever the frick you want, it's Thailand. You make your own rules, and then you do what you like according to your budget. That's why SEA is so attractive as an escapist location.

Just visit and figure it out. You'll stumble and frickup but you'll find your niche and your vibe eventually.

An unfortunately common practice all over SEA for 'long term rentals' provided to foreigners, is that these rooms are vacated due to impending construction around them.

You will be a one or two weeks into your stay and then suddenly one morning you will be awoken at 6am by the sound of drills in concrete and tile cutters. This unholy racket vibrates the concrete walls and is impossible to ignore even with noise cancelling headphones.

In a horrible sleep deprived daze, you will contact your landlord and ask them what is going on, and how long the construction will last.
    >Very sorry Khun Anon, construction will be ongoing to the next 2 weeks! Room renovation is planned. (prayer hands emoji)

They deliberately did not tell you that the construction would be taking place, because they know you would have never got the apartment. You cannot get the up-front money you paid to them back, because it is already distributed and in the pockets of the sub-leasing mafia running the building.

That's just one thing that can happen, but I promise you it WILL happen to YOU if you go long-term.

Wow! Almost makes me want to go to Chiang Mai and eat rice all day!! I remember it like yesterday, in Anime Kawaii Massage Shop when I coomed on this fat girl's japanese back tattoo. We weren't supposed to be having sex in there, then the door knocked and our time was up! A young asian man was waiting by the door and walked right into the coom fumes of the undersized room ready for his Anime Kawaii!! EXPERIENCE!!! EW. Really cute girl though haha good massage!
There is a dutch milk company in Chiang Mai that makes it worth staying for me, but I'm not going to spend that much time in Asia.
