What are TRVs experiences with Egypt

I’m thinking of planning a trip over there for the summer. Is it worth doing to see the Pyramids and temples? Worth seeing the Red Sea coast?

What would I be looking at in terms of costs and visas?

I've never met anyone who has been there and liked it. I spent a month there. Abu Galoom is beautiful but the same snidey, slippery scumbags.
Absolute character dystopia. Awful, world infamous people. The truest shithole of the 87 countries I've visited. Will never go to Morroco because of this warning.
You have made a stupid mistake booking your trip. You probably thought
    >I've got to see the pyramids once in my life
Like I did. Every single Egyptian will try to scam you, every interaction. Case in point
    >be me
    >wander around old Cairo backstreets looking for somewhere to do laundry
    >find a place with very old kindly looking man
    >price is $2 USD
    >confirm that is per kg right?
    >yes
    >confirm again using Google translate
    >yes
    >cone back next day
    >$20 sir
    >wtf no. No. Not a chance
    >dispute draws attention of fluent English speaking older guy
    >says he lived in Scotland his whole life
    >yes, he says, it is intact $2 per piece. Poor old man must have been confused
    >finally pay lessee but still high price
    >later confirm two lying pieces of shit
Typical fricking encounter in Egypt. Many such cases

Don't skip Morocco, it's nowhere near as bad. Egypt is truly the worst. Morocco has its share of similar annoyances but they are nowhere near that level and things in general are manageable by using the usual amount of caution. At least in Morocco not everyone is out to scam you and you can just ignore the touts.

I hope this is the case. I'm going to Marrakech next week and it seems pretty manageable based on my research. Fez seems to be worse but I'm not going there.

Only go if you're REALLY into your Egyptology or have Indiana Jones syndrome.

The Pyramids, temples and tombs are all amazing to see in person, but the country as a whole is a third world mess. Dont go unless you're willing to throw money at the problem and have dedicated guides take you everywhere.

The touts are aggressively annoying, every cop wants a bribe, the food has a 50/50 chance of giving you diarrhea that feels like Anubis himself hallowed out your butthole. Go around December for the best weather; August is the middle of their summer and horrid.

I would only go back after the new museum is 100% complete and there is a complete government change.

That sucks. I just want to see the Pyramids but if it’s that bad I won’t bother.

From what I've read, it sounds like India, minus the poo, but all the other annoyances multiplied by 10.

with all the scamming that goes on in Egypt I'm beginning to believe the pyramids and their history are also a scam and not worth visiting.

No not really. Only go if you want to channel your inner hyperborean at the pyramids but it's just an annoying dirt patch with hustlers everywhere and hostile locals. If you tell me where to coom in the old market or something I would go again but.. it's a huge shitheap. I would love to coom in some dusty back alley but the only cute girl worker at my hotel was clearly going to be whipped for looking at me.

after all the shit i've seen and heard from friends and acquaintances going there, if i were to ever do it, I'd make sure I get an all inclusive package.

When I say all inclusive, I mean boomer-tier, platinum service, boot-licking tongue-bath ALL INCLUSIVE. I want pickup from the airport by my guide, taken to and from my resort by a private, pre-arranged driver, do the great pyramids tour(s) with the same guide under the explicit instructions that I don't want to be taken to any rug/trinket/gemstone/spice/papyrus shops or go for some shitty camel/horse ride while i'm there. then when I'm leaving, I want to be escorted back to the airport to assist us in checking in.

We pay ONCE and are then handled like toddlers.. no baksheesh, no bureaucracy, no 'that will cost extra', no bullshit. We get the hustlers shoo'd away, doors opened for us and everything handled like we're Hollywood A-listers.

If they can handle that, and not try to frick me over at any point, I'll tip them triple or quadrouple over the original booking costs (which would likely be a fair amount considering what we're asking)

it's the one place on earth I don't want to have to handle 'people' and would happily pay a premium not to.
Shit, i'd prefer to go to the taj mahal and walk around wearing hawaiian shirt with a camera slung around my neck and knee-high socks with a billboard pointing at me saying 'tourist sucker here' than deal with Egypt's bullshit.

      > see the Pyramids and temples
go maybe for two days and leave. Ignore everyone around the temples and pyramids. Watch all the scam videos beforehand to educate yourself about fake police.
      >Worth seeing the Red Sea coast?
Only the blue hole if you are into diving. Rest is nice but imagine being eaten by a shark because morons dumped animal leftovers days before and made them bloodthirsty for more. Or you want just get the experience

      I did this.
Straight from the airport they put you on a cruise that starts at the north of the country and goes south down the Nile. It docks here and there and the same tour guide takes you out to see everything. It's all pre-arranged, no planning on your end, meals are included. The boat was very nice and I got to make friends with people in my tour group.

This, its hot as balls and the food is revolting. But god damn, I was in nerd heaven. Ancient egypt was amazing, they should be ashamed of themselves for being such a shithole when they were once humanities greatest culture and civilization for thousands of years

I'm not that into history and such, but I'd probably find it super fascinating to see ancient Egypt stuff in person. Unfortunately I practically have zero interest in anything else in the country so I'll probably never visit.

    >Go to italy
    >Egyptian museums with mummies and shit, big enough to be bored of them after 1.5 hour but you can actually get out of them
    >no arabs, no harassment

That's my experience with Egypt, i'll never go to the actual country.

Tho, my dad went to Egypt once, not only you get harassed, but he went to a israeliteelry to buy a gift for his wife and they tried to lock him up to sell him shit by force (which is common practice apparently).

Cairo is so ugly and hideous. I've never seen true poverty until I was there. Slums and pollution everywhere.
That being said the Pyramids of Giza are one of the most beautiful things to behold. To know that you're among something so grand and ancient is the epitome of
    >am I dreaming?
I only did Cairo and Saint Catherine. Saint Catherine and the Sinai is amazing if you're religious. I wouldn't bother if you aren't though.

I visited for between 10 and 12 days in December of 2019. It wasn't nearly as bad as most people made it seem. If you've been to another developing country before--especially one with a strong tourism industry--then there shouldn't be anything surprising about Egypt. There are a handful of touts and con artists in parts of Cairo, but most leave you alone if you either ignore them or can manage a half-sentence in Arabic (that's not an exaggeration, either--saying, "la, shukran," gets most of them to go away).

The only two people I recall actually bothering me were:
    >beggar woman who just stood near our table for ~30 minutes, even as my Egyptian friend kept telling her to frick off
    >Uber driver who went the wrong direction for 30 minutes (Uber refunded the trip)
    >camel tout at the pyramids who kept badgering me about taking a ride when I was on my way out (it was also pouring buckets of rain)

Also got really lucky--it started raining like frick and showering hail when I was at the pyramids. Standing up on the dunes and watching these massive clouds roll in was honestly kind of cool.

All in all, was an okay-ish time. Most Egyptians I interacted with were fairly nice, didn't have any significant issues with harassment or people ripping me off. Wouldn't go there with my wife or my mom though, kek.

Took picrel near the Pyramids--didn't do any crazy RealTraveler(TM) stuff there, sorry.

    >digital nomad in SEA but I plan to go there in two months
    >see all the comments about how Egypt is a complete shithole
    >youtubers say it's a shithole
    >reddit says it's a shithole
Even she said it's a shithole and wants to leave but I'm still worried. Is there anything I should be concerned about? I plan to live there for a month (preferably more) see if we are compatible and then marry. She will be my guide. How strict are AirBNBs about letting her into my apartment? Can I extend my tourist visa when wthere?
